🇱🇰 Tea Factory Tour @ Damro Labookellie Tea Lounge
A visit to Sri Lanka is not complete without visiting one the the tea factories. Labookellie Tea Factory is one of the tea factories of Damro Tea in Sri Lanka. It stands at an elevation of 5,000 feet (about 1500 m) 16 km from the tea country hill city, Nuwara Eliya. The estate is recognized as the second oldest tea plantation in the island. The views of the surrounding tea plantations from the factory are spectacular.
We had a factory tour at Labookellie Tea Factory during our stay in Nuwara Eliya. The tour is free and no prior reservation is required. Each group of visitors will be assigned a guide who will explain the process of tea plucking, withering (takes out the moisture), rolling, fermentation, firing and sorting/grading as the group visit different parts of the factory. At the end of the tour, visitors get to taste the tea for free and order cake slices to go with the tea at the Damro Tea Lounge adjacent to the factory. During our visit, there were tea cakes and chocolate cakes available. The cakes were reasonably priced.
