Returning to Longfu Temple, going up to the sky terrace to visit the temple and see the exhibition
Longfu Temple was first built in the third year of Ming Jingtai (1452), and it has a history of nearly six hundred years. It was rebuilt in the ninth year of Qing Yongzheng. During the Ming Dynasty, Longfu Temple was the only temple in the capital where the Tibetan Buddhism and Han Buddhism coexisted, and it became a completely Lama Temple during the Qing Dynasty. Longfu Temple was once one of the incense courts of the court. Because it is located in the East City, it is commonly referred to as the 'East Temple', and the Huguo Temple is called the 'West Temple'. The Longfu Temple fair was the busiest commercial district in the capital during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and there was even a saying that 'there is Confucius Temple in the south and Longfu Temple in the north'. In 1976, Longfu Temple was damaged by an earthquake and was completely demolished later; in 1988, Longfu Building was built, which was one of the earliest modern buildings in Beijing. At that time, Longfu Temple was still one of the most prosperous business centers in Beijing; but after a big fire in 1993, the prosperity of Longfu Temple gradually faded. There were rumors that the fire destroyed the feng shui of Longfu Temple; it is said that there were plans to demolish Longfu Building in 2012 and rebuild Longfu Temple on the original site, but the final plan was to renovate Longfu Building and rebuild Longfu Temple on the roof. However, the exquisite 'Starry Sky Caisson' in the original Zhengjue Hall is still in the Taisui Hall of the First Farmer's Altar, as the treasure of the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum.
In fact, until after the big fire in 1993, Longfu Temple still had commercial facilities such as food courts and night markets. At the beginning of this century, I often accompanied my girlfriend to go shopping and eat snacks. Later, various commercial centers were built in various districts of Beijing, and I had no chance to visit Longfu Temple again. Recently, there has been a lot of news about Longfu Temple. It is said that the second phase of the Longfu Temple project has been basically completed, and the overall trial operation will be launched in June this year. And there are various exhibitions in Longfu Building from time to time, and the photos are very attractive, so I specially returned to Longfu Temple today to take a look and find some memories of my youth twenty years ago.
Taking the subway from the northeast exit of the Art Museum subway station, not far to the north is Longfu Temple Street. I remember that this small street used to be full of vendors and it was very lively. At present, the entire street is still under construction until the Longfu Temple archway on the east side. However, the sign of the 'People's Market' is everywhere, which should be the creative market during the New Year. There are many exhibition boards on the small open space on the south side of Longfu Building, all of which are old photos of Longfu Temple. This is where the food court used to be. I even remember the first time I 'challenged' fried scorpions and locusts here, and I felt like it was a permanent temple fair. Take the elevator on the west side of the building to the ninth floor. There is now a 'Night of Ink and Wash' exhibition. The ticket is 19 yuan. The exhibition is set up in two main halls of the rooftop temple. The content is about the development process of Chinese ink painting in modern times, and some ink works are also exhibited. The rebuilt Longfu Temple buildings, plus the red walls on both sides, give people the illusion of being in the Forbidden City. A viewing platform is also opened in the middle of the red walls on both sides. To the east, you can overlook the CBD high-rise buildings, and to the west, you can see the Jingshan Wanchun Pavilion and the Forbidden City Shenwu Gate not far away. Today's weather is clear, and you can even overlook the scenery of the Western Hills, which is quite magnificent. Seeing the Longfu Temple on the rooftop, I am now looking forward to the second phase of the Longfu Temple project that will be opened in the middle of this year. I will definitely come to see it again at that time. I believe that Longfu Temple will once again become a new landmark of Beijing's business and culture.
