The oldest temple among the temples located on Miyajima is Omotoyama Daisho-in of the Omuro Sect of the Shingon sect (headquarters Ninwaji Temple). After Kukai returned from the Tang Dynasty, he crossed to Miyajima to practice Buddhism in Mishan, and the foundation was established in 806 AD (the first year of Datong). Closely related to the imperial family, it was a place of prayer ordered by Emperor Toba. It was also the place where Emperor Meiji stayed during his visits. Miyajima in Aki, home to Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site that represents Hiroshima. Daishoin is the oldest temple on Miyajima, standing on a hill about a 5-minute walk from the main hall of Itsukushima Shrine. It is enshrined as the head temple of Itsukushima Shrine. Because it is on a slightly elevated area, the long approach to the main hall is quite difficult. The approach and grounds are filled with Buddha and Kannon statues, cute Jizo statues, Enma statues, Karasu Tengu, 500 Arhats, and other unique stone statues such as Anpanman and Kappa, making it a fun temple that feels like a treasure hunt.
