The temple is named for the three large Buddha statues enshrined in its main hall, which led to the saying, 'People pass by the Great Buddha Temple, where the temple's Buddha is larger than the people.' The grandeur of the temple and the size of the Buddha statues are renowned in the Lingnan region. The Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Stone House, is the largest church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Guangzhou, one of the most magnificent twin-spired Gothic buildings in China, and one of only four all-stone Gothic church structures in the world, alongside Notre-Dame de Paris, Westminster Abbey, and Cologne Cathedral.
