Best Things to DoNo.2 of Best Things to Do in Peloponnese
The Corinth Canal cuts through a small stretch of land known as the Isthmus of Corinth, which provides a sea access from the Aegean Sea to Ionia. From a distance, the canal looks like a narrow, slender waterway, but its scale becomes apparent as ships approach and enter the canal. At only 5.5 kilometers long, the Corinth Canal is the deepest canal in the world, and one of the very few that has been carved out of hard rock. Therefore, ships passing through the canal are always at sea level. The idea of connecting the Aegean and Ionian Seas originated in ancient times, but it was not until the reign of the Roman emperor Nero in AD 67 that the canal was excavated. The vast majority of this vast project was undertaken by Jewish prisoners from the Roman Empire in the Jewish colonies. Construction was halted in AD 68 due to unrest in other parts of the empire. It wasn't until the 1890s that technological developments allowed the project to be completed. In 1892, a French company began building the canal. In 1893, the project was completed by the Greek authorities. A road bridge and a railway bridge span the canal.
