The City Pillar Shrine in Udon Thani: A Historical Landmark Open Late
The City Pillar Shrine in Udon Thani is a center of respect and faith for the people of Udon Thani. It was built in 1959 to enshrine the spirit of Major General Prince Prajak Silpakom, the founder of Udon Thani. The city pillar is made from a golden shower tree and is over 5 meters long, buried 3 meters deep. Beneath the base, sacred items such as talismans, rings, silver, and gold are placed for good fortune. In 1999, a new shrine was built to replace the old, deteriorated one. Additionally, the shrine area features a statue of Thao Wessuwan, one of the Four Heavenly Kings who governs the demons.
