The beach is free to enter, and it’s easy to spend the whole day just lounging, swimming, and soaking up the sun. The shallow waters make it perfect for families, and you can walk across the lagoon to a small islet that feels like your own private beach. 🌊 We also explored the Elafonisi Nature Reserve, where the dunes and rare plants create a unique landscape. The area is a protected habitat for loggerhead turtles, so it’s important to be respectful of the environment while you’re there. Just a short drive away, the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the sea—definitely worth a visit! Such inviting waters and stunning surroundings have unfortunately made Elafonsi beach a bit of a must see and it summer it gets busy. The good news though is that you can easily escape the wall-to-wall sun beds by wading across the knee deep shallows of the lagoon to the island itself. Here you will find a sun-lounger free zone and a protected wildlife reserve too. There are several little beaches and coves on Elafonisi island and the further you walk, the quieter it gets.

The city old town is well worth a visit and is crammed full of souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants. There are some beautiful beaches close to the city but why not hire a car and take the time to visit some of the famous beaches on the West Coast of Crete such as Balos Beach, Elafonisi beach, famous for its pink sand and Falassarna beach? Entry to most sites is free, but the Archaeological Museum costs around 6 euros, which is totally worth it to see the Minoan artifacts. One day, I visited Elafonissi Beach—absolutely breathtaking with its pink sand and turquoise waters! 🏝️ I also made a trip to the Samaria Gorge for some hiking. Right from a Laid-back beachgoers to those seeking adrenaline, Elafonissi offers an array of activities and spectacular scenery. The pink sand and mountainous backdrop will keep for stunning pictures. Those who love watersports get to enjoy surfing, kiteboarding, or windsurfing. And once you've worked up an appetite, head to one of the local tavernas for a plate of dakos — a local specialty of crisp bread topped with a mix of fresh tomatoes, mizithra cheese, olive oil, and herbs.

Legend has it that one of the steps is made of gold, visible only to the pure of heart. The monastery itself is beautiful, with whitewashed walls, a small museum, and stunning sea views that make the climb worth it. Inside, the icons and religious artifacts give you a glimpse into the deep spiritual history of the place. After visiting the monastery, I headed to the famous Elafonissi Beach, just a 10-minute drive away, where the pink sand and crystal-clear waters were the perfect way to end the day.
