Chaozhou Travel | You must visit the first ancient temple in eastern Guangdong.
During the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, it was ordered that each state and prefecture in the country should have a Kaiyuan Temple. As a result, many Kaiyuan Temples were built or rebuilt across the country. Over a thousand years have passed, and most of these temples have disappeared, leaving only four, including Chaozhou Kaiyuan Temple.
My personal favorites are five:
First, the porcelain inlays on the roof ridge of the main hall; second, the Four Heavenly Kings on the roof ridge; third, the stone sutra pillars from the Tang Dynasty; fourth, the Ashoka Pagoda from the Song Dynasty; fifth, the plaque in the main hall.
Porcelain inlay is a unique architectural decorative art in the Chaoshan and Minnan regions. Colorful porcelain pieces are used to cover clay sculptures, making them resistant to wind and rain, with strong contrast and bright colors. As soon as I entered the temple, I was attracted by the colorful and lively scene. The solemnity of the Buddhist temple, mixed with the secular nature of the porcelain inlays, is very characteristic of Chaoshan.
There are two stone sutra pillars from the Tang Dynasty in front of the Heavenly King Hall and the Mahavira Hall in the temple, built when Kaiyuan Temple was first constructed, over 1,200 years ago.

Guangdong, Chaozhou, Kaiyuan Temple.
In the 26th year of the Tang Dynasty (738), the imperial court ordered the selection of ten major prefectures and counties to build large temples, named "Kaiyuan", with four entrances, namely the Vajra Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Great Treasure Hall, and the Sutra Building. The central axis is the screen wall, mountain gate, Heavenly King Hall, Great Treasure Hall, Sutra Building, and Jade Buddha Building; the east side is the guest hall, Dizang Pavilion, dining hall, monk's house, not vulgar residence, ancestral hall; the west side is the abbot's room, Guanyin Pavilion, Huiye Hall, monk's house, and Zhutian Pavilion, forming a huge courtyard-style building complex. The total area is 11,031 square meters. The temple is spacious, the statues are solemn, and there are many cultural relics. It is the "first ancient temple in eastern Guangdong" and the location of the Lingdong Buddhist College. It is also one of the four existing Kaiyuan ancient temples in China.

Kaiyuan Temple, Chaozhou
Kaiyuan Temple is located on Kaiyuan Road in Chaozhou, Guangdong. It was originally known as Lifeng Temple and was built during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty. It was one of the large temples built by Emperor Xuanzong Li Longji in each state and county of the country, and was named after the era. It was known as Kaiyuan Wanshou Zen Temple in the Yuan Dynasty and Kaiyuan Zhenguo Zen Temple from the Ming Dynasty. The Zen temple buildings are arranged along the central axis, including the screen wall, mountain gate, Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Depository, and Jade Buddha Tower. The east and west sides feature guest halls, Ksitigarbha Pavilion, dining hall, monk's quarters, abbot's room, and Guanyin Pavilion, forming a large siheyuan-style architectural complex. The temple also houses precious cultural relics such as the Tang Dynasty stone-carved Great Sutra Pagoda and the Song Dynasty large bronze bell. The Zen temple is known for its spectacular halls and pavilions, solemn statues, and thriving incense burning, and is known as the "number one ancient temple in eastern Guangdong".

Chaozhou Ancient City 3H Extreme Punch Card 3 | The First Ancient Temple in Eastern Guangdong, Kaiyuan Temple
A 3-hour extreme punch card tour of Chaozhou Ancient City starts with a visit to Guangji Tower to see the Han River, then walking into the heart of the ancient city, passing through Paifang Street, where Western-style arcades and traditional archways blend perfectly, and you will see Kaiyuan Temple.
Chaozhou has historically been the political center of Eastern Guangdong, serving as the seat of the state, road, and prefectural governments. In the 26th year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (738 AD), an imperial edict was issued to select ten major states and counties across the country to build large temples named after 'Kaiyuan'. Lifeng Temple, located in Ganlu Square of Chaozhou Ancient City, was one of them, later renamed Kaiyuan Temple, and is also one of the four existing ancient Kaiyuan temples in China.
The Kaiyuan Temple complex consists of four sections, with a central axis, east side, and west side, forming a massive quadrangle compound. It is known as the 'First Ancient Temple in Eastern Guangdong' and is also the site of the Lingdong Buddhist College, enjoying the reputation of 'a blessed land for a million families, a jungle for three thousand worlds'.
Entering Kaiyuan Temple, one can feel the strong Tang Dynasty atmosphere, with ancient cultural relics that have a long history visible everywhere, and the porcelain carvings on the rooftops are also very distinctive. The people of Chaoshan have a strong pioneering spirit, but at the same time, they place great importance on tradition, which perhaps is the core that drives them outward.

Chaozhou Ancient City | Two-day and One-night Nanny-level Eating and Touring Guide
Take advantage of the holiday for a two-day and one-night trip around Chaozhou🥳🥳Quickly note down this detailed eating and touring guide, or you'll miss out🙂↔️
🚆Transportation
🧩Chaozhou does not have a high-speed train station, you can take the high-speed train🚄 to Chaoshan Station, then transfer to the K2 express line for ¥9 or the Chaozhou Ancient City Tourist Special Line for ¥15 to reach Chaozhou city area
🛵It's easy to get stuck in traffic and hard to find parking when driving a private car in Chaozhou city area, riding a shared electric bike is more convenient
🏠Accommodation Recommendation:
Hotels inside Chaozhou Ancient City tend to raise prices during holidays, so we chose a hotel near the ancient city area, "Season•Apartment"
This hotel is very close to the ancient city area, about 8 minutes by shared electric bike🛵 and only 5 minutes by taxi🚖
🍜Food Recommendations:
① Mengchen·Phoenix Single Bush Tea·Chaozhou Kungfu Tea
🥮There is a tea house on the second floor, where you can order some tea leaves, a few tea snacks, and sit down leisurely and comfortably to taste tea🍵. If you don't want to sit down and enjoy slowly, you can also buy their tea leaves directly. They have their own tea garden, and the tea is very affordable
② 🥩Abin Beef Hot Pot
🏠This restaurant is located on Paifang Street, very close to Guangji Bridge and Guangji Tower, and is easy to find👏🏻
🍡Hand-squeezed pure beef balls
The beef balls and beef tendon balls are squeezed on the spot by the lady with a thermal box and directly put into the pot, chewy and firm, with a real taste👍🏻
🐂Brisket fat is explosively delicious🥳It looks white and fatty, but once boiled in the pot, there is no greasy taste at all, it's very fragrant and chewy
③ Traditional Dessert•Chaozhou Handmade Sweet Soup
🌟Duck Mother Twist No.1
Hearing the name Duck Mother Twist, one might think it's something like a duck egg, but it turns out to be an oval-shaped sweet dumpling with a thin skin and a solid filling, very tasty when bitten into
🌟Seaweed Flower Lao No.2
Sweet and sticky purple rice, with refreshing seaweed flower, a bite in the summer is super cooling
④ 🐟Linghai Sashimi Stall
🏮The interior decoration has a lot of Chaoshan characteristics, with many Chaoshan lanterns hanging
🦢Marinated lion head goose meat can be chosen with different fat levels, fully considering customer needs
🦪Fresh marinated oysters are very sweet and plump
⑤ 🚏Xima Road
A hidden gem in a small alley on Xima Road, I forgot what it's called😭😭Super cheap, generous with ingredients, the fried kway teow, as Guangzhou people would say, has a great 'wok hei', super delicious😋
⛩️Must-visit Attractions
Paifang Street | Guangji Bridge | Guangji Gate Tower | Chaozhou West Lake | Kaiyuan Temple | Thai Buddha Hall | Han Wen Gong Temple and other attractions are all great for checking in😉

Chaozhou Three-Day Extreme Tour (with tips to avoid pitfalls)
Super Girl's Weekend Extreme Tour to Chaozhou
Day one starts in the morning from Guangzhou South, arriving at Chaoshan Station at noon, then taking the high-speed rail tourism line (it's super hard to get a taxi at Chaoshan Station, we tried for a long time and finally chose the tourism line, 15 yuan per person which is acceptable) to Paifang Street.
📍Day One: Paifang Street — Guangji Bridge (you need to queue for a while, but it's not the peak season so the wait isn't long) — Hanwen Gong Temple — Wait by the river at 5:30 pm for the Guangji Bridge to be dismantled — Xima Road for dinner — Watch the light show on the banks of Guangji Bridge (there are shows at 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm)
📍Day Two: Kaiyuan Temple — Yi Garden — Qinglong Ancient Temple — Beef hotpot for lunch — Danfu Institute (it rained heavily so there were even fewer people, felt very serene and comfortable) — Xima Road to buy snacks back to the hotel
📍Day Three: Ji Lue Huang Gong Temple — West Lake Park — Looking for food (Eighteen Bend Fish Dumplings, Fan Sha Taro, Braised Goose, etc...) — Head home
🤤🤤Chaozhou must-eats: wheat cakes, Fan Sha Taro sweet potatoes, braised goose, almond tea, meat dumplings, beef hotpot, beef balls, sea stone flowers, seafood casserole porridge, licorice fruit, sugar onion thin pancakes!!
Note: ①Bring your student ID, most attractions offer half-price admission ②Places like Danfu Institute and Chaozhou Geological Park are on the mountains, it's hard to get a taxi when leaving, so try not to stay too late ③Cars and electric vehicles are not allowed inside the ancient city ④Make sure to leave the ancient city half an hour early to catch a taxi to Chaoshan Station for the return trip
Summary: When visiting Chaozhou, find a hotel in the ancient city, because all those attractions are inside the ancient city. Chaozhou really has a lot of delicious food!! You can eat different things every day, and compared to Paifang Street, Xima Road seems to have a slightly better cost-performance ratio for food, Paifang Street is a bit more expensive (to the extent that locals wouldn't go there), but I can still accept these.
❗️❗️But!! When I was about to leave Chaozhou and have my last meal, I wanted to eat beef slice Guo Tiao, so I planned to find a place on Paifang Street (because it was nearby). I found an older looking shop, went in and asked if they had beef Guo Tiao (at this time we just asked if they had it) the owner said yes, but when I looked at the menu it was beef ball Guo Tiao, I originally didn't want it, but he said he had already started cooking it, we hadn't even said whether we wanted it or not and he had already started cooking it, it was only two minutes from the time we came in to when we thought about leaving... Thinking about making do, beef balls then beef balls (Chaozhou's beef balls are really super delicious) but the beef balls in his bowl of Guo Tiao, were completely different from what I had at other shops, they tasted like the frozen hotpot ingredients beef balls from the supermarket downstairs of my house, my goodness, before this I always thought that there were no bad tasting beef balls in Chaoshan, this... And his Guo Tiao really disappeared after two chopsticks, I couldn't get full at all (and he charged me 25 yuan a bowl...)
Throughout the trip, the experience was very good, but the last meal left a bad impression, I'm really speechless
Really, don't think that older looking shops will be more authentic and affordable, especially on Paifang Street!!!!

Walking through the temple's ornate gates, we were enveloped in a serene atmosphere, filled with the scent of incense and the soft hum of chanting monks. Each intricate detail of the temple's design spoke volumes about its rich history and cultural significance, leaving us in awe of the craftsmanship and devotion that went into its creation. As we explored the vast temple complex, we couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over us, connecting us on a deeper level as a family amidst the timeless beauty of Kaiyuan Temple.

Spent half a day playing around the ancient city of Chaozhou√
Who knows! Because 'Du Sui Rui' is really powerful, we canceled tonight's Chaozhou homestay and the subsequent itinerary 55555 But unexpectedly, we almost finished playing in Chaozhou in half a day
We went straight to the ancient city of Chaozhou at noon, and parked the car at the foot of the city wall (maybe because we went early, we could still find a spot! In the evening when we drove, we found out that it was free! No wonder the snack bar owner said parking outside was free, I scanned my phone many times and it kept showing no record! Hahaha, the joy of freeloading
1 Because it was quite hot at noon, the snack bar owner said Kaiyuan Temple was cool, so we went there first. It is said that Kaiyuan Temple is very efficacious
2 Then we strolled around Paifang Street (actually, all the scenic spots in the ancient city are connected, with roads leading in all directions, you can just wander around) Lots of snacks! Oh right, we bought a lot of bottles of oil mandarin juice, really cheap, most of them 5 yuan per bottle, super healthy! Sweet aftertaste! Cooling and refreshing! Because it was too hot, we went to a dessert shop and had some, ordered turtle jelly and duck mother twist, it was just so-so, not the tasty kind of dessert, not recommended~
Then after 4 pm, we went to Guangji Building and Guangji Bridge, there were too many people on the bridge and it was very sunny, so we didn't go up, just looked at Guangji Bridge by the river~ (it's cooler with the shade of trees~) There are many sellers of autumn pear cream and luohan fruit drinks, reasonably priced, refreshing and tasty~4 Near Guangji Building, there are many tricycles offering tours of the eight scenic spots of Chaozhou ancient city, priced at 100/car (a car should fit up to three people at most! One person has to sit facing backwards) I, adhering to the principle of saving where I can, tried to bargain and successfully got it down to 70 yuan, then the three of us happily
Took a tricycle ride around the ancient city! Our driver was a local from Chaozhou
He was very honest and gave a detailed introduction, highly recommended! Because we went late, most of the scenic spots were closed, we could only take a quick look at the entrance Special reminder: the tricycle has a fixed route, it will take you to a place selling Chaozhou's three treasures, but it's okay if many don't buy anything, we just happened to want to buy so we bought a little) As for the duration of the whole tricycle ride, I feel it's about an hour? But this depends on how long you spend at the scenic spots and the speed of the tricycle. Overall, the tricycle experience was great!
5 After the tricycle ride, the end point was near Kaiyuan Temple, we walked to Xima Road to eat snacks~ Had fermented tofu chicken wings, salty rice cake, almond tea, rice cake, peach cake, phoenix tofu, oyster pancake, seaweed beef ball soup, sticky rice pork intestine, etc., didn't specifically look for shops, just bought from the ones with more people, emmm it was just okay, nothing amazing, maybe I'm just not very sensitive to this kind of food~ But it's still worth a try
6 Finally, we went to see the night view of Guangji Building, it was great! There were many stalls selling lanterns and hairpins, lanterns were basically 5-15 yuan, not sure about the hairpins, pretty cute~ (Oh right! When we were on the city wall, it suddenly started pouring rain, many people didn't bring umbrellas, the shops below immediately broadcasted: Selling raincoats and umbrellas! But it was just a shower, stopped after about ten minutes~)
7 Because we had to rush back to Xiamen, we didn't see the light show of Guangji Bridge~ But
we saw the night view of Guangji Bridge! Chaozhou·Guangdong

Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou
The Kaiyuan Temple in the ancient city of Chaozhou was built in the 26th year of Kaiyuan of the Tang Dynasty (738). During the Yuan Dynasty, it was called 'Kaiyuan Wanshou Zen Temple', in the Ming Dynasty it became 'Kaiyuan Zhenguo Zen Temple', and since the Qing Dynasty, 'Kaiyuan Zhenguo Zen Temple' and 'Kaiyuan Temple' have been used interchangeably. According to contemporary experts in ancient architecture: the architectural model of the famous Todai-ji Temple's Buddha Hall in Japan from the Song Dynasty is exactly the same as the current Kaiyuan Temple's Heavenly King Hall, confirming that the Heavenly King Hall is a Song Dynasty structure with high research value. It is often visited by architecture schools from both within China and abroad for observation and study, and is acclaimed as a 'pearl of ancient architectural art'. In 2001, Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, as an ancient building from the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

In Chaozizhou
Phoenix Mountain, where people's hearts are fiery, by the Han River, where the shores are adorned with irises and orchids.
It is said that in Chaozizhou, the tides ebb and flow, and the collision between the river, the sea, and people's hearts has been through countless changes. Here, filial piety and loyalty are the essence of heritage, perseverance and struggle are the philosophy of survival, tea is the way to enlightenment, food is the means to fame, tradition is the belief, and simplicity is the way of life.
Kaiyuan Temple, Guangji Bridge, Thai Buddha Hall, the city's riverfront is uniform in appearance, with gold lacquer wood carvings and Chaozhou embroidery ceramics, all of which highlight the profound cultural heritage of this ancient city. Beef hotpot, Du Longsheng's pickles, rice noodle rolls, kung fu tea, and aged tangerine peel, all amaze with the local flavor of life. This land, nurtured by the waves, has its own unique charm and romance, simple yet bold. You should know, here, there are not so many flavors of sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy—
Only the incomparable freshness.

Listen to the advice! Go to Chaoshan for a trip in 2024 | Go see 'Huanghe Road' and the ancient archways
I made an impromptu trip to Chaoshan,
Decided and booked the ticket for the next day.
The trip was very sudden,
·
Sharing some experience for the first time to Chaoshan:
1. Geographically, Chaoshan refers to: Chaozhou, Shantou, and Jieyang three cities.
The Jieyang airport shared by the three cities is in the middle of the three cities, and it's not far to take a taxi to any of them.
·
2. The main attractions for sightseeing and photography in Chaozhou are concentrated in the ancient city,
1️⃣The ancient archways are stacked one after another, which is a very distinctive place.
2️⃣Kaiyuan Temple is very beautiful at dusk.
3️⃣Guangji Gate and Guangji Bridge are also worth a visit.
3. The main attractions for sightseeing and photography in Shantou are concentrated in the old city
Developed around the small park.
1️⃣Shantou Small Park
2️⃣Mazu Temple
3️⃣The old streets around Zhenbang Road, etc.
These two cities are very suitable for citywalk. You can stroll and take pictures leisurely. If you are short of time, you can also play in one city in one day.

Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou is a temple where people pray for their family's safety
If you are fortunate enough to come to Chaozhou, you must visit this temple to worship Buddha.
Entry to the temple is free, and they also provide three incense sticks per person (donation for the incense is voluntary). The temple is quite large, with beautiful scenery, and it gets crowded during holidays. Many people come here out of admiration, as this temple is somewhat famous locally.
Would you believe it, the recently popular Temple Coffee ☕ is also available at Kaiyuan Temple.

The wind of wealth, blows in your face
No insomnia at night, no lack of money in the card
Just for these slogans, many would want to have a drink. After all, I also want the wind of wealth to blow in my face
The Culinary Explorer
In the world of light and shadow, see Quanzhou.
As a city with many old buildings, Quanzhou has a strong sense of atmosphere. It is not only famous for its cuisine, but I think the best thing about Quanzhou is its slow-paced lifestyle.
The residents here seem to have forgotten about time and are living a traditional slow life. But when night falls, the streets are crowded with people and everywhere is filled with the fireworks of life.

Pretending to be in Thailand - Kaiyuan Temple Thai Buddha Hall
passing through the beautiful scenery of Chaozhou Hanjiang Bridge is attracted by this Thai-style building, this is the Kaiyuan Temple Thai Buddha Temple. The
Thai Buddha Hall is magnificent, harmonious and elegant, fully demonstrating the architectural style of Thai architecture. Lotus pond, linden, and beautifully carved statues of the gods. There are also four-faced Buddhas representing love, career, health and wealth, with Thai characteristics.
Dessie.
More than 1,000 years ago, under the command of Tang Xuanzong, who advocated Buddhism, there were ten grand treasures in the country's top ten counties, called Kaiyuan Temple. After the historical storms, there are only four of the top ten famous temples in the past, one of which is in Chaozhou, Guangdong.
Because the dynasties have maintained the Chaozhou Kaiyuan Temple, the temple has the architectural style of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties in the Tang Dynasty.
Chaozhou Kaiyuan Temple originally covers an area of about 100 mu. Although the existing area is greatly reduced, it is still one of the largest Buddhist temples in eastern Guangdong, and has a high reputation in Fujian and Guangdong and Southeast Asia.
In the Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, if you look at it, you will find that there are many delicate decorations on the roof of each hall. These decorations are called inlaid porcelain. The contents of the inlaid porcelain are flowers, phoenixes, peacocks, lions and real dragons. There are also some Chinese mythological legends.
Chaozhou inlaid porcelain is bold, rich in content and colorful, and is a building craft with the same name as Chaozhou woodcarving and Huizhou woodcarving.
Chaozhou inlaid porcelain is also known as Chaozhou wood carving and Chaozhou stone carving. The biggest advantage of
inlay is that it is not easy to change color after weathering, and it is easier to retain than the same exquisite wood carving process.
Chaozhou inlaid porcelain is mainly embossed, showing a layered effect. Because of its unique style and no such technology, temples in the Guangfu area and Southeast Asia often come to Chaozhou to hire professional masters to decorate.
