#discoverchina Just back from 3 days and nights in Nanning. It’s a very spread out city with 5 subway lines, an interesting assortment of regular city buses and routes, and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Chaoyang Square itself is the centre of the city and a hive of activity from early until late - people dancing, singing various kinds of Chinese opera (on high volume), playing cards and Chinese chess, and generally wheeling and dealing (I didn’t want to ask any questions). A great place for people watching. Most of the people in Nanning in my experience can not speak very good english. So it would be handy to bring a translation book. There is also a local dialect but most can speak mandarin. Shopping is very good especially for women clothes. There is a tunnel underground shop along Chao Yang Road - the main shopping area - clothes and food is cheap in Nanning. There is also a very tasty sidewalk dish that i tried - black tofu - the smell though is not very good but it tastes good especially with its chili sauce. Life is also slow paced in Nanning compared to its bustling neighbor. 30 minutes away from the main city gates - its already all province. Literally speaking surrounded by banana plantations and scenic mountains.

Remember to bring an umbrella and a light jacket. Book tickets in advance on the official WeChat accounts of major attractions or travel platforms to ensure a smoother trip. II. Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Nanning - Zhongshan Road Night Market Upon arriving in Nanning, I first visited the bustling Zhongshan Road Night Market. The place was brightly lit and crowded, with a dazzling array of local snacks. I savored delicacies like Suan Ye (sour and spicy snacks), Laoyou Noodles, and grilled oysters. Every bite was infused with the flavor of Nanning, making it a truly unforgettable experience. Day 2: Qingxiu Mountain - Nanhu Park In the morning, I went to Qingxiu Mountain. The rolling hills, lush greenery, and blooming flowers made it feel like stepping into a vast botanical kingdom. In the afternoon, I visited Nanhu Park, strolling along the lake, admiring the picturesque scenery, and experiencing the leisure and tranquility of Nanning. III. Nearby Attractions 1. Qingxiu Mountain: As a landmark of Nanning, Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area boasts dense forests and beautiful scenery. It features famous attractions such as the Longxiang Pagoda and Guanyin Zen Temple, making it a truly memorable place to visit. 2. Nanhu Park: With its clear lake and shady trees, it's a great place for locals to relax. The dazzling waterfall light show on Nanhu Bridge at night is a feast for the eyes. 3. Zhongshan Road Night Market: This place is filled with the vibrant atmosphere of Nanning and offers a wide variety of food. Accommodation Tips I recommend staying near Chaoyang Square, which offers convenient transportation and is surrounded by shopping malls and restaurants. In addition, the well-developed subway lines make it easy to reach various attractions. V. Food Guide 1. Laoyou Noodles: The sour and spicy Laoyou Noodles are one of Nanning's specialties. The chewy rice noodles, paired with the sour and spicy seasoning, are both comforting and satisfying. 2. Suan Ye: This is one of Nanning's favorite snacks. Made from various pickled fruits, the perfect blend of sour, sweet, spicy, and salty flavors creates a refreshing and unforgettable taste. For dinner, we had dumplings from a long-established restaurant in Erqi Square. I don't recommend it for people who don't like ginger 😅 From Zhengzhou to Nanning, I took the night high-speed rail for the first time. I actually wanted to get on from Beijing, but it was full, so I started from Zhengzhou. In other words, I slept in the same bed as someone else 😂 I didn't care and slept soundly 😴 The layout was almost the same as in Luanwo. You get snacks. I could only get a bed up to the station, so I moved to a seat car on the way. My seat was on the aisle, but the person by the window had the curtains completely closed so I couldn't see the view, so I moved to the dining car. I didn't order anything, but they didn't say anything until the last stop, so it was OK. In Nanning, I had lunch with a friend from my lab and enjoyed sweet and delicious Cantonese cuisine. The durian dessert was also delicious. After the meal, we strolled around Chaoyang Square and said our goodbyes. When we entered Nanning Station to head to Kunming, an attendant stopped us from bringing in the battery😭It was over capacity. The shipping fee was high, so we disposed of it on the spot🥲The baggage inspection at Nanning Station is strict, so please be careful. Next time, we will finally enter Southeast Asia~
