Attractions in Centipede Temple
The Centipede Temple, also known as Then Tze Khoon, is a fascinating attraction located along Jalan Temiang in the northern part of Seremban, Malaysia.
Inside the temple, you’ll find a three-story pagoda with a laughing Buddha statue on the top floor. Although Then Sze is primarily a Taoist temple, it also contains Buddhist images, which is common in many Chinese temples in Malaysia. The main Then Sze Holy temple is built into the rock face and houses a drum, a Qing Dynasty bell, an ornate door, antique lanterns, and ceiling hangings. Outside, there are shrines called the Purple Cane Gazebo and the Datuk Altar.
Besides the centipede, another attraction is the God of Marriage statue, referred to as Yue Lao. Couples seeking a happy marriage hook lockets with red strings attached to a fence alongside the statue, hoping for a long and joyful union.
There are also statues of the Eight Immortals are seated on rocks amid the trees; Lucky Tortoise Pool and Koi Pond: Overlooked by a statue of Guan Yin; Pavilion Dedicated to Guan Di: A golden toad statue with a coin in its mouth is believed to protect wealth and guard against bad luck. Refreshment Shop and Religious Trinket Stall are also available.
Location:

Legend of the Centipede Temple
According to legend, a young man who achieved fame and fortune failed to show gratitude and filial piety to his mother upon returning home. As punishment, he was turned into a ‘rock ship’ located at Bukit Jung. A centipede, believed to be the reincarnation of the young man’s mother, is often seen beside the rock. Visitors now hope to find a centipede here for good luck and prosperity.
To mark the spot where the young man was turned into a rock, a giant stone centipede has been erected at the temple. This centipede serves as a reminder of the consequences of ingratitude and the importance of filial piety. The legend teaches us about the significance of showing respect and gratitude to our parents and elders. It also emphasizes the idea that our actions have consequences, even beyond our own lifetimes.
When you visit the Centipede Temple, take a moment to reflect on this legend and appreciate the spiritual depth it adds to the temple’s atmosphere.
