Cattle Depot Art Village | English-style red brick house | Multiple check-in spots
To Kwa Wan is located in the southeast of Kowloon City. Since the opening of the Tuen Ma Line, the MTR has a To Kwa Wan Station, which makes it easier to get there!
The great place in Hong Kong that I want to share with you this time is the Cattle Depot Artist Village in To Kwa Wan!
The Cattle Depot Art Village is currently a venue rented out for use as art studios. It was formerly the Ma Tau Kok Animal Inspection Station, which was the central slaughterhouse for cattle. It was built in 1908 and was used as a cattle inspection station and slaughterhouse for 91 years until the slaughterhouse was relocated to Sheung Shui in August 1999 and ceased operations. It was subsequently renovated and split into several units that were rented out to local artists as studios, and gradually evolved into the Cattle Depot Art Village.
The Cattle Depot Artist Village covers an area of 1.7 hectares and is a single-storey red brick bungalow with a tiled pointed roof. The Cattle Depot architecture combines the features of Chinese and Western architecture. The red brick bungalow has the layout of a Western market in the early 20th century, the red brick walls have a Western Victorian style, and the roof adopts the traditional Chinese hip roof and Chinese double-barrel tile roof. It is the only remaining characteristic historical building complex in Hong Kong and has been listed as a Grade II historic building in Hong Kong by the Antiquities and Monuments Office.
Walking into the Cowshed Art Village, the entrance is a large open space of about 40 square meters, surrounded by low red brick walls on both sides. The original walls were used to tie up cattle in the old days.
Check-in location 1: The atrium at the entrance
There are 5 red brick bungalows surrounding the atrium, each 50 meters long. Taking photos with this as the background is beautiful from any angle!
In front of the red brick low wall there is a long cement trough, which was the feeding trough for cows in the past. The iron chain and iron ring are still preserved at the bottom of the trough!
As an art village, it is also full of artistic atmosphere. There are some spaces with different text art stacked near the entrance atrium!
The biggest feature of the Niupeng Art Village is that it is built with red bricks. There are many red brick houses here, each with its own characteristics, and the windows and doorways are all great for taking pictures!
Check-in location 2: A red brick bungalow in the atrium
The red brick house is a check-in location suitable for both men and women. Many people like to come here to take couple photos!
Check-in location 3: The red brick house after entering the interior
The red brick house inside is larger, unlike the low bungalow at the entrance. With the doors and windows, it looks a bit like a small church in a British community!
There are benches in some places, so sitting down and taking pictures is a different experience!
If you pay close attention, you will find that there are several types of doors and windows in the red brick houses here. It feels different to take pictures standing at different doorways!
In addition to the unique buildings, there are also unique flower pots here!
Some are themed after nearby attractions, such as Tin Hau Temple, Hau Wang Temple and Song Wang Hall, etc. Others are themed after buildings or plants. They are colorful and each flower pot is full of art and meaning!
Here, you can always find some corners worth checking in!
The former Ma Tau Kok Quarantine Station was not only a slaughterhouse, but also a place for temporary accommodation and sale of livestock. Mainland livestock would be delivered by trucks, while foreign cattle would be transported by water and then led to the cattle shed after landing.
