I took a train from Budapest for more than two hours to Eger, a small town in northeastern Hungary. If I got up early, there would be no pressure on the day. In Eger, there will be local people looking at you on the way, asking the locals to tell you warmly, to show you. The city is not big, and you can walk around half a day on foot. It takes less than half an hour to walk from the train station to the castle. If you are interested in wine, you can go to the wine cellar in the suburbs.
I like this kind of Hungary with almost no tourists.
