El Greco was a Greek painter as well as sculptor who spent a good part of his life in Toledo and had the last moments of his life there.
He has been seen as an artist with a highly individual dramatic and expressionistic style which belongs to no conventional school. So it’s no surprise that his work was met with the puzzlement if not rejection of his contemporaries, but they certainly gained newfound appreciation in the 20th century and since regarded as one of the Spanish master.
El Greco painted several apostolates. Apostolate is a set of thirteen paintings, whose position was not predetermined, the exception being the picture of Christ the Saviour, which occupied the centre of the composition.
Of all, three complete works have survived, and one of them was in this museum. It is also the one of greatest value and demonstrates like no other the artist's ability to paint individuals that are incredibly human and of exemplary character, full of dignity and nobility.
