Historic buildings
Canterbury Castle, located in Canterbury, Kent, England, is a Norman castle site with a profound historical background. It is conveniently located just five minutes' walk from Canterbury East Station and the main bus station. One of three royal castles in Kent, Canterbury Castle was built shortly after the Battle of Hastings to guard the important Roman road from Dover to London. The original castle consisted of a wooden mound and outer wall, and later during the reign of Henry I, a majestic stone main building was built. Notable for its sturdy flint and sandstone structure, the keep once served as the county jail in the 13th century and was captured by the French during the First Barons' War. In 1380, a new gate was added to the castle. Although Canterbury Castle has been owned by the local government since 1928, it has been closed since 2018 due to safety concerns due to falling masonry. Although there were plans to restore and reopen the castle, as of October 2024 it remains closed. Visitors can stroll around the castle grounds to soak up its historic atmosphere and explore other historic attractions nearby.
