In 1977, in response to a call to protect wildlife endangered in Kenya due to drought and war, 108 African species were sent to the 3,700-hectare Kalaui Island. These animals breed successfully on Karaui Island. Today, gibbons and zebras co-breed with Palawan native animals such as Calamian deer, Calamian mouse deer, pandas, ocelots, tarsier monkeys, Palawan peacock pheasants, pangolins, porcupines and lizards on Karaui Island.
