Phuping Palace is located on Doi Buak Ha, Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province, 1,373.197 meters above sea level, covering an area of approximately 284 rai. The word “Doi Buak Ha” is a local name. “Doi” means mountain, “Buak” means marsh, and “Ha” means guava tree. All together, it means that the top of this mountain has a marsh full of guava trees covering the entire marsh area.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously ordered its construction in 1961 and named this palace Phuping Palace, choosing one of two names that Somdej Phra Nyanasamvara, Somdej Phra Sangharaja, Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, when Phra Sasanasophon was the one who came up with the name, which is “Pingkhamphon” and “Phuping Palace”. This palace Used as a residence on the occasion of His Majesty's visit to Chiang Mai Province to work and visit the people in the northern region, including to welcome royal guests who come to build friendly relations with Thailand on various occasions. The reason for choosing to build in Chiang Mai Province is because of the cool weather, beautiful landscape, and because it used to be the capital city. The people still maintain good customs and traditions. Phuping Palace is a central Thai house plan called "Ruen Mu". It has a traditional Thai architectural style, made of brick and mortar, raised floors, and a Thai-style roof. Inside, there is a throne room, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom. There is also a royal residence for royal guests, with a large veranda and a bird pavilion as a place to sit and view the scenery of Chiang Mai. The upper floor is the residence, while the lower floor is the residence of the royal pages and ladies-in-waiting. The plan was designed by Mom Chao Samai Chalerm Kridakorn, a special architect of the Fine Arts Department. The perspective design was by Mom Rajawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri, and His Majesty graciously ordered the Office of the Crown Property Bureau to The King carried out the construction with Mom Chao Samai Chalerm Kridakorn as the construction director, Mom Rajawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri and Mr. Pradit Yuwapukka from the Architecture Division, Fine Arts Department as assistants. His Majesty graciously appointed General Luang Kampanat Saenyakon, Privy Councilor, as his representative to lay the foundation stone for the palace on Thursday, August 24, 1961 at 10:49 a.m. The construction of the palace took 5 months to complete. His Majesty then graciously appointed Mom Rajawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri as both the architect and interior designer to design and decorate the interior of the palace, both the residence and the area used to receive all royal guests. The design was in a modified Thai style, adapted to be more suitable for international use.
