I also didn't check the opening hours of attractions beforehand, so I traveled all that way only to find they were closed—it was heartbreaking. Plus, I randomly picked a restaurant near a tourist site to eat, and the food was both expensive and terrible—I was completely miserable. But! Beijing is amazing, with deep historical heritage and a strong modern vibe. There are so many delicious foods and fun activities that you can never explore enough! Here's how to enjoy Beijing in May without any regrets~ Day 1: Arrive in Beijing → Sanlitun → Taste Beijing snacks Arrive in Beijing in the morning. I recommend choosing Beijing Capital International Airport as it's close to the city center with convenient transportation. Take the airport express train and transfer to the subway to your hotel. Staying near Xidan is ideal—transportation is convenient with everything you need in one place 🐉. After dropping off your luggage, visit Sanlitun for some shopping. It's fashionable and lively, filled with trendy shops and beautiful people, plus plenty of Instagram-worthy photo spots 📸. When you get tired, try some Beijing snacks like "baodu" (tripe) and "luzhu" (braised offal). They're delicious and will instantly make you fall in love with the city's vibrant atmosphere. Day 2: Tiananmen Square → Forbidden City → Jingshan Park Get up early, leaving around 4 AM to watch the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square. In May, the sun rises early, so arrive early to get a good spot. Remember not to bring lighters, selfie sticks, etc., as security is strict. After the ceremony, you can visit the Memorial Hall to pay respects to Chairman Mao (dress appropriately and remain quiet). Next, visit the Forbidden City. Arrive before 9 AM to see the three main halls along the central axis before the tour groups arrive. Get an audio guide to better understand the history and stories of the palace. Its contains 10 Olympic venues, 7 non-competitive venues and a forest park , some of which have become landmarks of Beijing and representative works in architectural history such as the Bird Nest and Water Cube. Visitors was also refreshing to see a more contemporary type of urban architecture, admired the stadium's night lights, and ate ice cream in the winter evening.

I went a few times over the few years I was in Beijing, each time was so different. The first time was early during covid and obviously a lot was closed and it was still rather cold so not much too look at. After that each time got more interesting and beautiful. Took a few tries but I finally got to go during the night and enjoy the buildings lit up. Really happy I got to do that it was really nice. Going up in the tower also took a few tries, it’s a lot further than it looks from now one end of the park. The design of the area itself was impressive! • Tiananmen Square & The Forbidden City Unfortunately, we didn’t register in time via WeChat for the Forbidden City, so we admired it from the outside. A reminder to always book early! • POP MART Heaven 💖 One of my personal highlights! Beijing has the BEST Pop Mart stores, and I totally lost control — ended up getting 20 figures 🫣. Each store had unique interior design and themes, so visiting them was a mini adventure in itself. If you’re a Pop Mart fan, this city is pure treasure. 📶 Connectivity We used an eSIM from Trip.com — super reliable. We accessed Instagram, Facebook, YouTube smoothly without a VPN. The Xiangyun Torch Tower, originally situated atop the Bird's Nest, has now been relocated to the Torch Square in the northeast of the stadium, where it remains visible from outside the venue.
