Continuing the Historical Context--Shaoxing Bazi Bridge Historical District
📍Attraction Address: Bazi Bridge Historical and Cultural District, located in the northeast of the ancient city of Shaoxing.
🚗Transportation to Attraction: Just take a taxi
👍️Must-Visit Attractions: As a typical representative of the layout of the central river streets in Shaoxing ancient city, the district contains the north-south Keshan River and the east-west Dusi River. The two rivers flow through the district and intersect in a 'T' shape, serving as the main waterway for the eastern part of Shaoxing ancient city. The roads within the district are either built along the river, paved with stone slabs, or are deep and quaint alleys, highlighting the unique street and alley style of the ancient city.
The district is famous for the Bazi Bridge. The Bazi Bridge is the oldest existing urban bridge in China, built before the Jiatai year of the Song Dynasty. On both sides of the Bazi Bridge are stone-paved riverside roads, with stone steps leading to the water every ten meters or so. The quaint Bazi Bridge and the simple and elegant residential buildings along the river complement each other, exemplifying the typical 'one river with two streets' water town style. This naturally conforming and ingeniously unique construction is rich in the characteristics and charm of the water town.
The district features both streets and rivers, with streets following the rivers, bridges connecting the streets, and lanes crisscrossing. The long bridge and straight street are built by the water, full of ancient charm. Standing on the long bridge and looking out, the residential buildings on both sides of the river have white walls and black tiles, simple and elegant, the river is wide and calm as a mirror, the scenery is beautiful, a truly picturesque scene. The district also has a variety of religious buildings coexisting. In addition to the Longhua Temple, there is also a Catholic church built at the end of the Qing Dynasty, with the entire building in a Latin style.
The ancient stone bridges, winding clear waters, stone slab streets and alleys, riverside homes, courtyard gates, and historical sites in the Bazi Bridge Historical and Cultural District together constitute a unique historical and cultural landscape, making it a wonderful place for people to appreciate and tour the water town scenery of Shaoxing. In June 2014, the Bazi Bridge Historical and Cultural District, along with the main body of the East Zhejiang Ancient Canal Shaoxing section, was included in the World Cultural Heritage sites of the Grand Canal of China.

Dreaming back to Jiangnan, without mentioning Suzhou and Hangzhou, I have a special fondness for Shaoxing, a city that holds endless stories and emotions
🍶 Saying goodbye to Shaoxing, the reluctance is like aged wine, becoming richer with each taste. The ancient streets and mottled stone bridges seem to whisper the passage of time, bringing the tenderness and sweetness of Jiangnan vividly before my eyes.
📚 Wandering through the words of Mr. Lu Xun, the vibrant life of the Hundred Grass Garden and the tranquil bookish air of the Sanwei Bookstore together sketch vivid springtime scenes. Picking up a few fennel beans, sipping authentic Shaoxing rice wine, the leisure of life and the breath of literature flow between the lips, intoxicating.

I thought Lu Xun's hometown was beautiful! Until I went here
🌉 Shaoxing, not just the beauty of Lu Xun's hometown
As a child, the 'small bridges, flowing water, and households' from the textbooks, I finally experienced it in Shaoxing's West Xiaolu. There is no strong commercial atmosphere here, only the most authentic life of the original residents. 🚣♂️
🍃 West Xiaolu, the peaceful years of the Jiangnan water town
- The boatman uncle: The aunt washing vegetables by the river, everything seems as if the years are peaceful and everything is as usual.
- Movie shooting location: 'The Summer of West River', preserved the 'original flavor' of the water town.

Real experience of taking a child for a walk in Shaoxing
📖 Recently, the picture books that the child has been reading contain many elements of the Jiangnan region, and it is said that to see the spirit of Jiangnan, one must experience Shaoxing.
🥓 The first stop is Anchang Ancient Town, a 1.5-hour drive from Shanghai, followed by another half-hour drive to stay in the Yuecheng District, which is dense with attractions. Anchang is known as the hometown of the 'Shiye', and it is the most lively and authentic ancient town. The biggest difference from other ancient towns is the streets full of cured meats, adding a lot of festive atmosphere to the Chinese New Year. However, the streets here are narrow, the floor tiles are uneven, and it is difficult to push a stroller, and the sanitation is not very good.
🏫 The second stop is the Shaoxing Museum, to learn about the ancient capital of the Yue Kingdom before officially starting the tour. The museum is small but exquisite, following a timeline, it displays Shaoxing's history and culture from the Stone Age to modern times. There are two free guided tours every day. Although the child cannot read, she is happy looking at the various exhibits, as if treasure hunting.
👀 The must-visit attractions on the loop are not far from each other, with short distances walkable and longer distances just a starting taxi fare away.
✔️ Cangqiao Straight Street: A snack street, not difficult to push a stroller, with various snack stalls and popular restaurants such as Xunbaoji, Kong Yiji, and Lantingji, etc. These stores also have branches on other streets. We ate Shaoxing's 'Shao San Xian', yellow wine pudding, and stinky tofu at Xunbaoji, which tasted good. We had the old goose soup at Lantingji, which was quite fresh. Xunbaoji is very crowded, so it's better to scan the code in advance and wait in line.
✔️ The Former Residence of the Sage of Calligraphy: A cultural street, quieter than Cangqiao Straight Street, not difficult to push a stroller, with many shops selling small books and paintings, and young ladies wearing horse-face skirts and hairpins. Followed the trend and checked in at the old grandfather's bookstore.
✔️ Bazi Bridge: A street for daily life, truly a scene of small bridges, flowing water, and riverside homes, suitable for leisurely strolls and sitting quietly. Taking a black-awning boat here is a good experience, 90 yuan per boat, just right for two adults and one child, back and forth in 15 minutes. The downside is that there are too few boats; even though there were only a few people in front of us, we still had to wait quite a while.
✔️ Lu Xun's Hometown: Super crowded even on weekdays! There are interesting things to see, such as the Sanwei Study and the Hundred Grass Garden, which instantly remind me of the books I memorized in the past, but it's really not suitable for walking with a small child. There are thresholds and steps everywhere, making it particularly difficult to push a stroller. Moreover, the child is not interested; she just wants to go out and buy a Green Dragon Sword. When coming out of the former residence, we passed by Huijingxuan, where the yellow wine popsicles are delicious, and the yellow wine milk tea is also good, with Yue opera performances on the stage behind the store. We originally planned to go to the nearby Shen Garden, but after checking, we found that Shen Garden is also not stroller-friendly, so we didn't go. If you have older children, you could consider arranging a night at Shen Garden.
⭐️ The child's favorite place was the 30 Degrees North Latitude Exhibition Hall. It displays scenes from various places along the 30 degrees north latitude from ancient times to the present, and there are multimedia interactions, which are very exciting to play with. At night, the city square is lit up with beautiful lanterns.
💗 Three days of travel time was just right, and the experience might have been better if I hadn't caught a cold. If I come again next time, I will wait until the child is older, after she has learned about Lu Xun's writings, Wang Xizhi's running script, Wang Yangming's philosophy of the mind, etc. Then, when we come to this place of celebrities, perhaps we will have some profound experiences, but it's also fine if we don't.

Severely underestimated tourism! The ancient town of Anchang is full of New Year's atmosphere!!
Perhaps due to the off-season of tourism, there are fewer people, and you can feel the unique life atmosphere of Shaoxing old street. With a casual shot, it's full of storytelling. Anchang ancient town, although it looks commercialized, it is full of New Year's atmosphere. It is recommended to shoot before nine o'clock in the morning or after three o'clock in the afternoon to avoid the crowd. At the same time, the ancient town under the soft light looks unique in the New Year's atmosphere.
Admission: Currently no charge
Features: The local New Year's atmosphere, not commercialized at all.
Food: Every household's door is full of cured meat, soy sauce duck, soy sauce fish, the smell of life is very strong.
Boat ride: It costs 40r for two people at this time. My friend and I didn't take it. The wind was too cold, unbearable!

Shaoxing day trip, with a tour route!
Let's go, from Hangzhou straight to Shaoxing, take the subway line 5 to line 1, it's so easy that it's flying!🚇
Back then, I was a 'wanderer' in my spare time at university, running all over the streets and alleys of Shaoxing. But now I know that the subway between Hangzhou and Shaoxing has been connected for a long time, isn't it a bit out of date haha😅
Time? About four or five hours of leisurely tour, and you can eat and drink heartily, isn't life supposed to be like this?🍻
First, let me talk about my favorite route, where you can truly feel the flavor of the ancient water town. The best feeling about Shaoxing ancient town is that you can hear the sound of life coming from the deep alleys, not the commercial advertisements all over the street. Really, this is super important!
Subway (Lu Xun's hometown station) Exit C - Our starting point!
🏮Shuigouying
Although the walk here is short, the restaurants and snacks on both sides are very grounded, without that high-end feeling, and not so fit for taking pictures. This place still retains the memory of our student days... a bit dirty, but the taste is 100 points!
🏮Cangqiao Straight Street
Continue walking from Shuigouying, at first it's still the original flavor of life, and then it gradually becomes more commercial. I used to think that the night view here was beautiful, the old street atmosphere, the sound of the bell ringing, now... it's a bit more commercial, a bit disappointed.
🏮City Square
The square next to the old city wall, the aunties dancing in the square at night, full of energy.
🏮Xiaoshan Street
This is a paradise for the elderly, a street full of daily necessities, all the daily necessities from my childhood memories are here.
🏮Book Sage's Hometown
The old house of Wang Xizhi, a place I often visited during university, suddenly there was a 'Book Sage's Hometown', did I remember it wrong or has it been renamed?
🏮Eight-character Bridge
The bridge is in the shape of an 8, quite appropriate, right? If you're like me and don't like those commercial places, the Eight-character Bridge is just right! Listen, the sound of water, the sound of life.
🏮Lu Xun's Hometown
This... a very famous place, believe me, you know!
Finally, return to Subway Exit A, and go home with full memories.🏠
Food time:
🥢Plum dried vegetable series: dried vegetable sauce cake, dumplings, buns, only unimaginable, not uneatable!
🥢Stinky tofu: Although everyone says it's delicious, but I... had an unpleasant encounter, still lingering fear.🙊
🥢Cream Xiaopan: Recommend the old lady next to Lu Xun's hometown, not too bad, but that egg smell is too that, forget it, let the cream Xiaopan go.🤢
🥢Yellow wine popsicle: This is not bad, especially the yellow wine coffee, although the taste is a bit light, but the face value is high, you can try it!🍦
Bring some special products home? Yellow wine is a must. Kuaiji Mountain, Guyue Longshan, sounds very feeling, right? But... back to the point, this is still the most cost-effective online shopping! No need to carry heavy shaking all the way, we won't patronize in our scenic area.📦🏠
Shaoxing, your beauty, I ultimately lacked time to taste carefully, but next time I see you, I will still bring new expectations and appetite to explore every corner of you! See you next time, beautiful ancient water town!👋🧳💕

Bazi Bridge, a historical epitome of Shaoxing Water City
Bazi Bridge is located in Baziqiao Straight Street, Yuecheng District, Shaoxing. From the stone carvings on one side of the bridge, it can be known that it was built during the Jia Tai period of the Southern Song Dynasty, and it has a history of more than 800 years. Bazi Bridge is actually composed of three Bazi bridges. Because it looks like the character '八', it is named Bazi Bridge.
Bazi Bridge was announced by the State Council in June 2001 as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In May 2013, as the first ancient bridge in Shaoxing, Bazi Bridge and the other 12 ancient bridges in Shaoxing were merged into the Shaoxing Ancient Bridge Group and included in the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the state. 'A glimpse of the leopard', Bazi Bridge, is actually a historical epitome of Shaoxing Water City.
There are no ancient relics on the current Bazi Bridge Straight Street, which is just an ordinary city road. The highlight is at the Bazi Bridge in the eastern section of Straight Street: under the west end of the bridge, the atmosphere is quite lively: under the dense shade, three or five old men are chatting in the ancient pavilion, and local vendors are shouting and selling agricultural and sideline products... This ordinary civilian life is really leisurely.
The Bazi Bridge Historical and Cultural Block is located between the north-south Guangning Bridge and Dongshuang Bridge. Walking north along the Bazi Bridge river, the life breath of the residents on both sides is even stronger. There are those who open doors for business, those who open shops for catering snacks, and those who paddle in the river and row awning boats. The figures of tourists are endless, and the footsteps keep knocking on the stone road along the river. Almost every family along the river loves beauty and plants strange flowers and plants in front of their homes, which are colorful and extremely beautiful. The Bazi Bridge Historical and Cultural Block can really be described as a miniature version of 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival'.

In the old city of Shaoxing, the ancient sites are everywhere, and an ordinary bridge has a history of nearly a thousand years. The Eight-Word Bridge is hidden in a quiet old town, maintaining the original charm of the Jiangnan water town. A Catholic church next to the
Bazi Bridge has a history of more than 100 years. It was built in 1903 and is the most beautiful church in Shaoxing.
In the Jiangnan area, the ancient bridge called the Bazi Bridge is not the only one, but the Shaoxing Bagua Bridge is the most famous. The bridge was built in the Southern Song Dynasty and has a history of more than 800 years. It is the earliest "overpass" in China.
The eight-story bridge is located at the intersection of three streets and three rivers. The road conditions are complicated and the builders are cleverly conceived. The bridge is named because of its outer shape.
This street, the river is densely covered, the twists and turns are deep, and the stone road is built on the water, which is very quiet. The streets are narrow and narrow, although in the modern city of Shaoxing, you can still feel the simplicity and nature.
The alleys around, the high white walls on both sides, there is no pedestrian in peace, and tourists will not come here.
The surface of the water is calm, and Shaoxing in the early spring is waking up from the winter, and sprouts are just emerging on the branches of the river.
In this low-key and hard-to-find alley, quietly feel the essence of this ancient city of Jiangnan.
