| Shaoxing. 🦄 About Shaoxing: "Eating stinky tofu and riding a black-canopied boat" are the two things my 3-year-old daughter kept talking about after returning from Shaoxing. Although we didn’t get to try the stinky tofu because my parents weren’t fans, and we missed the boat ride due to long queues, these two experiences about Shaoxing stuck in her mind. 📅 Travel Itinerary: A 5-person group with a combined age of 230+ opted for a leisurely stroll. Day 1: From Hangzhou to Shaoxing, checked into Xianheng Hotel, walked to Xun Bao Ji Zhuangyuan Branch (10 min), and after the meal, strolled back to the hotel along Cangqiao Straight Street. After a nap, we wandered around Lu Xun’s Former Residence and Shen Garden until sunset, then took a taxi to Longzhu Garden for goose meat. After a satisfying meal, we walked back to the hotel (30 min). Day 2: After breakfast, we watched the little fish in the hotel’s waterside pavilion, then headed to Bazi Bridge (20 min walk). We explored the ancient bridge, enjoyed a cup of coffee, and played with a little cat 🐱. Then we randomly chose a route back to the hotel and had lunch at a restaurant near the hotel before checking out. 🍜 Food Guide: 🉑 Xun Bao Ji’s drunken shrimp 🦐, drunken chicken 🐔, and crispy fish 🐟 are must-tries. The portions are small, so if you’re a fan, go all in. 🉑 Zhuji Lao Goose Restaurant requires an early visit. We arrived at 7 PM and got the last portion of goose meat, with many other dishes already sold out. My daughter loved the goose meat and goose intestines, and the soy sauce shrimp had a unique flavor—the river shrimp soaked in soy sauce were incredibly fresh and tender. 🏨 Accommodation Guide: Xianheng Hotel was our top choice, with an excellent location that made it easy to get around. The courtyard room came with an afternoon tea set, and the fennel beans were delicious. However, there were some downsides: we booked two adjacent rooms, but one guest didn’t check out until 3 PM, forcing us to wait despite repeatedly explaining to the front desk that we had kids and elderly needing a nap. The room wasn’t cleaned promptly after checkout, which was disappointing. Additionally, it was 35°C that day, and the air conditioning wasn’t turned on—we eventually got a fan to cool down. 💗 Other Tips: 1️⃣ Shaoxing has 600 ancient bridges, earning it the title of "China’s Ancient Bridge Museum." If you’re not traveling with family, you can explore them all and uncover the legends of the water town. 2️⃣ If you have the energy after visiting Bazi Bridge, head to the Former Residence of Wang Xizhi to experience Shaoxing’s ink-wash culture. 3️⃣ If you’re staying near Lu Xun’s Former Residence, set aside time for the Shen Garden Night Tour—it offers a different charm compared to daytime.

In Shaoxing this season, taking pictures of 📷 bitter flowers is a must-take photo. There are many bitter flowers in Shaoxing, but some of them grow by the water. This ancient city with a history of 2,500 years has turned time into rice wine and history into the sound of sculling oars on a black-awning boat. At dawn, the stone slabs by the Eight Character Bridge have just been kissed awake by the dew. Standing on the Southern Song Dynasty stone arch bridge, the white-walled and black-tiled houses on both sides are reflected in the mirror-like water. Occasionally, a boatman wearing a black felt hat poles by, stirring up a river of stars and moonlight. This is the oldest existing overpass system, where seven streets and alleys converge, but there is no hustle and bustle, only the fragrance of Longjing tea wafting from the old teahouse. The white walls of Shen Garden hide China's most tragic love code. Lu You and Tang Wan's calligraphy of "Phoenix Hairpin" is still fresh, and the weeping willows by the Calabash Pond have turned green for eight hundred years. The afternoon sun shines through the carved window lattices, writing mottled verses on the blue brick floor, and visitors can't help but lighten their footsteps, for fear of disturbing the lovesickness in the Song Dynasty lyrics. The twilight of Cangqiao Straight Street is the most intoxicating. Stepping on the Ming Dynasty stone road and passing through shops with wine flags, the mellow aroma of Kuaijishan Shaoxing wine tempts pedestrians to stop. Warm a bowl of 20-year-old vintage, listen to the old man tell the story of King Goujian of Yue in Shaoxing dialect while eating aniseed-flavored broad beans. The red lanterns under the eaves light up one after another, dyeing the entire street crimson like in an ancient painting. When mooring at East Lake at night, the moonlight drapes the hundred-foot cliffs in silver gauze. These rock walls left over from the Han Dynasty quarries have been transformed into natural ink paintings in the sound of oars and the light of lanterns. At the moment when the black-awning boat passes through Taogong Cave, the tinkling sound of water seeping from the rock crevices is like the sound of a zither left behind by the Jin people. Shaoxing has pickled all the romantic figures into the years: Wang Xizhi's Goose Pond is still waiting for its owner to return, the Sanwei Study of Lu Xun's former residence retains the "early" character carved by the teenager, and the sword of Qiu Jin's former residence is still humming in its scabbard. Every ripple here is rippling with allusions, and every blue brick is engraved with articles. While other ancient cities are busy selling hustle and bustle, Shaoxing still maintains the aloofness and composure of a literati. It doesn't need to speak, the water of Jian Lake, the bamboo of Lanting, and the Taidiao wine of Xianheng Hotel have already expressed its thousands of years of elegance.

## The Enchantment of a Water Town Jinan's scenery is undeniably beautiful. The stones of Thousand Buddha Mountain, the waters of Baotu Spring, and the lotus leaves of Daming Lake all present a refreshing and delightful sight. I once lingered there for several days, believing I had seen the best landscapes in the world, feeling quite pleased with myself, thinking nothing could surpass it. However, Shaoxing shattered my confidence with its own unique charm. Upon arriving in Shaoxing, I immediately noticed how different its waters were from Jinan's. Jinan's waters are jumping, gushing, and roaring; while Shaoxing's are silent, flowing, and quiet. Black-awning boats glide through the canals, leaving long trails that are quickly smoothed away by the water, as if they had never existed. The boatmen paddle with their feet, their bodies motionless, only their eyes occasionally moving to observe passersby on the banks. This scene created an illusion that time stood still in this place. Shaoxing's old houses are also quite interesting. Gray bricks and black tiles, with upturned eaves and walls covered in vines. Some houses are tilted yet stubbornly standing, like obstinate elders refusing to bow to the passage of time. I once got lost in a small alley, with high walls on both sides and only a sliver of sky visible above. My footsteps echoed on the stone pavement, making me feel as if I had stepped into another era. What amazed me most were the historical sites of famous scholars hidden among the ordinary streets. Turning an unremarkable corner, I suddenly saw a stone tablet inscribed with "Qingteng Study," realizing this was where Xu Wei once splashed his ink. Entering a teahouse, the owner casually pointed to a table in the corner, saying Lu Xun often read there as a young man. These historical figures seemed so ordinary in Shaoxing, as if they had never left, just stepped out temporarily and might return at any moment. I wandered around Shen Garden for half a day. The garden isn't large, but its rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and towers are arranged with exquisite care. The story of Lu You and Tang Wan is engraved on a stone tablet, the inscriptions now blurred. A young couple stood before the tablet, the girl softly reading the verses while the boy looked bewildered. History and reality converge here, yet pass each other by. I couldn't get used to Shaoxing wine. The dark brown Shaoxing rice wine tastes sweet initially but has a strong aftereffect. Locals drink it with relish, while I could only sip it slowly, soon becoming flushed. The tavern owner laughed at me for "not knowing how to drink," and I didn't argue, thinking perhaps it was this stubborn flavor that nurtured the unyielding character of Shaoxing people. As night fell and lights came on, Shaoxing's night scenery differed from its daytime appearance. The water reflected the lights, creating rippling patterns. Finger-guessing games echoed from taverns, while Yue Opera melodies drifted from theaters. Sitting alone at the Eight-Character Bridge, watching people come and go, I suddenly understood that Shaoxing's beauty lies not in its landscapes but in its way of life. Everything here is alive, breathing, and warm.

This itinerary is suitable for elderly people with moderate physical strength. Afternoon rest at the hotel can be arranged from Day 1 to Day 3. Day 0: Arrive in Hangzhou half a day before the long weekend. After check-in at the hotel, head straight to West Lake. Start walking from Fengbo Pavilion to Orioles Singing in the Willows, then take a boat from Qianwang Temple Pier to the Lesser Yingzhou Isle to see Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. Try the century-old Tongxin Restaurant for dinner, then take a stroll along Cangqiao Straight Street for its beautiful night view (the cover photo shows the northern part of Cangqiao Straight Street). Shaoxing is a small city with most core attractions within walking distance. Day 3: Start early to take a black-awning boat along the south route from City Square, then visit Shen Garden to learn about the story of Lu You and Tang Wan. Afterward, you can visit Lu Xun Memorial Hall and his former residence. In the afternoon, visit Wang Yangming's Former Residence to experience the School of Mind philosophy. The main hall of the residence has distinctive architectural features worth careful appreciation. Then cross Liu Gong Bridge and walk through the West Small Road Historical and Cultural District. Arrive at Ba Zi Bridge around 5-6 PM to capture the sunset view. For dinner, try Xunbaoji on Labor Road or Fu Heng Street. Return to Hangzhou in the evening. Day 4: Head straight to Lingyin Temple Scenic Area early in the morning (note that you need to buy the Lingyin Flying Peak Scenic Area ticket first, then buy a separate Lingyin Temple ticket, known as incense ticket, on-site). After the holiday, the crowd at Lingyin Temple significantly decreases. Return after visiting the Lingyin Flying Peak Scenic Area.

Bazi Bridge in Shaoxing is an ancient bridge with a long history and unique characteristics. Bazi Bridge was built before the Jiatai period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1201–1204). According to *Jiatai Huiji Zhi* (a local chronicle), its name first appeared in this chronicle. It was rebuilt in the fourth year of Baoyou period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1256). The inscription "Built on an auspicious day in the midwinter of the year of Bingchen of the Baoyou period" is carved on the fifth stone pillar at the west end of the bridge. Bazi Bridge is one of the oldest overpasses existing in China. Its unique design and structure hold a significant position in the history of Chinese bridges. Bazi Bridge is located at the east end of Bazhiqiao Zhijie Street, Jishan Subdistrict, Yuecheng District, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. According to the third national cultural relics survey, Shaoxing has more than 700 ancient bridges, rightfully earning the title of "Bridge Hometown". Ba Zi Bridge is one of the most famous ancient bridges in Shaoxing. It is located at the eastern end of Ba Zi Bridge Straight Street in the Yuecheng District's Fushan Subdistrict, spanning the Kuaiji River, and is a uniquely shaped stone arch bridge. The Southern Song Dynasty's "Jiatai Kuaiji Annals" recorded: "Ba Zi Bridge is located to the southeast of the prefectural city, with two bridges slanting opposite each other, shaped like the character '八' (eight), hence the name." From this, it is known that Ba Zi Bridge was built before the Jiatai era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1201-1204). On the fifth pillar on the west side of the main bridge arch, there is an inscription from the reconstruction in the Baoyou Bingchen year (1256) of the Southern Song Dynasty, stating "Built on an auspicious day in midwinter of Baoyou Bingchen year." The bridge deck and steps on both sides are flanked by stone railings and balusters, with cloud-shaped arch decorations on the railings and lotus flower carvings on the baluster heads. Many of the balusters are inscribed with the names of those who donated funds for the bridge's construction.
