Before heading to Mount Bars, you need to be fully prepared. First, you need to understand the local weather conditions and road conditions to choose the best time to travel. Due to the high altitude and harsh climate of Mount Bars, it is recommended to visit during the summer.
The scenic area opens at 8:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm. It may close earlier depending on the daily visitor capacity or weather conditions on the mountain, so please arrive before noon. The viewing area is located at an altitude of over 4,000m, while the visitor center is at 2,600m. After transferring to the scenic area's shuttle bus, you'll have a 20 km ride, ascending from 2,600m to 4,000m, which takes 40–50 mins.
Clothing:
Winter and spring: Down jackets, windbreakers, warm gloves, sunglasses, snow gaiters, hiking boots, and cotton hats (be sure to dress warmly).
Summer: Sun-protective clothing, single-layer windbreakers and pants, sunglasses, hats, and hiking boots.
Accommodation: If you stay in Zhangye, it's a 2 hr drive. We stayed in Yugur County, which is a 1 hr drive. There's a villa-style homestay at the foot of the snow mountain, a few hundred meters from the visitor center, which looks nice. You can consider staying there if you plan to visit multiple times or want convenience. It's around CNY 600–700 per night during the off-season.
