Was not expecting much of Ciqikou: thought it to be highly commercialised and should just be a quick stop. I was completely wrong in my misjudgement. It IS highly commercialised, HOWEVER, I wandered into this temple after seeing it on a street direction post and spent some time in there. WOW! Firstly, the ascending stairway to the main level itself was already making me 'trigger-happy'. I took my time soaking in the nooks and crannies; the terracotta and fall colours around me; and observing local young ladies posing for the cam. Make sure you spend time scrutinising the stone carvings that make the enclosure of one of the halls: interesting depictions of filial piety (chinese characters/proverbs carved at the side explained each banner. I googled one of them and learned about the story behind it. The place is small but it's a great place for photography. I've lived in Shapingba for decades and have been to Ciqikou several times, but this is my first time at Baolun Temple, which was previously called Longyin Temple. Location: Inside Ciqikou Ancient Town. You need to pass through the town, but there are small paths to avoid the crowds. It's at the archway, at the fork in the road. Baolun Temple was built during the Western Wei period (535–556 AD). According to folklore, it was built by Yuchi Gong in the Tang dynasty. Origin: When Zhu Yunwen, the Jianwen Emperor of the Ming dynasty, was forced to abdicate by his fourth uncle, Zhu Di, the Prince of Yan, he fled to Ciqikou and stayed here. Therefore, the temple was also called Longyin Temple. There was a plaque with "Longyin Zen Temple" on it in front of the original temple gate. History: At its peak, Baolun Temple had 16 halls, 372 Buddha statues, hundreds of meditation rooms and monk's quarters, and more than 300 monks. The temple was magnificent, with layers of golden halls. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Baolun Temple was severely damaged when Zhang Xianzhong's army occupied Chongqing.
