Jian - Bailuzhou Academy.
Bailuzhou Academy is located at No. 248 Yanjiang Road, Jizhou District, Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province. It was founded by Jiang Wanli, the governor of Jizhou, in the first year of Chunyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (1241). When the academy was built on Bailuzhou Island in the Song Dynasty, it was named "Bailuzhou Academy" after the island. Bailuzhou Academy played a leading role at that time, and thousands of academies were established and prospered in the urban and rural areas of Jizhou County. In the fourth year of Baoyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (1256), 39 people from Bailuzhou Academy passed the imperial examination, and Wen Tianxiang became the top scholar. Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty personally bestowed the plaque of "Bailuzhou Academy" and hung it on the gate of the academy. The academy became famous and became one of the four major academies in Jiangxi (some say it was one of the three major academies in Jiangxi). In the Song Dynasty, there was a pond in front of the academy, a stone bridge in the middle, and a gate with a plaque from Emperor Lizong. Inside, there was a Lingxing Gate, a Hall of Confucius, a Daoxin Hall, a Fengyue Tower, a Shanchang Hall, a Yunzhang Pavilion, a Jujie Pavilion, and a Yuyi Pavilion. The academy had a Temple of Confucius, a Lingxing Gate, a Yunzhang Pavilion, a Daoxin Hall, a Shizhu Hall, a Fengyue Tower, a Yuyi Pavilion, dormitories, and a kitchen. It had more than 800 mu of land, and the rent was 50 taels of silver per year. It also built a temple to worship the two Cheng Confucians, and added Zhou, Zhang, Shao, and Zhu to form the Six Gentlemen Temple. "This academy can accommodate hundreds of students." It also collected many books and materials, and copied the "Bailudong Academy Manifesto" on the side of Daoxin Hall. The existing ancient buildings of Bailuzhou Academy, except for Fengyue Tower and Yunzhang Pavilion, include Zhongshan Courtyard, Wenshan Courtyard, Honglou, Banyue Pond, and Fugu Pavilion.

Bailuzhou Academy is a place of culture and learning.
It was early autumn in Ji'an, Jiangxi, but the temperature was still as high as 34°C. However, the tight schedule and hot weather did not stop us from witnessing the cultural highlands with our own eyes.
Bailuzhou Academy in Ji'an, Jiangxi was founded by Jiang Wanli, the governor of Jizhou in the Southern Song Dynasty, in 1241 AD, and continued until the end of the Qing Dynasty. During this period, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times due to military disasters and floods. Bailuzhou Academy, together with Bailudong Academy in Lushan, Ehu Academy in Yanshan, and Yuzhang Academy in Nanchang, is known as the four major academies in ancient Jiangxi and was an important place for cultural education at that time.
Bailuzhou is located in the heart of the Ganjiang River in Ji'an City. It is said that it was named after its shape like an egret, and the lush forests and bamboo on the island attracted many egrets to inhabit. There is also a saying that it originated from the famous sentence "Three mountains are half falling outside the blue sky, and two waters are divided into Bailuzhou" in the poem of Li Bai, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, and the academy was named after the island.
The establishment of Bailuzhou Academy is closely related to the profound cultural heritage of Ji'an. Ji'an was known as Luling in ancient times. Since the Tang Dynasty, literati such as Du Shenyan and Yan Zhenqing have left their footprints here, promoting the development of local culture. By the Song Dynasty, Ouyang Xiu and others had started the prosperity of articles, making Ji'an a stronghold of cultural education.
The architectural complex of the academy includes Yunzhang Pavilion, Fengyue Building, etc. These buildings not only have traditional Chinese architectural styles, but also incorporate the characteristics of the Republic of China. Bailuzhou Academy not only cultivated many literati and scholars, but also nurtured national heroes like Wen Tianxiang. Today, Bailuzhou Academy has been designated as a cultural relic protection unit in Jiangxi Province, and the government at all levels has allocated funds for maintenance many times. Bailuzhou Academy has become an important cultural landmark in Ji'an City, attracting many tourists to visit and learn, and to get a glimpse of the style of the academy in the past. At the same time, Bailuzhou, where the academy is located, has also become a cultural oasis integrating education, tourism, leisure and ecology, and continues to inherit the essence of Luling culture.

A One-Day Tour Over 'Luling'
On the sixteenth day of the fifth month of the Jia Chen year in the lunar calendar, I arrived at Ji'an Railway Station during the hour of Mao. Today is the summer solstice. Ji'an, Jiangxi, anciently known as 'Luling' and 'Jizhou', is located in the south of the Yangtze River. Here, there are shared electric bicycles, which I am pleased to find. I went to the east bank of the Gan River, where the sky was tinged with a faint blue-green, giving a sense of freshness. The river is wide, but the current is also swift. On the riverbank, people were already exercising in the morning. I found a noodle shop that was open and had a bowl of scallion oil dry noodles to relieve the fatigue of the journey. It was still early, so I rode an electric bike around the old town, admiring Ji'an as the true south of the Yangtze River.
At the hour of Chen, I took a bus to Qingqingyuan Mountain, which is located more than twenty li to the east of the city and was praised by the famous Southern Song poet Yang Wanli as 'the number one scenic spot in Jiangxi'. A short bus ride will get you there. At the foot of the mountain, there are some good fields where farmers are already busy. Walking another li, there is an ancient temple called 'Jingju Temple', which is the ancestral temple of the Buddhist Zen Qingyuan sect. That day, the temple was full of local believers. Not far away, there is a 'Yangming Academy', founded by Wang Yangming for teaching. Both places are worth visiting. Before the sun got too hot, I started climbing the mountain. The mountain is not high, but climbing it is enough to see the whole city of Ji'an. You can return the same way you came, or you can descend from the other side of the mountain. Along the way, I encountered people installing surveillance equipment, carrying heavy poles and panting, stopping to rest after not walking far, which was also hard work. Halfway up the mountain, the reservoir below came into view. Passing through the reservoir, the trail followed a stream, and at that moment, the sound of water and birdsong accompanied me, and I occasionally imitated the birds' calls in response. When I reached the foot of the mountain, I returned to the starting point of the climb, and a bowl of cold noodles by the roadside was truly refreshing. I took the bus back to the city center, and by noon, I was ravenous. I had a late breakfast of soy milk, fried dough sticks, and stir-fried rice noodles on the street, then went to 'Bailuzhou Academy', which was very worthwhile. After visiting the academy, I rode a small electric bike around the city for a while, then went to the train station and bid farewell to Luling.
I heard that Ji'an also has Jizhou Kiln, and 'Jingdezhen Tao Lu' praised Jizhou Kiln with the phrase 'Jizhou Kiln existed before Jingdezhen', which shows its status. I hope to visit again next time.

🌈 Ji'an is an off-the-beaten-path travel destination, without the crowds of people. I came to visit friends in Ji'an and took the opportunity to wander around nearby. It was my first time visiting Bailuzhou Academy, and initially, I wasn't very interested, just thinking of it as a casual outing. But after entering, I found the place to be quite beautiful.
☁️ I went there around three in the afternoon, and you can sit on the long corridor bridge to rest a bit and watch the mottled light and shadows. It's really leisurely and comfortable.
Inside Bailuzhou Academy, the big trees provide a canopy overhead, creating a serene and tranquil environment. It's also a great spot for photography.
