[Thailand (Bangkok)] Experience elephant riding in Ayutthaya
There are two elephant riding spots in Ayutthaya!
① Elephant Camp
② Elephant Village
I experienced it at ② Elephant Village!
This place is adjacent to Ayutthaya Floating Market!
About a 20-minute walk from Ayutthaya Station!
But I recommend going there by tuk-tuk or rental bicycle✨
In addition to the elephant riding experience, you can also take commemorative photos with tigers!
There are also plenty of souvenir shops, so you can enjoy a lot! !
【Things to note about elephant riding】
① It's surprisingly shaky! !
▶︎If it's your first time, a short course (about 15 to 20 minutes) might be best!
② It's OK to take photos while riding the elephant, but be careful!
▶︎It seems that in some cases photography is prohibited, but the mahout of the elephant I rode said it was okay to take photos!
However, please be careful not to drop your smartphone!
③ It is essential to pay a tip to the mahout!
▶︎They will take photos for you, so you will be asked to give a tip!
100 baht for the elephant and 100 baht for the mahout!
They let me sit on the elephant's head and took photos for me 🙆♀️
Prices at Elephant Village are negotiable!
They initially said it would be 1500 baht (about 6000 yen) for 30 minutes,
but in the end we got 20 minutes for 600 baht (2400 yen) per person!
Price negotiation is a must!!
If you go to Ayutthaya, elephant riding is a must!!
Please keep the precautions in mind and enjoy your time✨

Discovering Ayutthaya: Thailand’s Ancient Capital Full of Timeless Wonders
Just a short train ride from Bangkok, Ayutthaya offers travelers an unforgettable glimpse into Thailand’s royal past. Once the thriving capital of the Siamese Kingdom, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is now a peaceful city filled with ancient temples, serene river views, and historical charm.
Why Visit Ayutthaya?
Ayutthaya Historical Park is the main draw, with spectacular ruins like Wat Mahathat, where you’ll find the iconic Buddha head entwined in tree roots. Don’t miss Wat Phra Si Sanphet, once the grandest temple in the old capital, or Wat Chaiwatthanaram, stunning at sunset along the Chao Phraya River.
The city is ideal for a day trip or an overnight stay, with bike rentals making it easy to explore the ruins and hidden gems. Many visitors also enjoy taking a longtail boat ride around the island city for a unique view of its historic temples and river life.
What to Eat
Try local specialties like roti sai mai (Ayutthaya-style cotton candy wrapped in roti) and boat noodles — rich and savory bowls traditionally served from canal-side boats.
How to Get There
Ayutthaya is about 1.5 hours by train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station or Bang Sue Grand Station. Train No. 209 is one of the popular options for travelers heading there in the morning.
Insider Tips
Visit early to beat the heat and crowds.
Wear respectful clothing if entering temple ruins.
Don’t skip the Ayutthaya Floating Market — it’s touristy but fun.
Ayutthaya is a perfect mix of culture, history, and scenery — an easy escape from Bangkok that feels like stepping back in time. Whether you're into photography, history, or peaceful strolls among ruins, Ayutthaya is not to be missed.

【Ayutthaya】A Day to Experience Thailand's History
Ayutthaya is located about 50 kilometers north of Bangkok. Among Thailand's seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of them is the ruins in Ayutthaya. Since it's not too far from Bangkok, you can easily explore the famous spots by joining a one-day tour! Here's a guide to spending a day in Ayutthaya.
① Wat Mahathat (Photos 1 & 2)
You might have seen this before—a Buddha head embedded in tree roots. If you studied world history, you may recall seeing it in your textbook. The Buddha's head was said to have fallen during the Burmese-Siamese War and became entwined in the tree roots, serving as a poignant reminder of the horrors of past wars. The temple grounds are quite expansive, with many headless Buddha statues scattered around. It's a place where you can deeply feel the weight of history, so take your time to explore beyond the famous Buddha head in the tree.
② Wat Phra Si Sanphet (Photos 3–5)
This is another iconic temple in Ayutthaya, known for its three aligned chedis (stupas). These chedis are said to contain the remains of a king and his children. Similar structures can also be found in Bangkok, making this site an important part of Thailand's Buddhist history.
③ Wat Lokayasutharam (Photo 6)
This unique temple features a massive reclining Buddha statue, measuring 28 meters in length and 5 meters in height. The Buddha's serene, smiling expression gives off a calming presence, as if watching over us. While the temple is relatively large, many of its structures were destroyed during wars, leaving scattered ruins. One can only imagine its golden splendor when it was first built.
Nearby, you'll find souvenir shops, so take a stroll and explore the area.
④ Elephant Ride Experience
There are several places in Ayutthaya where you can enjoy an elephant ride. Since elephants are synonymous with Thailand, it's a must-try experience to feel the history of Ayutthaya while riding one 🐘. Short courses of 5–10 minutes are available for under 1,000 yen, making it quite affordable! If you want to explore more of Ayutthaya's ruins, consider opting for a 20-minute plan.
At the end, you can even tip the elephant, and they'll happily accept it with their trunk!
Ayutthaya is brimming with history—definitely worth a visit!

Experience riding an elephant in Ayutthaya! Including a kiss!?
#Let'sGoToAsia
I rode an elephant in Ayutthaya!
The view from the back as it leisurely walked was somehow very special.
And after it was over...
The elephant trainer gave the signal "Kiss!"
The elephant pounded my head and shoulders with its trunk! lol
No, no, that was a total attack (lol)!
The strength of the trunk was greater than I expected, and I was surprised,
but I loved how cute it was trying so hard.
It was an experience that can only be found in Thailand, and an unforgettable memory!

Ayutthaya Elephant Ride... and an Unexpected "Kiss"!?
Riding an elephant in Ayutthaya was such a unique and peaceful experience—
until the very end, when the elephant gave me a surprise "kiss"!
The mahout gave a signal,
and the elephant gently (or not so gently...) pressed its trunk against my cheek.
Let’s just say... it felt more like a headbutt than a peck!
But the effort and charm were 100% adorable.
Such a memorable part of our Thailand adventure!

Prices are cheap in Thailand and it's easy to spend lavishly! Bangkok! 🇹🇭
Schedule in Thailand
Day 1: Evening
Arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport, took a Grub taxi for about 40 minutes to a hotel near Khao San Road! 🚕
Day 2: Activities started at 6:00
We experienced the Ayutthaya ruins, elephant riding, floating markets, etc. on a tour we had booked in advance (mine was a one-day tour for just over 10,000 yen)
It was really hot. I went in February, and it was about 35 degrees 💦
Day 3: Since the hotel was near Khao San Road, we went to Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew, which are World Heritage sites!
Wat Pho: 300 baht
Wat Phra Kaew: 500 baht
Entrance fees are required.
It's about 2 kilometers, so we walked to save on taxi fares, but it was too hot! 🥵In the end, we bought ice cream and water from roadside stalls, so it was a wash!
Day 4: Moved from Don Muang Airport to Phuket Airport.
This is the first time I've introduced my itinerary in Bangkok.
It's really hot and really cheap. (From my point of view)
Water at 7-Eleven costs 6-7 baht, which is about 25 or 30 yen in Japanese yen!! So cheap!
Apparently, tap water doesn't agree with Japanese people and gives them stomach problems, so I also bought water for cup ramen etc. It's helpful that it's cheap even if you buy a lot♩

Bangkok Ayutthaya Elephant Camp
Elephant Camp, an elephant riding spot in Ayutthaya
It took about an hour and a half by chartered taxi from Bangkok.
In Ayutthaya, you can ride an elephant at two places: Elephant Village and Elephant Camp.
We rode an elephant along the roads around the ruins!
I was surprised to see that we were moving along roads where cars were passing by!
We didn't make a reservation, but we were able to ride right away.
There are about 20 elephants? I think you won't have to wait long.
It took about 15 minutes, but it was just right because it was quite shaky!
They asked for a tip when they took a photo of us and at the end. We gave them 20 baht each, a total of 40 baht.
It seemed like my kids had a lot of fun, so I'm glad we went!

Enjoy a day trip to Ayutthaya by chartering a taxi 🇹🇭🐘🚕
If you're going from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, chartering a taxi is convenient! If you negotiate around Bangkok Station, you can have a private tour of your favorite tourist spots for a day.
The appeal of chartering a taxi
✅ About 10,000 yen per person per day (price can be reduced depending on negotiation!)
✅ Free to visit your favorite places – Smoothly move to Ayutthaya ruins and popular spots!
✅ The driver will be waiting – You can enjoy lunch and sightseeing without worrying.
Spots actually visited
🚗 Ayutthaya specialty, river shrimp restaurant: Enjoy plump shrimp at a restaurant with a great atmosphere along the river!
🐘 Elephant Village: Experience riding an elephant and enjoy the scenery of Ayutthaya from a different perspective.
🏛 Ruin tour: Sightseeing in a total of about 4 places, including historical temples and ruins.
The end of the trip...
Finally, I was taken to my hotel in Sukhumvit, but the traffic around Sukhumvit is so bad that it can be hard to move. I recommend traveling with plenty of time!
If you want to get around Ayutthaya comfortably, chartering a taxi is cost-effective and offers a lot of freedom, so I recommend it! #0yentravelFebruary2025

There are stores of foreign brands such as VICTORIA'S SECRET that are not available in Japan in Thailand, so please check them out💞
As for the money exchange, I think the store with the green mark in the last photo had the best rate and was safe😌! Be careful as there are other money exchanges nearby where you may be touted‼ ️

💞Reasons why we recommend it: It's rare to have the chance to interact with elephants and ride them for a stroll, so this is a must-do spot when you come to Thailand! The elephant's skin is thick but surprisingly soft lol
🏖️Atmosphere/Facilities:
You can ride an elephant with a mahout and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Ayutthaya at a leisurely pace.
While riding the elephant, you can view famous temples such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat from the outside, and a different view from the elephant's high vantage point.
There is also an activity where you can cross the river with the elephant, so you can feel one with nature.
🕰️Opening hours: Currently closed

💞Reasons why we recommend it: We tried riding an elephant in Ayutthaya!
It only took about 10 minutes, but it was a valuable experience to be able to see the ruins while riding an elephant. It was more shaky than I expected, so if you're sensitive to shaking, be careful!! It seems that you can also feed the elephants, so it's recommended for those who want to interact with elephants and those who love animals!!

Visiting Bangkok, Thailand in March 2024
The weather was good and the air was dry during February and March, so it was comfortable to spend time there.
I heard that you can ride an elephant when you visit the Ayutthaya ruins, so I tried it. You can ride an elephant around the Ayutthaya ruins, and I think it cost about 2,000 yen in Japanese yen.
At the end, they take a photo with the elephant, but you are charged a tip, so if you don't want one, you can decline.
By the way, I had my photo taken as a souvenir of my trip.

Elephant ride in Ayutthaya
A great experience for kids. We booked a 20mins elephant ride and even experience the elephant going into the water and walking in the water. The Thais believed that sitting on the elephant and bathing with the elephant will bring you luck. But not highly recommended for people who have motion sickness as it is quite a rocky ride. Young children ride for free, but above a certain age, you gotta pay. #Elephant ride #Ayutthaya
