A large highway rest stop with delicious onion soup
After staying in Kobe for a day, we drove to Awaji Island. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Kobe via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. The first stop was Awaji Highway Oasis. Highway Oasis is a rest stop on the highway 🛣️, but this one is larger, with souvenir shops and restaurants.
The first thing I did when I arrived at Highway Oasis was to try the free onion soup. First, take a small paper cup next to the onion soup machine, turn on the tap, and you can taste 2 kinds of hot onion soup, which are sweet and rich.
After trying it, go to the souvenir shop. Here you can find local specialties from Kobe, Awaji Island and Naruto, including Awaji Island onions, onion soup, milk pancakes, onion-flavored seasoning, Naruto Kintoki, Kobe curry sauce, etc. I spent about 10,000 yen and gained a lot.
After buying souvenirs, we went to the restaurant on the second floor for dinner. There are two restaurants on the second floor, one is Sushitomi for sushi🍣, and the other is Mikeya which we visited. I chose Mikeya mainly because I wanted to try the Awaji onion set meal and Awaji beef. Once again, I felt the power of the Japanese, using onions to cook different things, including onion noodle soup, tofu with onions, onion tempura rice, etc. The onions on Awaji Island are really delicious, much stronger than the onions you usually eat!
