Parts of this river basin were amongst the earliest settled areas in Western Australia. Difficult beginnings were described as -Early European settlers in the Avon region faced extremely difficult conditions, not least from the Avon River itself. The river flooded in 1847, 1849, 1857, 1859 and 1862, and then again in 1902 and 1926. Lake Yealering in the Shire of Wickepin is the point of origin for the upper Avon River, and the catchment size above the confluence with the Salt River at Yenyening Lakes is 91,500 square kilometres (35,300 sq mi).[3] The basin covers much of the Western Australian wheatbelt[4] and extends beyond that in some areas near almost-always-dry Lake Moore in the northeast, water is received regularly from only the extreme western edge of the basin. York’s original suspension bridge was built in 1888. In 1896 the bridge was lengthened and moved to its current position and has been rebuilt many times due to damage from flood waters.- yorkwa.gov It was an amazing drive w my cousin and I really loved it! It was like going back to the old bridge back home, not the same wooden walk path (bec we had the steel one) but it’s the same vibe!😉 Get out and drive! You won’t regret it! York’s original suspension footbridge first opened in 1888 after petitioning from residents for a footbridge to link pedestrian access east and west. A flood in 1891 saw the river flowing a metre above the foot-walk, but the bridge survived. The bridge was flooded again in 1893, widened and repaired in 1894 and further lengthened and moved to its current position in 1896.
