If you visit Fukuoka and are unsure where to go, and if you have a JR Pass, Mount Aso is a great option to consider, even though it requires multiple transfers. Traveling there: If you have a JR Pass, take the Shinkansen to Kumamoto, then transfer to a train to Aso Station.
