2025 Maebashi Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in March)

I went to the one and only art hotel "Shiraiya Hotel / SHIROIYA HOTEL" ✨ Shiraiya Ryokan was founded in Maebashi, Gunma during the Edo period and was loved by many famous people. It had a history of about 300 years, but closed down in 2008. And in 2020, "Shiraiya Hotel" was reborn under the design of Sou Fujimoto. I'm happy to finally be able to go to this hotel that I've been wanting to go to ever since it opened. When I arrived, I was surprised to see that the Heritage Tower, which is eye-catching from the outside, is also a work of art (Pic.7). When I entered the building, I felt like I had wandered into a museum, with all the art works inside. And above all, there was an atrium that went up to the 4th floor. Leandro Erlich's Lightning Pipes were installed as if they were threading through the stairs, which was fantastic. It was also impressive that I could experience the art works just by going up and down the stairs... At night, it was illuminated in various colors, which was also fantastic. This cafe at the top of Uniqlo isn't large and there's a small but seemingly adequate amount of seating for the fast turnover. We tried the special Geisha blend hand-drip coffee and it was a bit fruity but otherwise not particularly special. Still, it was an ok cup of black coffee. They also sell a few small packaged snacks to go with your coffee. Not bad for a convenient coffee break whilst shopping at Uniqlo, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come for the coffee. Maebashi Galleria, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture While staying at Shiraiya Hotel, I wanted to visit a nearby art spot, so I visited this facility. Maebashi Galleria was born as a source of new culture in a place where a movie theater had been located for over 100 years and for nearly 60 years, a place where local people could come into contact with new culture, gather, and become familiar with culture and exchange in their daily lives. The sacred object is Mount Akagi The enshrined deity is Princess Akagi (Akagi Daimyojin) It is the head shrine of all Akagi shrines across the country. Right next to the lake is a magnificent vermilion-painted shrine building, which is very conspicuous. Benten Shrine in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃 A shrine located on the banks of Lake Onuma in Akagi. It is enshrined as a sub-shrine of Akagi Shrine. Right next to it is the site of the old Akagi Shrine, and you can see the stone monument and the site indicating it, as well as the sacred sake that was offered there. At Benten Shrine, there is a stone torii gate, a stone slab monument explaining the shrine's history, and a small shrine. Beyond that is the beautiful and expansive Lake Onuma. #cherryblossom2024 Floral climax on the slopes of Mount Akagi Akagi is one of the hundred best places in Japan to watch cherry blossoms. This mountain is perfect for coming here in the spring season and admiring the views. How to get there The Akagi Cherry Blossom Festival, held in Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture, is easily accessible by public transport. In Tokyo, take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Takasaki Station. There, transfer to the Ryomo Line to Maebashi Station. The trip will only take about an hour. You can also take the JR Takasaki line from Ueno Station to Maebashi. It will take 1 hour and 45 minutes. You can get around the city by bus. The circular route starts at the southern exit from Maebashi Station. An unlimited one-day pass costs 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for children. The bus stops at the Gumma Flower Park and the German-style village Akagi Kronenburg Yuhodo. The cherry blossom festival is held within a five-minute walk from the village. Romantic moments A strip planted with sakura stretches along the slope of Mount Akagi for 3.5 kilometers. Rows of trees form a stunning airy pink tunnel above the trail. When the wind blows, a gentle floral rain falls from them. Traditional treats During the flowering season, visitors can buy food and drinks at the numerous stalls. A variety of dishes are prepared here, which are served at Japanese festivals — yakitori, yakisoba, takoyaki. Please note that it is very crowded here during the event. I was enjoying the spring season to the fullest at the Senbonzakura Festival venue.☀️ Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be quite crowded as it is the final weekend, and there will be heavy traffic as we enter the parking lot in front of the venue. It might be a good idea to start early.🌸
