All Trip Moments about Ares del Maestre
Even a city on a hilltop cannot be without a church.
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Castellón (Region)
The Church of Ares, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, has been the seat of the town's parish since the Christian conquest of the area in the early 13th century. Destroyed by Philip V's troops during the War of the Succession, the current temple, except for part of the bell tower, was built between 1717 and 1739. Its unique feature is that the bell tower is lower than the roof.

Castles of Roman origin
Mediterranean Coast Tour in Spain ~ Castellón (Region)
It is now a wonderful experience to visit the entire space including the castle and its surroundings. It is wonderful to discover these buildings from the 1800s, impeccable maintenance, cleanliness, service in local bars, those narrow streets and well-maintained old buildings.
The castle originally originated in the Roman period, but unfortunately in July 1707 during the War of the Spanish Succession, the new commander of Ares, Mr. St. George, a supporter of Philip V of the Bourbon Dynasty, blew up the castle after the castle surrendered, because the castle could never be conquered by siege, so the agreement signed by the Austrian commander after the siege and loss of the city of Tortosa was to blow up the castle to prevent all adverse opposing forces.

The town of Ares del Maestre is ideally situated atop a rocky hill overlooking the beautiful and rugged landscape of the El Maestrazgo region.
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Castellón (Region)
On the town's mound we have the ruins of an ancient castle, where Iberian remains were found, as well as several facades of the Arab wall that transformed the Champ de Mars into a parade ground in the Middle Ages.
The small city centre stretches to the foot of the castle hill, with the most striking feature being the 18th-century parish church with its Baroque facade. The bell tower attached to the main body has the property of being shorter than the rest of the building.
The main square (also known as the Plaza Mayor) is the nerve center of the village, in which we can find other important buildings such as Los Porches, the old exchange house with its Gothic-Mudéjar arches, and a 13th-century prison. The Town Hall is a Gothic building built on the ancient city walls. Its most notable feature is the chapter house built in the 10th century.
Another interesting landmark of this village is the Barranc dels Molins , where we find five water mills (17th-18th centuries) that are real masterpieces of engineering. We can also visit the Remigia Caves, where precious examples of Levantine-style cave art are preserved.
