Crossing Time and Space: The Cultural Charm of Anping Fort
At the end of June in Tainan, the scorching sun illuminated the ancient brick walls of Anping Fort, making them stand out vividly. On that day, I, along with a few French friends, set foot on this historic land. Despite the sweltering weather, everyone's enthusiasm remained undiminished. As my friends listened to the historical tales of Anping Fort, they were filled with interest and respect for this structure that has witnessed centuries of history. Watching their attentive expressions, I felt a deep sense of pride, knowing that the stories of this land were quietly taking root in the hearts of my foreign friends.

can take a bus directly from Tainan to Anping Fort, near Anping Old Street.
Anping Castle, anciently known as "Orange", "Zeelandia", "Anping City", "Taiwan City", located in Tainan City, Taiwan.
was first built in 1624 and is the oldest castle in Taiwan. Since the founding of the city, it was once the center of the Dutch rule of Taiwan, and it was once the residence of the three generations of the Zheng dynasty. The ancient castle building houses are purely red bricks. At dusk, they are reflected in the setting sun. The scenery of Anping Xizhao was selected by the Taiwan Provincial Government in 1953 as one of the eight scenic spots in Taiwan.
The iconic building of Anping Castle is the watchtower. In the low buildings of Tainan, the watchtower is relatively tall. On the far street, you will I can see this watchtower.
There are many traces of the Dutch year, there are forts, museums, walls and so on.
The successful beer inside the store caught our attention, Zheng Cheng successfully drank beer? Whether it is the beer that Zheng Chengxin drank, I hope that we will succeed in the future!

A Glimpse of the National Hero Zheng Chenggong's Tainan Anping Fortress.
This time, I traveled to Tainan and visited one of its most iconic landmarks, the Anping Old Fort. This fortress has witnessed nearly 400 years of history, from Dutch rule, the Ming Zheng period, the Qing Dynasty, and Japanese occupation to the present day. It can be said that it has seen the evolution of the old city of Tainan Anping.
Looking into its history, the Dutch built Taiwan's first fortress in 1624 in Dayuan (now Anping), which was then called Fort Zeelandia. Later, Zheng Chenggong drove out the Dutch and established the first Han Chinese regime in Taiwan's history, renaming the place Anping. This is the origin of the current name 'Anping Old Fort.' The Zheng family ruled here for three generations, so it was also called the 'King's City' at that time. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Taiwan was officially incorporated into the territory, and the political center shifted to the inner city (Chihkan Tower, Grand Matsu Temple). Anping Old Fort gradually lost its importance, and many buildings were later dismantled. For example, Shen Baozhen dismantled the outer city wall to build 'Eternal Golden Castle,' a typical case of robbing Peter to pay Paul 😆.
Now, when I visit Anping Old Fort, I can hardly see the sea (just a glimpse in the distance), but hundreds of years ago, it was surrounded by the ocean. At that time, many cannons were installed around the fortress for coastal defense.
There are many delicious foods near the old fort, especially shaved ice, which is very tasty 😋... You should give it a try.
I stayed here for about 3 hours, enjoying food, drinks, and entertainment!
🚴: From Tainan Train Station, you can take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Tainan 88 Anping Line, the Tainan Double-Decker Sightseeing Bus (West Loop), or City Bus No. 2 or 19 to Anping Old Fort Station. I recommend buying a one-day pass for the 88 Anping Line and 99 Taijiang Line for more convenient transportation.
Ticket Prices: The tickets are quite cheap, with a full ticket costing 70 NTD, a half ticket 35 NTD, and free for Tainan residents with proof. Discounted tickets are also available online, which can be used immediately upon purchase.

[Anping Castle] Relanzha City ruins, showing more than three hundred years of vicissitudes and vicissitudes under the golden light
#AugustGood Places 2024 #100 Ways to Travel
In 1634, the Dutch who occupied Anping built the defensive fortress of Relanje City, also known as Orange City or Relanje Fort. In 1662, Zheng Chenggong captured the city and renamed it Anping Town, also known as Taiwan City, Anping Town, Anping City, Royal City, Hongmao City, and Chikan City. During the Qing Dynasty, when the Qing Dynasty destroyed the city of Relanzha and built another golden city, it was rebuilt by the Japanese. After World War II, it was called "Anping Castle". However, the only remaining remains of the real city are the old banyan trees in the south wall of the outer city wall. The brick wall was renovated by the city government in 1975 and is open for sightseeing from Monday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The full ticket is 70 yuan and the half ticket is 35 yuan. Citizens are free with their ID cards.
Since the doors were closed at 17:30, I could only take a look at it from afar, but through the iron pillars I could still watch the ancient city illuminated by golden lights, showing the vicissitudes and vicissitudes of more than three hundred years.

Tainan - Anping Fort (Fort Zeelandia Museum)
Upon arriving at Anping Fort, the first thing that catches your eye is the main red brick structure of the fort and the towering watchtower. Many people head straight for the watchtower because from the top, you can overlook the entire fort and the city of Tainan. Of course, I did the same! Climbing up is not difficult, but the weather in Tainan is really hot, so it's recommended to come early or bring a water bottle to make it easier.
The horizon where the sea meets the sky in the distance, and the sea breeze instantly makes you feel much cooler. The entire fort looks ancient and charming, and with the surrounding greenery, it's a perfect spot for taking photos and checking in.
Inside the fort's exhibition hall, there are some simple historical introductions and artifacts. It's not as heavy as you might imagine; instead, it's like stepping into a corner of time, seeing a glimpse of early life in Taiwan.
The gardens around the fort are lush with greenery, and the large trees provide plenty of shade. When you're tired from walking, you can easily find a bench under the shade to sit and rest, which is super comfortable. This place not only has historical traces but also a very relaxing atmosphere, making it feel like you can unwind for an entire afternoon. I heard there are many local delicacies nearby, such as tofu pudding and oyster omelets, so after touring the fort, it's also nice to take a few steps to find some food.
In summary, Anping Fort is not just a historical site; it's more like a place where you can slow down and enjoy some leisure time. If you have time to visit Tainan, I highly recommend coming here for a walk. It won't disappoint you!

Tainan's Three Major Historical Sites
Anping Fort
Anping Fort, originally named Fort Zeelandia, is one of Taiwan's oldest forts, built by the Dutch in 1624. This fort not only witnessed Taiwan's early trade prosperity but also served as the center of Dutch colonial rule. The initial design of the fort included a square inner city and a rectangular outer city, highlighting its strategic defensive importance. In 1661, after Koxinga expelled the Dutch, he renamed it Anping and made it the residence of the Zheng dynasty, hence it was also known as 'King's City' or 'Taiwan City.' Today, visitors can still see the well-preserved southern wall of the outer city intertwined with old banyan trees, narrating over 300 years of history.
Anping Tree House
Anping Tree House was originally a warehouse of Tait & Co. During the Japanese colonial period, it was used by the Japan Salt Company along with the Tait & Co. building. After World War II, the warehouse was briefly used by Taiwan Salt Company but was later abandoned, allowing banyan trees to grow freely inside and outside the building, eventually creating the unique 'tree in house, house in tree' landscape seen today. This symbiosis of nature and man-made structures has made Anping Tree House a popular spot for exploration and photography. In 2004, the site was redeveloped with overhead iron walkways and wooden paths, making it easier for visitors to explore this unique historical landscape.
Eternal Golden Castle
Eternal Golden Castle, also known as 'Anping Big Fort' or 'Erkunshen Fort,' is a Western-style fort built during the Qing Dynasty to defend against foreign invasions. Designed by a French engineer, it features a bastion-style square structure with protruding corners, a concave center, and a moat, showcasing advanced military design concepts. After its completion, Eternal Golden Castle played a significant role in the Sino-French War and the First Sino-Japanese War. During the Japanese colonial period, the fort fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. After several restorations, it has now become a famous tourist attraction in Tainan. Every spring, the surrounding yellow trumpet trees bloom, adding to the scenic beauty of the site.
Reflections
Anping Fort, Anping Tree House, and Eternal Golden Castle bear witness to Tainan's rich and colorful history. Visiting these places is not only an exploration of history but also a journey back in time.
At Anping Fort, standing beside the weathered walls, one can almost feel the intense confrontations between the Dutch and the Zheng dynasty, along with the subsequent centuries of change and decline. The remaining red brick walls and the old banyan trees climbing over them silently tell ancient stories.
The existence of Anping Tree House amazes visitors with the marvelous combination of nature and man-made structures. The abandoned warehouse intertwined with the roots of banyan trees creates a unique landscape. It is both a natural wonder and a historical witness, evoking a sense of the power of time and the resilience of life.
Eternal Golden Castle showcases the military wisdom of the late Qing Dynasty and the fusion of Chinese and Western technologies. This sturdy fort played a crucial role in wars, but as time passed, its military value diminished, and it has now become an important site for understanding history and appreciating architectural aesthetics. Walking through the area during the blooming season of the yellow trumpet trees, one can truly appreciate the harmonious beauty of history and nature.
Overall, these three historical sites not only reflect Tainan's profound historical heritage but also demonstrate the city's commitment to cultural preservation. Tainan's historical buildings and cultural atmosphere are undoubtedly treasures not to be missed by history and culture enthusiasts. Each visit brings new insights and emotions.
