Kerama Islands--First experience of canoeing on Zamami Island
#MarchGoodPlaces2025
Zamami Island is located in the central part of the Kerama Islands, with an area of 6.7 square kilometers. It is under the jurisdiction of Zamami Village, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is one of the four inhabited islands in the Kerama Islands. (The other three are Tokashiki Island, Aka Island, and Keiruma Island)
It takes about an hour by speedboat from Naha to reach Zamami Island. Make a reservation for a kayak and sup tour that afternoon and a snorkeling trip the next day.
While waiting for the canoe trip, rent a motorbike in the village and drive around the island to see once again how the Kerama Islands’ beaches are God’s most precious gift; the sea water is super blue and beautiful, and the transparency is off the charts!
Canoeing was my first experience. Since I couldn’t swim, I was afraid of falling into the deep sea water. Even though I was wearing a life jacket, I couldn’t relax. My sense of balance was relatively reduced, and the canoe capsized many times on my back. Although I was completely exhausted from the fall, I think it was an unforgettable memory.
Fortunately, the weather was calm that day, allowing me a smooth trip to and from the uninhabited island. In my spare time, I also paddled in a rubber raft, and a simpler one was more suitable for me.
