My wonderful time in Arles - Discover the gorgeous heart of Provence
#2024Travel Review
As I stepped off the train, the warm Provençal sunshine immediately enveloped me, washing away the stress of daily life. This historic town on the banks of the Rhone River is about to become the stage for my unforgettable adventure.
My first stop was the famous Roman Arena, a magnificent relic that showcases Arles' glorious past. Standing in the center of the arena, I could almost hear the thunderous cheers of the audience and imagine the scenes of those mighty gladiators fighting here. The exquisite stone carvings and weathered arches tell of a bygone era, making me feel like I have traveled to the center of the Roman Empire in Gaul during its heyday.
Walking along the winding streets, I was attracted by this town that blends the ancient and the modern. The cute little cafes are packed with outdoor seats, with snow-white tablecloths and full baskets of fresh bread on the tables. The air is filled with the aroma of roasted coffee, and the laughter of locals eager to share stories and food.
One afternoon, I stumbled upon the bustling Arles market, a symphony of colors and sounds that captured the spirit of Provence. Stalls were filled with gleaming produce, from bright-colored tomatoes and fragrant lavender to plump figs and juicy melons. I couldn’t resist the temptation of local delicacies, tucking into the rich, smooth Roquefort cheese and chugging cold rosé wine.
But Arles is not only a feast for the senses, but also for the soul. As I strolled along the peaceful banks of the Rhône, I stumbled upon Aliscamps, an ancient cemetery that has long captured the imagination of artists and writers. The weathered coffins and the breeze blowing through the cypress trees left a lingering impression on my mind.
It was at this moment that I understood why this place has attracted so many people, including the legendary Van Gogh. The artist’s vivid brushstrokes have forever imprinted the charming natural beauty of this town, from the rolling sunflower fields to the moving light and shadows on the Rhône River. I followed his footsteps, seeking out the places that inspired his work.
One of the most fascinating discoveries was Café Van Gogh, a cozy little shop that was once a favorite hangout for artists. Sitting there sipping coffee, I could see him hunched over his canvas, his eyes sparkling with admiration for the world around him. Entire walls were covered with reproductions of his paintings, each a testament to the transformative power of art.
But Arles is not only a haven for artists, it is also a place of natural beauty. I ventured outside the city to explore the vast Camargue region, a thriving wetland teeming with life. I was struck by the iconic Camargue horses, whose flowing manes and sturdy physiques reflect the resilience of this rugged landscape.
As I crossed the marshland, I was greeted by a dazzling array of colors - the startling pink of flamingos, the sky-blue of lavender fields, the shimmering gold of sunflowers. The harmonious rhythm of the ebb and flow of the tide, and the melodious calls of the birds, brought a sense of tranquility and wonder.
As I reluctantly said goodbye to Arles, I knew that this pleasant journey had left a deep impression in my heart. The rich history, charming art and magnificent nature of this town weaved into an unforgettable memory. Arles not only captured my imagination, but also lit a fire in my heart, reminding me how the power of travel can transform and inspire people.
As I boarded the train, I couldn't help but smile, and I was already looking forward to the day when I can return to this charming place of Provence to explore more of its endless beauty and moving style.
