Kanazawa 21st Century Museum: Must-Visit Spots and Reservation Guide
Compared to the Suzuki Daisetsu Museum and the Ishikawa Prefectural Library that I previously introduced, the Kanazawa 21st Century Museum is much more famous. Designed by two renowned Japanese architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the museum adopts the concept of a 'town square,' combining art with a park to bring art closer to the general public. The oval-shaped glass curtain wall and irregular entrances allow people to appreciate the artworks from various angles.
~Tips: Make sure to reserve 'The Swimming Pool' in advance~
Among the award-winning architecture that won the 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most famous piece is undoubtedly 'The Swimming Pool' by Leandro Erlich. While you can buy tickets on the spot to visit the museum, 'The Swimming Pool' can be reserved in advance or visited as a walk-in. If you arrive and find out you can't visit or have to wait in a long line, you'll regret it.

this time at 1-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan 920-8509!
beautiful place with full glass museum that can be seen from the outside. it is free for most exhibition except for those that are created by Leandro Erlich.
The famous swimming pool is one of them( which is not free) it’s an optic illusion of someone standing on top and another group of ppl across the glass below (the pool). quite artsy if you like such modern art exhibits.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
Address: 1 Chome-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-8509, Japan
Getting there: Take a bus to Hirosaka bus stop, from there it is just a few steps to the museum.
Highlights: The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums.
What I like the most of this museum is its unique architecture. The museum is comprised of a circular building, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction. 😆
Opening hours: 9am to 10pm daily, closed on Monday.
Admission fee: 1200yen

The Sense of Wabi-Sabi in Japan (Wabi-Sabi)
Wabi-Sabi in Japan is one of the core concepts in traditional Japanese aesthetics. It embodies an appreciation and respect for the imperfect, the impermanent, and the incomplete. The sense of Wabi-Sabi can be a profound experience during travel, especially in ancient capitals like Kyoto and Nara, as well as in various traditional arts and crafts.
Travel Summary
Exploring the Beauty of Wabi-Sabi
During this trip to Japan, I deeply experienced the tranquility and profundity of Wabi-Sabi. From the ancient temples of Kyoto to the deer park in Nara, every place exuded a timeless beauty. In Kyoto, I visited the rock garden of Ryoanji Temple, where the serenity and simplicity purified my soul. The arrangement of stones and gravel seemed to tell an ancient story, inviting contemplation.
Wabi-Sabi in Traditional Crafts
At the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, I saw architectural works by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, which showcased a modern interpretation of Wabi-Sabi through minimalist lines and open spaces. In many small shops in Kyoto, I was captivated by handmade ceramics and lacquerware, where every imperfection reflected the spirit of craftsmanship.
Literature and Wabi-Sabi
Japanese writers like Junichiro Tanizaki mentioned the concept of Wabi-Sabi in his work 'In Praise of Shadows,' where he believed that beauty exists in the shadows and the interplay of light and dark created by objects. Haiku poet Matsuo Basho's works often convey a deep understanding of nature and the passage of time, embodying the aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi.
Wabi-Sabi and Modern Life
In the fast-paced modern life, the sense of Wabi-Sabi reminds us to slow down and appreciate the simple and genuine beauty around us. Whether it's a cup of tea or a bouquet of flowers, they can become mediums for us to experience Wabi-Sabi.

【Japan Shoryudo】Fourth stop: Kanazawa
🏞️Kanazawa is famous for its production of gold leaf, with 99% of Japan's gold leaf being produced in Kanazawa City. The traditional technique that allows gold leaf to be thinly extended to one ten-thousandth of a millimeter has become a representative craft of Kanazawa, renowned both near and far.
🇯🇵🚇Transportation in Kanazawa
Our previous stop was Takayama, from where you can take a 🚌bus or a train🚊 to Kanazawa. If you buy bus tickets🎫 too late and they are sold out, you have to choose the train, which is not direct and requires a transfer in Toyama. Actually, it's more convenient to travel from Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa. Therefore, when you arrive at a place, make sure to buy your tickets🎫 in advance.
🏠Accommodation
In Kanazawa, we stayed for three days and two nights, choosing to stay at a chain hotel, Mitsui Garden Hotel, which has a large public bath♨️ and a laundry room🧺. The hotel is over 1 kilometer from the JR station, and a taxi costs 1800 yen. Although it's a bit far from the station, it's very close to all the major attractions, all within walking distance🥾, which is very convenient. However, I do not recommend the hotel's 🍽️restaurant, as it's more expensive than outside and not very cost-effective.
☝️Kanazawa's 🍽️Cuisine and 🛝Touring Route
🈯️Day One
Arrive in Kanazawa at noon, get the room, and immediately head to the Omi-cho Market to solve the food issue🍽️, about 200 meters from the hotel. The seafood at Omi-cho Market is plentiful and not expensive, with a rhythm that allows you to eat as you walk. 🦀Matsuba crab is a specialty, and you can buy live ones to be processed, which are fresh and sweet. 🍣🐟Fatty tuna, 🍥scallops, oysters🦪, 🦀crab, 🍤🦐shrimp, and various other seafood products are dazzling. The first day is spent indulging in great food and drink.
🈯️Day Two
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art ⏭️Kanazawa Castle Park⏭️Kenrokuen Garden⏭️Myoryuji Temple⏭️Oyama Shrine⛩️
🌃The swimming pool at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a popular spot for photos, but other artworks are incomprehensible.
🏞️Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrokuen Garden are together; you can reach Kenrokuen Garden by walking through the park. Kenrokuen Garden is one of the three great gardens of Japan, but it's quite crowded. You can try gold leaf ice cream🍦🍧🍨.
🛕Myoryuji Temple, built in 1643, is also known as the 🥷Ninja Temple due to its many traps and mechanisms. Photography🎦 is forbidden, and the interior is complex, appearing to have four stories from the outside but actually has seven. It's said that a well inside serves as a secret passage to Kanazawa Castle. You must call in advance to make a reservation, and they can speak English or Japanese. The cost is 1200 yen per person. Preschool children👧🧒👦👶 are not admitted. There is a Japanese guide, but you will be given a Chinese guidebook, which is recommended. If you don't know how to make a reservation, you can ask the hotel front desk staff for help.
⛩️Oyama Shrine has a bit of a mixed Eastern and Western feel.
🈯️Day Three
🚦Higashi Chaya District
There are three Chaya districts: Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya District, and Kazuemachi Chaya District. Inside, there are many places to enjoy tea, shops, and you can buy local specialty souvenirs, many of which are regionally limited.

Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, is a museum with a circular building design, featuring walls entirely made of glass. Inside, there are contemporary art exhibitions by various artists, including experimental contemporary art, available for viewing both permanently and on a rotating basis. Some parts of the exhibitions can be accessed for free.
Artworks such as Wrapping (LAR Fernando ROMERO), The Man Who Measures the Clouds (Jan FABRE), Colour activity house (Olafur ELIASSON) are on display, and there are also cool design shops and souvenir stores where you can buy gifts.

This museum is great fun with quirky, varied and thought provoking exhibits. It is totally contemporary so don't be looking for a permanent collection of Monet's lily pads out back. A lot of interactive pieces and video installations so I would recommend this for family visits. The architecture of building inside and out is something to behold ! Stunning.
In 2024, I want to come back here ☺️
Anything travels
What are the best places to take in addition to the swimming pool in the 21st Century Museum of Art in Kanazawa? There is a super-fast cafeteria in the
Kanazawa Art Museum, as long as one hundred yuan! No mistakes, these rich appetizers (drinking) + a Western-style staple food + dessert drinks, and the environment is so elegant, in the art gallery, the appetizer is not the vegetable salad, this kind of species, seafood! Thick soup! Grilled meat! With this level of consumption, I feel that people around here are the best choice for lunch.
In addition to the net red swimming pool, the "grape" on the lawn is very suitable for taking many people's photos. You can use the mirror to play various creative poses.

Punch Kanazawa 21st Century Art Museum, the most popular location ~ Argentina designer leandro Erlich designed (pool) can fly a variety of flying ~
Tandy.
Its architectural design is one of the characteristics of the museum. The exterior wall of the building is a 360° glass curtain wall, which blurs the sense of the boundary between the interior and the exterior. One of the most popular areas of the museum is the Swimming Pool by Argentine installation artist Lindro Erish. This exhibit is an ordinary swimming pool at first glance. Look carefully, the pool has only 50 cm of surface, visitors can stand Underwater, the light and shadow changes are experienced at different angles. It is snowing on the day, and the entire venue is cleaning up the snow, so the bottom viewing area is not open, and it is slightly regrettable.
ColdAir.
The 21st Century Museum of Art in Kanazawa was officially unveiled in October 2004. Glass was used as the outer wall of the circular building to form a transparent circular art gallery. At night, the crystal light shines through the ancient times. In downtown Kanazawa, it is like a luminous flying saucer that descends from the stars. There is no heavy and oppressive Japanese art museum. The museum has one of the most special artworks - Figures 7 and 8 look like a swimming pool? In fact, these photos are not taken under the water, but are shot under the special "under the water". The artist uses a 50 cm thick "water layer" to separate the pool up and down, and visitors can find different perspectives from the pool or "underwater". Is the wave and water shadow ~ very dreamy? z
imissqingqing.
To say that the place where Kanazawa must punch the card, it must be the 21st Century Art Museum of Kanazawa. The 3 or 4 points we went to were still full of people, and even the cars could not stop.
The appearance of the entire museum is very tall, the interior is pure white cold wind, no wonder it is the net red card punch.
didn't do your homework. In fact, convenience stores also sell tickets. You can buy them in advance. We had a full 20 minutes to buy the ticket. At first we didnt quite understand how he sold the ticket. Later, I found out that if I want to see the pool, I only need to buy a ticket for the area of 1,000 yen. I can see some exhibition areas, if I want Look at the special exhibition to buy a joint ticket.
The internal exhibition area is forbidden to take pictures. We will go directly to the waterless swimming pool from the left-hand channel of Hall 6, and we will have to queue, but everyone will follow the rules, and the two will flash, we I was too embarrassed to shoot too much. I took two floating photos.
The test shot is a few times: the dress that wears a little fairy will jump up in the pool, and the skirt with the bare shoulders and legs is best. In addition, it is necessary to pick the weather when it is good. The noon is the most ideal (although there are a lot of people). At 3 or 4 o'clock, the sun has not been able to reach the pool. The effect is very discounted, or you have to have that kind of sparkling It feels more real.
The museum is very big. If you visit it carefully, you can take a day. We are still too busy. I hope that I can find many different places next time.
Transportation: JR Jinan Station and Liuyuankou (East Exit) No. 3 and No. 6 platform buses take a 10-minute bus ride and get off at the "21st Century Art Museum"
