🇰🇷 Hike with me to Imjingak Park
#hikingtrails #100WaysOfTravel
Come hike with me to Imjingak Park and come to this wonderful city in Gyeonggi province. It is the last places of interests destination before entering DMZ. This park is created to commemorate the history and culture of both North and South Korea. This area is huge and only a small area has been dedicated to host all the monuments so if you want to skip this memorial park in your hiking trail is ok too. Many locals and tourists will alight here to visit these monuments and you always can see them resting inside the sheltered area and enjoying the elevated views.

🇰🇷 Hike with me to Paju Train station
#hikingtrails #100WaysOfTravel
Come hike with me to Paju Train station and come to this wonderful city in Gyeonggi province. This station has been replicated as part of the monuments and has become a hiking and visiting destination within the park of Imjingak Park. Visitors can enter here and hike up the area or use transport and park at the nearest car park. This is the gateway to DMZ if you are part of the day tour. It is a great hiking trail as you can visit and explore the monuments along the way and there are plenty of rest stop facilities. Do check the weather and air quality before setting out.

🇰🇷 Hike with me to Mangbaedan Monument
#hikingtrails #100WaysOfTravel
Come hike with me to Imjingak Park and come to this Mangbaedan Altar. It is a nice hiking trail and also ok for driving. It is easier to drive and park then continue to hike over. If not it is going to be tough with the incline slope. This is an altar monument just right before the DMZ zone. So you need to have a permit to enter and a travel agency can do this admin work to enter DMZ. It is also a significant place for North and South Koreans to come here to pay their respects. As for the tourists, we can also treat it as a hiking and sightseeing at this special location.

🇰🇷 Let’s go hiking to Gamaksan Suspension Bridge
#outdooradventures #100WaysOfTravel
This place at Gamaksan Suspension Bridge is always an optional activity for those who are going to DMZ for day tour. I will recommend you to select this as it is a super easy hike for low to moderate fitness level. The view here from the suspension bridge is awesome and you do not really have to cross the entire bridge. The bridge is suspended on both of the cliffs, with an high elevation from the mountains below. There are no signs on the maximum weight load in English but you definitely can feel the bridge is shaking especially when there are more people on the bridge. Bring your sunscreen and enjoy this easy hike to Gamaksan Suspension Bridge.

🇰🇷 Gamaksan Entrance is a photo spot
#photolocation #100WaysOfTravel
This is the most popular place to take photo at Gamaksan because all the tour buses and cars will have to drive through here. This area has been beautified so beautifully and you have many non-hikers coming here to enjoy the scenic views. There are also convenience stores and bistro too so you can enjoy a cup of coffee while resting here. On clear days, you can see Gamaksan clearly from below. There are also many cherry blossoms trees here when you come in spring. If you have a chance for a day trip, remember to include Gamaksan Suspension Bridge into your itinerary.

🇰🇷 Gamaksan Viewing Observatory Forest Trail
#outdooradventures #100WaysOfTravel
The best time to visit Gamaksan is during spring and autumn when you can enjoy nice weather and sweat lesser. Get your hiking gear ready with good pair of shoes and you are ready to continue the hike on Gamaksan. The forest trail route is marked clearly and stairs are also built here. There are some steep slopes and if you have a hiking pole then you can also use it to assist you. Many hikers who hike up to Gamaksan will continue hiking towards the Viewing Observatory. There is a shelter area and you can take a break here and enjoy panoramic views of Gamaksan.

Gamaksan suspension bridge
🚌 2/3 hours from seoul by subway and bus.
⛰️ Hiking day-trip from seoul where you can reach after a few hundreds steps, a suspension bridge. you will get to see Ungye waterfall and a temple after a little more hiking.
💡 highlight of the day was the temple. the view from there was amazing and the statues all around it were so beautiful that we actually stopped there way longer than initially planned. we loved the 12 tall Chinese zodiac signs statues set on top of a cliff that allowed us to enjoy the view on the statues and on the suspension bridge.

DMZ, trapped between north & south 🇰🇷🇰🇵
The demilitarized zone is a must see if you’re doing a few days in Seoul, it’s a fascinating glimpse at the line that separates two nations still at war. The war ended in in 1953 with an armistice, so the nations are still technically at war.
The guided tours are amazing given the fact you are approaching such a sensitive area, they give you access to some fascinating sites while still keeping you safe and informed. On the tours you can visit various monuments and memorials to the fallen, the separated and the disappeared - each with their own fascinating stories. You can see the various bridges in their different states of repair that once linked the two nations.
You visit the observatory which enables you to look at North Korea through binoculars and see the difference in their buildings, farming and transport. On a clear day you can see as far as North Korea’s third biggest city. You can also see people on the other side of their border going about their day, walking around or farming and you can see how basic their equipment and provisions are.
Finally you enter the tunnels that North Korea built after the armistice to try and prepare for an invasion of Seoul, the tunnels were found and stopped by the South but still a fascinating piece of the story. You go deep underground and see the dynamite holes left from construction and the coal dust the North Koreans used to try and disguise their true intent.
Overall a fascinating experience and it’s worth the price, and being a 40 minute drive out of Seoul this 3/4 hour trip is doable in a half day if well planned!

Desire for reuniting
Easy access by subway or bus. Bus 2200 or 7300 from Hapjeong station will get you there. After you get off you can walk about 40 minutes to the entrance of the area, then you’ll have to walk up the mountain to get to the building entrance. Or take a city bus then walk or take a shuttle bus next to Tongildongsan bus stop. The shuttle runs from noon to 1540 according to the brochure at 30 minutes increments.
This place shared with the visitors the ideals of reuniting the two Koreas. There are 4 floors. B1 is a children interactive learning center. The first floor shares different statistics and facts, virtual views, and an exhibit. The second floor is the permanent exhibit with pictures of people wanting to reunite with families and letters to there hometown. There’s a cafe on the fourth floor. On the third and fourth floor there are binoculars to observe and look at the border across.
I think you could feel the people’s desire to reconnect with their families. The sadness this division has caused and yet curious about how it looks across the water way.

Mailbox @ Imjingak DMZ South Korea
#seoul
When on my DMZ tour in Seoul, I came across these mailboxes at Imjingak Park.
Interestingly, there were free postcards affixed with South Korean stamps, and there was also a table with DMZ ink chops for visitors to stamp their postcards as well.
Apparently, if anyone mails these postcards in the red mailbox, they will be delivered to your receiver in a year from date sent.. includes even international delivery. It really makes for an interesting souvenir.
Do give this a try if you are visiting Imjingak!
My rating: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!
“I wanna run” Train @ Imjingak DMZ
#seoul
During my DMZ tour at Imjingak Park, I got to see the Steam Locomotive at Jungdan Station, which is famously known as “I wanna run” train.
This battle-scarred steam engine was a sombre looking exhibit in the park, a tragic reminder of the Korean War, and separation between South Korea and North Korea. This engine was a part of a train that was used to transport military supplies during the Korean War. Allies forces blew up this train when it was under threat of being used by the other side.
My rating of this attraction: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!
The Freedom Bridge @ Imjingak South Korea
#seoul
At Imjingak, as part of my DMZ tour, I got to visit the Freedom Bridge which was just fully restored. The Freedom Bridge was originally a temporary wooden bridge built across the Imjingang River to bring home thousands of South Korean POWs. The bridge was later removed and placed in its current location in Imjingak, where it now stands today.
This is definitely one of the historical spots not to be missed when visiting the DMZ.
My rating of this attraction: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!
Imjingak DMZ South Korea
#seoul
As the first stop of my DMZ tour in South Korea, I visited Imjingak which is a prominent area not to be missed about just 7km from the actual DMZ.
Imjingak is famous as the place where Koreans separated from their families in North Korea visit to perform ancestral rites by bowing toward their hometowns every New Year’s Day and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). Hence shrine monuments have also been built here for this very purpose at Imjingak.
My rating of this attraction: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!

❗️It can be crowded, but we recommend visiting during the weekdays when it opens at 10:30 AM.
