The history of Son La Prison was built in 1908 by French colonialists with an initial area of 500 m2.
The prison was built very solidly.
The walls were made of stone and brick, the roof was covered with tin, and there was no ceiling.
The prisoners' beds were also made of stone, with a cemented surface and glued on the outer edges.

Each cell had a floating toilet that was higher than the floor, had no lid, did not flush, and was not cleaned regularly.
This design caused the northwest Lao wind to bring scorching heat in summer and bone-chilling cold with frost in winter, plus the polluted environment of Vietnam caused each cell to develop diseases that spread very quickly.
In 1930, the Communist Party of Vietnam was born, rousing the people to rise up to fight against the brutal regime of feudalism. The struggle movement tried every possible way to suppress and persecute Vietnamese patriots to surprise the enemy and crush the revolutionary movement.
