Game of Thrones filming location! Ait Ben Haddou travel guide
Departing from Marrakech, a 3.5-hour self-drive will take you to a must-visit spot on the loop, the Game of Thrones filming location Ait Ben Haddou!
The village is very small, if you are in a hurry like us, you can stay directly in the village. If you want to stay in a better place, you can go to Ouarzazate first, and then drive back 30km to Ait Ben Haddou village.
You can walk directly to the castle from the main road of the village. As the filming location of 'Game of Thrones', 'The Mummy', and 'Gladiator', it is also very popular among photography enthusiasts, and it's a great place for taking photos!
💡The castle is free of charge🆓, but there is an old man who charges for the nearest shortcut. (Probably because it passes by his house?) Most tourists and group tours go up from the right side of the main road, cross the nearly dry creek, and follow the sign with the large 'Entrance' to the main gate of the castle!
The entire castle is surrounded by red brick walls, with scenery all the way, and various local souvenir shops and handicrafts. You can overlook the entire village from the highest point~ Especially the stairs in front of the highest point of the castle, it's a great place for taking photos!📸
When you come down, you can rest in a local tea house and have a cup of Moroccan mint tea🍃. The terrace view of the tea house we went to was superb! Taking photos gives a sense of Aladdin's magic lamp, full of exotic charm, and the boss is very enthusiastic~☀️
Finally, cross the bridge back to the village, taking photos of the castle from the bridge is also a beautiful spot!🕶
🏨Accommodation
We stayed at the very popular Guest House Bagdad Café in the village, there is a parking space at the door🅿️, and it's very convenient to go to the castle!
Tasty food from Morocco
Traditional Moroccan food is a rich tapestry of flavors, spices, and cultural influences. Staples include couscous, often served with vegetables and meat, and tagine, a slow-cooked stew made with various ingredients such as chicken, lamb, and an array of spices like cumin, coriander, and saffron. Meals are often accompanied by warm bread and olives. Spicy harira soup is popular during Ramadan, while pastilla, a savory-sweet pie filled with pigeon or chicken, showcases the blend of flavors characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. Mint tea is a cherished beverage, served as a symbol of hospitality and enjoyed throughout the day, enhancing the dining experience. #travel #nature #holiday #food #morocco
Creative and imaginative artwork of Morocco
Morocco's creative artwork and craftsmanship are renowned for their vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and traditional techniques passed down through generations. Handwoven Berber rugs, with geometric motifs and bold designs, are among the most iconic pieces, often reflecting the weaver's personal stories or symbols of protection. Ceramics, leather goods, and metalwork are also highly prized, featuring detailed craftsmanship, such as brass lanterns and finely tooled leather bags. Souks across Morocco offer a treasure trove of handcrafted souvenirs, including zellige tile mosaics, tagine pots, and jewelry, each piece a unique representation of the country’s rich artistic heritage. #morocco #holiday #history #travel #art
Ancient iconic village of Morocco
The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou is a stunning, UNESCO-listed ancient fortified village located along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Made of clay and mud brick, the ksar features towering kasbahs and houses clustered within defensive walls, reflecting traditional Berber architecture. Its distinct red-earth structures blend harmoniously with the desert landscape, and the site is a prime example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. Famous as a backdrop for many films, Ait-Ben-Haddou offers visitors a glimpse into Morocco’s history, with its maze-like alleys, terraced homes, and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.#travel #Culture #history #holiday #morocco
