Exploring the Waterfalls of Rastoke
#springitinerary
We had a lovely visit to Rastoke, a small town in Croatia’s karst region. The town is famous for its beautiful waterfalls formed by the Slunjčica River, a tributary of the Korana. These waterfalls are created by tufa barriers, a natural result of years of limestone sedimentation. As we walked along the streams, we marveled at the way the water flows through the town, past old mills and stone buildings. It’s a peaceful and scenic place, perfect for a relaxing stop while exploring the area.

We visited the charming town of Rastoke, nestled in Croatia’s karst region, where nature and geology come together beautifully. The stunning waterfalls here are formed by the Slunjčica River, a tributary of the Korana, and flow through a landscape shaped by tufa barriers—natural formations created over time by limestone sedimentation. The result is a magical scene of cascading water weaving through old mills and stone cottages. It’s a peaceful, picturesque stop that showcases the quiet power of nature’s slow, artistic touch.

Rastoke Water Village Hiking

Rastoke, the town where water fairies live. Rastoke is located in the Slun region. Slun is a city in the Karlovac County of Croatia. It is located in the central mountainous region of Croatia. Rastoke, called Little Plitvice,
is where the Korana and Slunicic rivers flowing from Plitvice meet, and the sight of about 23 waterfalls flowing between houses and through houses is spectacular. This place is unique and houses are built on top of waterfalls, and the secret is in the water. Since the water flowing here is limestone, the amount of water flowing varies depending on the season. As the limestone hardened and piled up, stairs were formed, and thanks to the stairs that were created, it became easy to build houses. This town also used the flowing waterfall water to operate laundry and mills. The facilities are protected as cultural heritage. Since it is a small town, you can tour every corner of the town in up to an hour. It is a beautiful town even if you just look at it from outside without going into the town. It is also known as the "City of Cats" because statistically it is the city with the most cats per capita in Croatia.
