The Aberdares are an isolated volcanic range that forms the eastern wall of the rift valley, running roughly 100km north south between Nairobi and Thomsons Falls. The Aberdare National Park was formed in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. While the park has elephant, rhino, black leopard, lion and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope, it is rarely visited by safari companies and individual travelers. Soils are volcanic origin and red. There are two main peaks Kinangop (3,906m) and Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999m) separated by a lengthy saddle of alpine moorland at over 3,000m. The high rainfall turns the roads to mud and you need a 4×4 to get anywhere. The park often closes in the wet season. There are many clear streams and waterfalls. Shaba National Reserve, which lies east of the road linking Isiolo with Marsabit, form a trio of unusual and attractive game sanctuaries very different from others in Kenya. Shaba National Reserve has a particular place in the history of Kenya game conservation for it was in this reserve that the authoress, Joy Adamson, died; her trilogy of books on the rehabilitation of the compliant leopard to a wild environment remained unfinished. Getting There - Masai Mara National Reserve is approximately 5hrs drive from Nairobi. You can drive or take a flight to any of the air strips in the park. Attractions - Masai Mara National Reserve is 1500km². Given the size of the park, you never have to wait to spot interesting wildlife. The wildlife ranges from the secretary bird, vultures, ostriches, lions, cheetahs, leopards to hippopotamuses. The chances of finding a pride of lions hunting or feasting are very high. I was very lucky to have spotted the big 5 of the Mara including the elusive leopard. Vehicles are equipped with radios which the guides use to communicate with other guides to share locations of wildlife and in case of emergency. Hotels - There are several options available. I stayed at Mara Legends Camp. They have tents set up with toilets and showers. The team at the camp is very attentive to guest needs. Food & Restaurants - There is a main restaurant and a bar. At the main restaurant they served western and Indian cuisine during the 3 days I stayed there. Hot air balloon safari in Masai Mara isn't just about mere sightseeing. As you take off, you witness the sky painted in golden light. Getting There - Masai Mara is about a 5hr drive from Lake Nakuru. I stayed at Serenity Mara Legends Camp. It is right next to a lake with a lot of hippopotamuses and they arrange hot air balloon safaris or you can choose to arrange on your own. There is a section of road from Nakuru to Masai Mara with potholes everywhere, and my camera fell off the seat and was sacrificed ▪️Be sure to choose a Jeep! After the rain, there are many muddy roads, so don't choose a mini van. Yesterday our guide helped a mini van stuck in a mud pit to get out ▪️If the car is too old, it is easy to break down and delay time . 3️⃣Reliable guide ▪️Very important!
