Nanxun - a lesser-known ancient town
Out of boredom from being stuck in one city, I chose to explore Zhejiang. Huzhou came up as one possibility, so after looking more in depth into the Town, I found an ancient town there called Nanxun. When I read reviews of Nanxun, I realised there weren’t many as it was mostly overlooked by most people.
Nanxun is about one hour from the Huzhou train station by taxi and cost just under 100RMB, I was glad I had taken a taxi as the driver took me straight to the entrance zone. There is a bus option from the train station which involves some changing and organisation.
Once inside Nanxun, it’s 2 major lanes of old style buildings and authentic local cuisine. Most places are run by local families but there are the more modern cafes located in there too. Inside Nanxun there are a number of museums/residencies to visit and the stone features everywhere make for some great photographs.
You can stay in the ancient town or travel back into the city area, I chose to return to the city after a few hours exploring. So far, Nanxun has been my favourite ancient town.

Nanxun Ancient Town is located in Nanxun District, Huzhou City, at the junction of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. It was a famous silk town in the south of the Yangtze River during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River with abundant human resources and a combination of Chinese and Western architecture.
It was raining when I went to the ancient town of Nanxun. I had a deep experience of the ancient town of Nanxun in the mist and rain in the south of the Yangtze River. There is a mist on the lake. Nanxun should be the most beautiful at this moment. It is recommended that everyone can experience the ancient town of Nanxun in the rain. In addition, Xiaolianzhuang is worth a closer look. It was the local down payment mansion at that time. It was really very big and spectacular.

#water #ancienttowns #chinabeauty This is one of the most beautiful ancient towns I've ever visited. I could feel the vibe of ancient Chinese culture. There were theatre performance as well (free) and musicians performance in a temple (also free). I spend the whole day walking around it with my girlfriend. There are some nice places to eat or have a tea just like in ancient China.

Nanxun ancient town-Zhejiang
Inbetween three cities Hangzhou,Jiaxing and Huzhou is this beautiful ancient town.It is a water town in Huzhou. I really enjoyed and loved this place. It is quite different than other water towns I have been so far. What i enjoyed most was that there were very few tourists in comparison to the more famous towns.I definitely loved the old houses of the local residents, the water canals, the bridges and the boat ride in it. I recommend this one, you won’t be disappointed.
Nanxun Baijian Building: quiet and rainy south of the river
hundred buildings built by the river, row by row. It is hidden in the ancient town of Nanxun in the rich Huzhou area. More than 400 years old
This ancient town of Nanxun has too many attractive places.
But what I like is also the one that has remained unchanged for thousands of years. It is the appearance of the small bridge flowing water thousands of years ago, and greets the day and day rising and falling in a constant posture.
Yanyu Jiangnan, Pillow River Water Township, Nanxun to me, seems to be the best soul to comfort.
One brick and one watt has the infiltration of the ages, and the silent and uninteresting escapes the vicissitudes of a hundred years, and creates a kind of soft poetry.
I don't want to leave. So the car that was started was parked again, and returned home. I found a restaurant on the riverside and tasted some local dishes, which had some chic flavor.
Smile is you, look back, you are not forgetting or you. The crabs are stretched, worn in the ancient town of Vietnam, the Nanxun after the rain, and the south of the autumn is the most suitable air for deliberation. It is also a place suitable for making costumes. They either bow their heads or look back, and they are full of glimpses.
Nanxun Ancient Town: A dreamy return to the ink-washed poetry of the south of the Yangtze River.
Nanxun Ancient Town, a typical water town, has a profound history. Stone paths wind through white walls and black tiles, small bridges over flowing water, and houses, all of which fully demonstrate the tenderness of the south of the Yangtze River. Baijianlou, Xiaolianzhuang, and Zhang Shiming's old house, each historical site tells the story of past prosperity. When night falls, the ancient town becomes more peaceful and tranquil, with lanterns hanging high and lights interlacing, as if stepping into a moving ink painting. Strolling around, people forget the hustle and bustle and indulge in the unique charm of the interweaving of classic and modern, lingering on.
A paradise in Nanxun Ancient Town.
✨I took a trip to Nanxun Ancient Town!
I stayed in a typical Jiangnan courtyard with beautiful scenery. I could also make a fan and take photos.
A night view that fulfills all wishes. The night view is beautiful. Sit down and read a book, very artistic. There are also delicious afternoon tea cakes and a pot of good tea. The atmosphere is full.
✨The most satisfying homestay in Nanxun!
Very comfortable and cozy. The rooms are very clean. The entrance to the ancient town is indescribable. The comfort level is full. The boss is very nice. The things are very complete. Free tea and a restaurant next door. Homemade dishes are really delicious! Drinking until eleven o'clock, the boss still chats with me! Come back next time, woo woo woo
It's a flowing painting - Nanxun Ancient Town.
Nanxun Ancient Town is located in Nanxun District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, at the junction of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, and is one of the six famous towns in the south of the Yangtze River.
The ancient town has a long history. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was a famous silk town in the south of the Yangtze River, known for its rich cultural resources and a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The ancient buildings in the town are well preserved, with small bridges, flowing water, pink walls and black tiles, full of the charm of the southern water town.
Visitors can stroll on the stone road, visit historical sites such as Zhang Shiming's former residence and Liu's ladder, and feel the tranquility and elegance of the ancient town.
In addition, Nanxun Ancient Town is also a paradise for food. Visitors can taste local specialties such as double-cross noodles and Xun's hooves.
Leisure, joy, joy, happiness... "Nanxun Ancient Town, hard to find in the world", it is a flowing painting, people are playing in the painting!
Nanxun Ancient Town has waived the entrance fee, making it more authentic than Wuzhen|On the road by car
👍️Recommendation:
Compared to the commercialized and uniformly managed Wuzhen, and the half-hidden Xitang at night, I prefer Nanxun. Because it is more authentic.
Although its ancient houses do not seem as numerous as those in Wuzhen, you can clearly feel that the existing ancient houses are not those that have been refurbished to look old.
I like the more delicate charm of Nanxun; it can convey a sense of tranquility through time.
📅Travel Guide:
The main entrance fee has been waived, but small attractions like Xiaolian Manor still require separate tickets.
This has an advantage, as you can choose to enter or not based on your preferences and time. Of course, I still recommend everyone to visit the ancient town to experience a slow-paced life, so don't be too strict with your schedule.
🏨Accommodation Guide:
I stayed at the Huajiantang within the scenic area, and they even upgraded my room to one in an ancient house for free. It was fantastic and very convenient for going out.
💗Other tips:
You can park your car in the parking lot.
Nanxun | The misty and rainy Jiangnan is not hard to find
Nanxun Ancient Town is truly beautiful.
Nanxun Ancient Town is a picturesque tourist destination with a long history.
The well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings and stone-paved streets make you feel like you've traveled back in time.
Taking a ride on a black-awning boat, you can wander among the small bridges and flowing waters, experiencing the unique charm of the Jiangnan water town.
The famous residences and traditional crafts displayed in the town add to its cultural richness. Whether it's the food, scenery, or cultural history, Nanxun Ancient Town is captivating and offers an unforgettable travel experience.
The charming ancient town, Nanxun, is not hard to find
Nanxun Ancient Town, one of the most poetic ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, covers a large area and has a concentrated array of attractions. Those who appreciate the beauty of the south, small bridges over flowing water, and ancient architecture and gardens should definitely come and take a look.
This time, I took the elderly on a trip, and a three-day itinerary was relatively relaxing. On the first day, we took the train to Huzhou Station and checked into the Giant Junlan Resort Hotel near the ancient town, which is just over 300 meters away from the town in a straight line, making it extremely convenient. After a short rest, you can start exploring. First, head to the Parent-Child Wharf, turn right and keep walking to reach Baijianlou, a quaint residential building constructed along the water. It unfolds like a Jiangnan market scroll painting, with green waves, weeping willows, and river breezes. Strolling and stopping to look around is quite enjoyable; when tired, you can also drink tea by the river or have dinner directly, shedding the fatigue of the week and sharing a wonderful weekend time with family.
The lights along the river light up after sunset, and at this time, you can appreciate the beautiful riverside night scene, with flowing lights and shadows, dreamlike and fantastical. There are also many people taking night tours, with lots of ladies in Hanfu and ethnic costumes taking photos on the bridge, as if traveling through time. On the second day, you can buy a pass for the attractions and play along the river one by one. Xiaolianzhuang (Liu Yong's private garden), Jiaye Hall Library, Liu's Ladder Shop, Zhang's Old Residence, Yiyuan, and so on. Take your time to walk and look around, and a day's time is completely enough. For lunch, eat a local specialty, Shuangjiao noodles, in the ancient town's restaurant, which is also very affordable.
The third day marks the end of the weekend, and the number of people in the scenic area drops sharply. The riverside boats no longer have long queues, and it is very pleasant to take a boat tour again at this time. From the Cross Wharf to the Silk Wharf and back, take the time to appreciate the riverside scenery one more time before preparing to head home~
The land of fish and rice, the home of silk
Nanxun Ancient Town is the birthplace of lake silk, renowned both domestically and internationally. The business guild halls here provide a detailed introduction to the entire process of silk production, from sericulture to the finished product. The town has a strong tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education, advocating for good family values and supporting educational endeavors even when wealthy. Huzhou brushes are also very famous, and at the entrance of one shop, there are two huge writing brushes, which are probably the largest in China.
There is a river running through the ancient town, with black-awning boats constantly passing by. The banks are paved with bluestone slabs, and the streets are lined with shops, large mansions of famous and wealthy families, and there is also a Taoist temple called Guanghui Palace, with its yellow walls and gray tiles, majestic in appearance. The ancient town is free to enter.

Ink and Wash Ancient Town - Nanxun (Great place for May Day!)
Ink and Wash Ancient Town - Nanxun (Great place for May Day!)|||The super beautiful Ink and Wash Ancient Town Nanxun~ National style is yyds! Let the pictures do the talking!!!! 🇨🇳
💫Travel Tips💫
There are many costume shops in the town, it's worth looking around and comparing, quite competitive, and the prices are reasonable and not expensive~🌟
There are two must-visit streets in Nanxun Ancient Town, one is the street for local snacks, delicacies, and souvenirs; the other is the ink and wash scenery street, which is less commercialized and mostly consists of riverside farmhouse dishes, with beautiful scenery (for the specific entrance to the scenic street, check the picture I posted in the comments~)✨
The ancient town is quite large~ Set off in the morning, and you can almost finish touring by evening or night, the night view is also particularly beautiful! Don't miss it~ It was overcast when I went, but it had a charm of its own~ Black and white like an ink wash landscape painting, so poetic!🌌
💫Food Tips💫
Specialty: Nanxun Three Teas, enjoy tea by the lake and take in the scenery~ Comfortable💕
Alley Mouth Stinky Tofu: Recommend Nanxun's specialty stinky tofu, ten yuan a serving, made by the owner aunt herself through fermentation - no technology! Fried until crispy on the outside, especially tender inside, delicious! Location is in the picture, if you can't find it, look for a large Ancient Tea shop, then keep heading south! Once you reach the alley, keep going inside, it's the one at the very end!💖
Yu Shi Shan Lian Spicy Oil Wontons: The wontons are very fresh, both the oil residue fresh meat and the embroidered brocade fresh meat large wontons have local characteristics, the oil residue is fragrant, and the embroidered brocade vegetables are rich in flavor (wild vegetable lovers, go for it!), and the intangible heritage spicy oil small wontons are also delicious! Be sure to add more spicy oil when eating~ The spicy oil is not spicy at all, but very fragrant~💓
Craftsmanship Workshop Rice Cake: There are many rice cake shops in the ancient town, I tried them all and this one is the best! I love their black rice wheat fragrant cake (yellow wheat fragrant filling), yogurt purple rice cake (yogurt purple rice filling), and mini Ding Sheng cake (red bean rose filling) too! They are the best when eaten fresh! I immediately mailed a few boxes to my friends far away in Nanjing after eating!💞
San Jiao Noodles: These noodles are also a local specialty, I was too full to eat more, but local friends recommended the Zhuangyuan Building and Longfeng Noodle House, if you still have room in your stomach, you can try them! Let me know which one is better, I'll go again next time!💗

During the Qingming holiday, I checked in at the thousand-year-old ancient town of Nanxun in the south
The sunlight filtered through the ancient eaves, casting mottled shadows on the bluestone paths that seemed to dance and tell the thousand-year story of Nanxun. Today, I stepped into this place brimming with historical charm, ready to embark on a unique cultural journey.
As soon as I entered the ancient town, I was captivated by its rustic charm. The shops along the street sold a variety of handicrafts and specialty snacks, which were dazzling. I strolled through the narrow alleys, with ancient buildings standing quietly on both sides, as if narrating their past glory.
I arrived at the core area of the ancient town, where the most representative attractions of Nanxun are gathered. The first thing that caught my eye was a simple temple, with incense burning vigorously inside and a constant stream of visitors. I walked into the temple and felt a solemn and mysterious atmosphere, as if I could touch the pulse of history.
Next, I came to the iconic building of the ancient town—a stone bridge. Despite being weathered by wind and rain, the bridge remained as sturdy as ever. Standing on the bridge, looking at the river and the scenery on both sides, I felt an inexplicable sense of emotion.
In the streets and alleys of the ancient town, I also tasted many authentic delicacies. Nanxun's specialty snacks are diverse, and each bite is memorable. I particularly liked the zongzi from an old-brand shop; the zongzi had a sticky and smooth texture, with rich fillings that were irresistible.
At night, I chose to stay in an inn within the ancient town. The rooms in the inn were decorated in an antique style, filled with the rich atmosphere of the south of the Yangtze River. Lying in bed, listening to the sounds of insects and running water outside the window, I felt the tranquility and serenity of the ancient town.
This trip to Nanxun ancient town was very rewarding. I not only appreciated the beautiful scenery and rich culture of the ancient town but also tasted authentic food and felt the warmth and simplicity of the local people. Nanxun, a place that makes one linger and forget to return, I believe I will come again.
The ancient trail of Chengshan is perfect for leisurely hiking
As the number one town for white tea in Zhejiang, with its ten thousand mu of tea gardens, a sea of green is at its peak beauty for the year. Spring tea picking has begun, and the tea gardens are bustling with activity. The destination's peach orchard is in full bloom, with peach blossoms and rapeseed flowers complementing each other. Ancient temples, tea gardens, peach blossoms, and bamboo seas make for a hiking route rich in elements. To the east lies the over two hundred mu of Taohua (Peach Blossom) Lake, and to the west, the thousand-year-old Chengshan Zen Temple, along with many historical sites such as the Nu Platform, Beacon Towers, and Zouma Ridge, still stand tall within the Peach Blossom Land, recounting the vicissitudes of time.

Taihu Ancient Town
Taihu Ancient Town is not a real ancient town with a long history🏯, but an imitation ancient architectural group developed by Longzhimeng. The commercial atmosphere here is very strong, the prices of restaurants are relatively expensive, but the snacks are still good🌮 (in fact, the snacks are the same in any ancient town). The opening hours of Taihu Ancient Town are from 8:30 in the morning to 22:00 in the evening.
➡️Travel strategy:
💯Don't miss the large-scale song and dance performance 'Drunk Beauty Taihu', this performance lasts 70 minutes, through the past and present, tells the dusty past of the Taihu Lake for thousands of years!
🎆There will be a water dance fireworks show every night, as long as it does not rain, you can enjoy the beautiful fireworks blooming on the water surface.
🎉In the evening, there will be a series of wonderful performances in the streets and alleys of Taihu Ancient Town, such as throwing embroidered balls to recruit sons-in-law, Yue Fei's loyalty to the country, and Peking Opera martial arts fighting on the spot, etc., can be seen everywhere.
·
➡️Surrounding play:
Longzhimeng Animal World
There are currently more than 200 kinds of animals and more than 100,000 animals. You can have eye contact with the beasts in the mountains, race with herbivores, watch brown bears spinning and dancing, touch cute little tigers... If you bring your children to play, they will definitely be very happy, and you can also take a small train🚉 tour.
Nanxun Ancient Town
Compared with Wuzhen and Xitang, Nanxun Ancient Town is more primitive, giving people a more pure feeling. There are small bridges and flowing water, white walls and black tiles, stone bridges, the fun of boating, red lanterns, and the family scenes of washing vegetables and cooking by the river window, all showing the style of Jiangnan.

Xiao Lianzhuang
Xiao Lianzhuang in Nanxun: Located to the west of Wangu Bridge in the southwest of Nanxun Town, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, it is a private garden built by Liu Yong, the richest man in Nanxun in the late Qing Dynasty, commonly known as 'Four Elephants'. It was started in the 11th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1885), and after 40 years of operation by three generations of the Liu family, it was completed by Liu Chenggan, the eldest grandson of Liu Yong, in 1924. Covering an area of 27 acres, it is named Xiao Lianzhuang because of its admiration for the name of the Lotus Villa built by Zhao Mengfu, a great painter from Huzhou at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. The area is 17,399 square meters. Originally a temporary burial garden for the Liu family, it started planting flowers and willows around the pond, replanting lotus flowers, arranging pavilions, and building family temples from the 11th year of Guangxu (1885), and it was completed in 1924. Because of the admiration for the Lotus Villa of Zhao Mengfu, a painter from the Yuan Dynasty, it was named 'Xiao Lianzhuang'.
Everyone knows the story of Zhang Guolao riding a donkey backwards.
Zhang Guolao is the oldest immortal among the eight immortals in ancient Chinese mythology and has a wide influence in Chinese folklore. He is a real historical figure.
A Quiet Location for the Serious Escapist
Escaping Shanghai’s ceaseless bustle can be challenging. The tea fields of Longjin, or the waterways of Suzhou can fill up just as quickly as your local dumpling spot at meal time. 🥟
If you really want some peace and quiet, try Nanxun. being sufficiently off the tourist trail, you’ll find these sleepy antiquated streets, stocked with delightful local bites and a slice of history, just the place you always wanted to be.
Take the train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Jiaxing South station and then take a cab to Nanxun. The journey will take you about 2-3 hours in total, but when you’re there you’ll be rewarded with a little touch of Zen.
Nanxun is a soulful and profound water town with a history of over 1,400 years. It is the richest town in modern Chinese history and totally different to other small, girly water towns: the stone roads, bridges and water ways are wide, and houses are big. The most special feature of it is, that its architecture mixes Chinese and western styles.

There is a small lotus village in Nanxun Ancient Town. It was built in 1885 and is the private garden of Liunan, the richest man in Jiangnan. It is also one of the five famous gardens in Nanxun. It was built in the Qing Dynasty and has been spent for more than 40 years. The area is nearly 20,000 square meters, and in addition to the pavilions, courtyards, Xuanyuan, most of the other are lotus ponds, hence the name. The beauty of Xiaolianzhuang is still touching people even today. I can always see many students coming here to sketch and use their tender brushstrokes to record the soft side of Jiangnan. Jiaye Library is adjacent to Xiaolianzhuang and was built by Liu Weis grandson. Jiaye Library is a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. All wooden windows and railings are hollowed out "Jiaye Library". In the library building, a piece of "Kin Ruo Jia", the Kowloon Golden Jubilee, was mentioned by Pu Yi in the late Qing Dynasty. When the library was at its peak, there were as many as 60,000 volumes of books, a total of about 160,000 books, and many precious books were preserved. After 1949, Jiaye Library Building has become a part of the Zhejiang Library, and continues to shine for the preservation of human wisdom.
Nanxun Ancient Town is located in Nanxun District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, and has a history of more than 700 years. In the old town of Nanxun, the head is a patchwork of horsehead walls, and the bow can be seen crossing the water. Walk through the layers of arches, such as the old times that passed hundreds of years ago.
In all the architectural forms, I especially like the ancient town, perhaps because the first time I went to the ancient town for the first time in my childhood, I was so happy that I left an indelible mark, so after that Every time, whether in a good mood or not, I always want to go to the ancient town, completely slow down, and let go of myself...
said that it is more suitable for the rainy days and the ancient town,
because of a story, so come to Nanxun,
Coincidentally, this time I met a lot of old friends in the ancient town. Its true that fate decides everything.
The six ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River are picturesque, among which the relatively quiet is the ancient town of Nanxun. The ancient town of Nanxun retains many famous houses. The Lius ladder is a special one. This house looks like Jiangnans traditional customs from the outside. There is a difference between reality and imagination. The owner of the
Liu Lai is Liu Anzhen, the third son of Liu Wei, the richest man in Nanzhao in the Qing Dynasty. The main hall of this house is called Chongdetang. Because the owners name is Qi Qing, it is also called Lius nickname. Called the Liu's ladder. The main hall of the
Liu Lai is a typical Jiangnan style. There are various valuable wooden furniture in the hall. The details of these furniture are very fine. On the wall in the middle of the hall is a landscape painting and two pairs of couplets, showing the owner's feelings and family style.
Going inside, Jiangnan style faded, and suddenly found that Western-style architectural art became the main tone. In the late Qing Dynasty, there could be such a house, indicating the prosperity of Jiangnan's overseas trade and the frequent exchange of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. The
Western building is located in the north of the Liu's Ladder. The building has only two floors and the exterior is covered with red bricks. The outsiders usually call it the "red house." The
red house has a unique shape, and the hall also displays a variety of sculptures and precious artifacts. This is a place suitable for taking pictures of people. Many young people come to take pictures of art.
The former residence of Zhang Shiming was built in 1899-1905. The time span spans seven years. This house is also called Suidetang. It sits on the west side of the ancient creek and stands at 4,500 square meters. The pattern is five down, and the Chinese and Western style rooms are 150 together. It is a giant house with good preservation in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the south of the Yangtze River.
After entering the mansion through the ticket gate, it is a Chinese-style courtyard with a strong atmosphere. The middle of the road is the main hall. The plaque of the "Zhede Hall" is hung on the innermost beam of the main hall. The bottom is the couplet. Elegant calligraphy and painting, in front of the fine wood furniture, the hall is on both sides of the Meilanjuzhu and other calligraphy.
The two-in and three-in-one styles of the mansion are still rich, but some of the building materials are imported, such as the two-in-one window with French colored flower glass. The four-in-one is the most western-style courtyard. In addition to the dressing room and the dressing room, there is also a luxurious ballroom, which is definitely a new thing in the Republic of China.
The bricks of the four-in-one Xiaoyang Building are mainly red, and the overall style is calm and wild. The floor tiles and paintings in the building are imported from France. The fireplace, the Collins iron column and the glass engraving perfectly replicate the 18th century European aristocratic style.
Due to its large size and unique shape and exquisite details, Zhang Shimings former residence has always been called the first residential house in Jiangnan.
