An afternoon at the Merville battery🇫🇷
The Merville gun battery is a decommissioned coastal fortification in Normandy France , which was built as part of the Germans Atlantic wall to defend continental Europe from allied invasion .
It was a particularly heavy fortified position and was one of the first places to be attacked by allied forces during the Normandy landings commonly known as D-Day.
A British force under the command of Terrance Otway succeeded in capturing this position suffering heavy casualties. ( the bust of Otway can be seen in one of my pictures) …..
I won’t say too much more about the museum and site but what I will say is for the entrance fee of €8 it has to be one of the best WW2 museums I’ve been too , and I’ve been to quite a few !
The site has several bunkers and a sound and light show which was pretty realistic showing the assault and battle from both the British and German perspective, also a replica C-47 Plane and hangar,
And the usual gift shop , toilets and car park.
The battery museum is open daily-
15th March to 30th September 9:30 am to 6:30pm
(Last admission 6:30pm)
1st October to 15th November 10am to 6:30pm
(Last admission 5:00pm)
Me and my dad had a great time and we spent a few hours there but could of stayed longer as the site has lots to see .
But overall I would highly recommend a visit !!!
