A long drive of more than three and a half hours in the morning, arriving at the seventh stop - Meknes area in the afternoon. First visit Volubilis. Volubilis is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins (Figure 1) and was listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1997. It is an ancient city from the 3rd century BC and the westernmost military stronghold of the Roman Empire. Volubilis was originally settled by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. Under the expansion of the Roman Empire, it became an important city in the westernmost part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD, reaching its peak in the 2nd century, with the construction of many large public buildings, such as the Arch of Triumph (Figure 2), built in 217 AD, which is a landmark building in Volubilis; the public baths (Figure 3) show the luxurious life of the ancient Romans; and the exquisite mosaic floors (Figure 4) show the artistic level of the ancient times. After the third century, Volubilis gradually lost its importance for administrative and military reasons and was finally abandoned in the eighth century. More than a thousand years later, although the magnificent buildings of the past have become ruins in the smoke of the wind, the ancient city, in addition to the above-mentioned, also has the Tangier Gate (Figure 5), the Temple (Figure 6), the Council Hall (Figure 7), the Court (Figure 8), the Reservoir (Figure 9), etc., which are still faintly visible and are important archaeological sites for the study of ancient Roman life in North Africa.

North Africa Morocco Tunisia Tour (10) "Black Imperial City" - Meknes Meknes - Fez December 15, 2024 Sunny to cloudy, 4-18°C. After lunch, we went to Meknes for a visit. Meknes, the ancient capital of the Alaouite dynasty, is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco and the sixth largest city in Morocco. It is located on the northern slope of the Middle Atlas Mountains and was built in the 11th century. It reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries and was once the capital. It is a holy place of Islam and an important industrial and commercial center. The area also preserves many historical sites such as Roman relics. Meknes is called the Black City because the powerful army established by the ruler at that time was composed entirely of black slaves, so it was called the Black Imperial City. The Mansour Gate, which means victory and triumph, is under repair and is not shown in the photo. The legendary emperor Ismail was not only a powerful ruler, but also a prolific father. He had more than 500 wives and concubines of different skin colors, regions, and temperaments, and gave birth to 525 sons and 342 daughters. To this day, no one in the world can match him. The Mausoleum of Ismail is located inside the Mansour Gate (Figure 1), and the carriages used for sightseeing come and go (Figure 2). The mausoleum building, similar to an Islamic mosque, is imposing (Figure 3), and the interior decoration is exquisite and luxurious. The most impressive things are the floor, walls, and dome. Mosaic decorations in various patterns are everywhere, and the colors are bright and dazzling (Figures 4-9). The clothes and crowns of Ismail, his wife, and two daughters are placed in the building. With his death, the entire imperial city fell into ruins and did not prosper until the 20th century. After the visit, we drove for an hour to our eighth stop - Fez.

It was a coincidence that Sultan Moulay Ismail and King Louis XIV of France built a city in the wilderness at the same time. The former was located on a wooded hill about 70 km west of Fes, now known as Meknes, and the latter was the famous Palace of Versailles. From 1680 to 1693, the two dynasties maintained friendly relations. Later, the relationship between the two countries broke down when France refused to return the Moorish prisoners. Moulay Ismail's 54-year reign and extraordinary achievements made him a legendary figure. Early in his reign, he was very fond of Meknes and dreamed of building a city there that would be more magnificent than Fes and Marrakech. Meknes, as described by the Sultan's chronicler, was like this: "…20 strong gates were built on the city walls, with platforms for cannons on top. Inside the city, he built a huge artificial lake where people could row boats. There was a granary in the city, with huge underground reservoirs, and a stable three miles long for the Sultan to house his horses and mules, which could accommodate 12,000 horses. The ground under the arches was used to store grain for feeding the horses… He also built the Palace of Mansour, which had 20 domes, each of which overlooked the plains and mountains surrounding Meknes. Around the stables were all kinds of rare trees, and there were 50 palaces within the city walls, each with its own mosque and bathhouse…." Unfortunately, today's visitors to Meknes can hardly feel the splendor of the past!

Cycle 83 km east from Fez, almost non-stop through olive groves, and you can't imagine how trees can be planted in such barren and dry land! This kind of human spirit gives us endless hope, and we believe that as long as the Moroccans are willing, they are absolutely capable of changing the country! It's just that they haven't done enough yet, and the speed of improving the environment is proportional to the speed of destroying it. The ruins of Volubilis stand on a slightly sunken plain, and some broken shadows in the distance almost make people ignore its existence (Figure 11), just like its historical status. If it were not for the excavation and protection of the former French colonists, it would probably have been in the state of "dust to dust, earth to earth". Volubilis (called the Pharaoh's Castle by the Arabs) is the only large Roman colony discovered in Morocco so far, with a city area of 40 hectares and a total length of 2.6 km of city walls during its heyday. The olive industry was the main reason for the prosperity of the city, and many beautiful large mosaic floors and town houses were built in the 2nd century AD. But in the 17th century, it was almost completely destroyed by Moulay Ismail, the sultan with the Black Guard, who then took the fragments of the city to build his new capital, Meknes. Nevertheless, the site is still magnificent. Moulay Idriss (Figures 19-20) is located northwest of the Roman ruins, built on a semicircular hill, like a big white bun, shining in the sun. Distance creates beauty, and it is appropriate to use it here. When you enter the town, you will find it ugly and dirty. This is the worst place I have ever seen in Morocco: the number of shameless beggars and liars makes people reluctant to stay for another minute!
