Photographer’s Paradise (Jinshanling)

This part of the Great Wall is known as a photographer’s paradise. It is very quiet and the surrounding scenery is spectacular. Located in Hebei Provence, it is about 2.5 hours from Beijing and only partially restored. Jinshanling is one of the best preserved parts of the wall and is a great hike up. Sunset and Dawn at Jinshanling Great Wall in Summer

Jinshanling is probably the best section of the Great Wall around Beijing for families with kids. The scenic area is built like a large park, with gentle and easy-to-walk mountain trails. Apart from the abundance of bees and flying insects, the overall scenic area is clean, tidy, and well-managed. We chose the Jinshanling Great Wall Hotel at the entrance of the scenic area, which is just a three-minute walk to the park, making it very convenient! The hotel’s hygiene is acceptable, the breakfast is quite simple, but the à la carte dishes for lunch and dinner are delicious! The Great Wall scenic area stops entry at 5 PM, so we entered the park at 4 PM. Right at the entrance, there is a cable car that takes you directly to Xiaojinshan Tower. Following the local guide, we climbed the western towers to watch the sunset, which illuminated each tower. We climbed westward all the way to Liuyan Tower, counting a total of 16 towers. Worried that descending the mountain with kids after sunset might be inconvenient, we descended to the foot of the mountain a little after 5 PM. Actually, the descent was quite easy, so next time we can stay to watch the sunset with the kids. In summary, the western section of the Great Wall has very dense towers, with gentle slopes, making it easy for a seven-year-old to climb without any pressure. We saw many elderly hiking enthusiasts along the way, so this section is suitable for all ages. The next morning, we entered the park at 5 AM. Since the cable car was not yet operational, we walked up to Houchuankou and headed east to watch the sunrise. The eastern section of the Great Wall is steeper and restored to its original state, requiring some physical effort and the use of both hands and feet in some places! Due to the rapidly rising temperature and the oppressive heat, we only climbed four towers to the Guanjiao Tower before flying a drone and returning. We plan to come back in the fall for a more serious climb!

Rubbing your eyes? This is Summer Holidays in China but if you want a photo at the greatest monument built in China, with nobody inside but you, then look no further than this! From Beijing, get a driver to pick you up and drive to this great wall at Chengde, Hebei. You could even stay at a hotel here for a night, it is beautiful and restful. Otherwise, you need at least half a day to do this, and reach Beijing at night. There is a cableway to take you all the way up to the wall, and you just need to walk about 10min to reach the first tower to access it. Photos here look great, and the air is fresh and pleasant. Climb a bit and you get to rest in the many towers along the way. Jinshanling Great Wall is a border fortress with unique architectural aesthetics

On the way back to Chengde from Beijing, taking the Daguang Expressway, I was attracted by the majestic Great Wall in the mountains at the Beijing-Hebei border. A quick check on the map showed it was the Jinshanling Great Wall, so I decided to take a look. The Jinshanling Great Wall was built during the Ming Dynasty, initially supervised by Xu Da. Later, in the mid-Ming period, the famous anti-Japanese general Qi Jiguang, while guarding the northern frontier, constructed numerous enemy towers and battle platforms of various shapes. The forms of the towers vary with the mountains, each tower having its own unique style. The tower bases are square, round, or flat, and the tower tops are shaped like boat canopies, domes, four-cornered, or eight-cornered spires. Looking at the continuous rows and clusters, it highlights the aesthetics of war. Under Qi Jiguang's construction, the Jinshanling Great Wall became the most complex and densely towered section of the Great Wall, offering a very unique viewing experience. Jinshanling Great Wall is located north of Beijing, about a 2-hour drive from the city center via the G45 Daguang Expressway. It is open from 05:00 to 18:30 (ticket sales stop at 17:00, last entry at 17:30).

Alone on the great wall 🤩

Easy trip from downtown Beijing.We rent a taxi to Jinshanling part of the great wall. It is 2 hours drive to go there. Once there you can walk to the great wall via a road or using the cable car. The view was fantastic! We were able to enjoy it 100%, we just crossed a few people. The experience of being nearly only us with the wall finishing far away at the horizon was amazing. Bathroom on the way and small restaurants at the entrance before the cable car. Quite useful after the drive from Beijing.

The Jinshanling Great Wall is located on the Greater and Lesser Jinshanling in Bakushiyang, Luanping County, Hebei Province. It is an important part of the Great Wall from the Ming Dynasty. In the first year of the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1567), Qi Jiguang was stationed in the northern border and continued to build numerous enemy towers and battle platforms, making it the most complex and densely arranged section of the Great Wall. The Jinshanling Great Wall starts from Wangjing Tower in the east and stretches to Longyukou in the west, with a total length of about 15 kilometers. The walls are generally about 7 meters high, 6 meters wide at the bottom, and 5 meters wide at the top, allowing five horses to ride abreast. On this section of the Great Wall, there is a dense distribution of enemy towers, battle platforms, and barracks, with a total of 158 towers and platforms. As the most well-preserved section of the Ming Great Wall, the Jinshanling Great Wall has profound archaeological value and is of great significance for studying the history of the Ming Dynasty in China and the life of Qi Jiguang.
