Beijing to Jinshanling Great Wall: A 2-Hour Drive to the Most Beautiful Great Wall
Just back from an amazing trip to the Jinshanling Great Wall with friends, and I have to say, this place is a seriously underrated gem!
Located in Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei Province, bordering Miyun District of Beijing, Jinshanling is only a 2-hour drive from downtown Beijing. For those who prefer to avoid the crowds at popular attractions, Jinshanling is a godsend. With its wide-open views, densely packed watchtowers, and undulating landscape, the scenery is simply breathtaking. It's also refreshingly free from excessive commercial development, earning it the reputation of being the "most beautiful section of the Great Wall." Especially in April and May, when wildflowers bloom across the mountains, it's an ideal choice for a spring hike.
It's also a photographer's paradise. The western section offers magnificent sunrises🌄, while the eastern section boasts stunning sunsets🌅. No matter where you stand, every snap is a potential social media masterpiece.
Here are a few suggested routes for different timeframes:
1. 2-Hour Classic Tour: Start at the middle gate, follow the trail to Zhuanduokou, then walk along the wall to Shalingkou, and finally return to the middle gate via the trail. This route offers a taste of the Great Wall's grandeur without being too strenuous, perfect for those short on time.
2. 2.5-Hour Photography Route: Start at the middle gate, walk to Zhuanduokou, ascend the wall, and continue to Xiaojinshan Tower. This spot offers stunning photo opportunities. Take the cable car back down to the middle gate for a relaxed descent.
3. 4-Hour "Three Wonders" Route: Start at the middle gate, follow the trail to Zhuanduokou, walk along the wall to Dongwuyankou, then take the trail to the east gate, and finally return to the middle gate by shuttle bus. This route showcases three of the Great Wall's most spectacular sights.
4. 4-Hour West Section Hiking Route: Enter from the west gate, follow the hiking trail to Taochunkou, then walk along the wall to Zhuanduokou, continue to the middle gate via the trail, and finally return to the west gate by shuttle bus. This route combines the charm of the Great Wall with the enjoyment of hiking.
5. 4.5-Hour East Section Hiking Route: This is the route I personally experienced. Start at the middle gate, follow the trail to Zhuanduokou, ascend the wall, and pass Shalingkou, Xiaojinshan Tower, Dajinshan Tower, and Houchuankou, finally descending back to the middle gate via the trail. The scenery along this route is picturesque, with every watchtower and section of the wall possessing a unique charm, allowing for a deep appreciation of Jinshanling's beauty.
Spring has sprung, and it's time to get outdoors! Jinshanling Great Wall awaits your exploration.
