(1)All Moments About Lalibela
You will be awestruck! Unbelievable!
Laibela is a national world heritage site located just outside of Amhara Ethiopia. Now, understand that I have been around the world six times and have visited over 100 countries…… but, I cannot remember when I have ever been so moved and rocked to the core like I was when I visited these incredible churches….. If there were ever a bucket list place to visit this would be it completely.
According to UNESCO; “The churches were not constructed in a traditional way but rather were hewn from the living rock of monolithic blocks. These blocks were further chiselled out, forming doors, windows, columns, various floors, roofs etc. This gigantic work was further completed with an extensive system of drainage ditches, trenches and ceremonial passages, some with openings to hermit caves and catacombs”
The few pictures that I posted cannot even do this place justice as you must visit for yourself.

Rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia
#4月好去地方2025 The rock-cut churches of Lalibela are a world cultural heritage. All the churches are carved into the rocks, showing the great achievements of medieval Christian architecture. I visited 11 churches, taking in the detailed carvings and religious frescoes, and felt the power of faith. The villages around the church area retain their traditional way of life and the local residents are warm and friendly. This cultural tour gave me a deep understanding of Africa’s religious history and art.
The rock city of Lalibela
#Lalibela
Lalibela is a remarkable historical town located in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, world-famous for its rock-hewn churches, which are considered among the most incredible architectural achievements of the ancient world. It’s often referred to as the “New Jerusalem” due to its religious significance and the symbolism of its sacred layout.
⸻
Quick Facts:
• Founded: 12th century CE
• Named after: King Lalibela, who ruled Ethiopia in the late 12th and early 13th centuries
• UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978
• Number of churches: 11 monolithic churches, carved directly into rock
• Religion: Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity
⸻
The Rock-Hewn Churches:
These churches were not built, but carved from single blocks of volcanic rock—from the top down—then hollowed out inside. They remain active places of worship.
They are divided into two main groups:
Northern Cluster:
• Biete Medhane Alem: The largest monolithic church in the world
• Biete Maryam: Possibly the oldest and most atmospheric
• Biete Golgotha Mikael: Said to contain the tomb of King Lalibela
• Biete Meskel, Biete Denagel, and others
Southern Cluster:
• Biete Amanuel: Noted for its detailed carvings
• Biete Qeddus Mercoreus: Possibly once a royal palace
• Biete Gabriel-Rufael and others
The Iconic Church:
• Biete Giyorgis (Church of St. George): The most famous, shaped like a perfect cross and often seen in photographs of Lalibela.

St. George Church Ethiopia
#Overseas travel
It dates back to the late 12th or early 13th century AD and is one of the 11 most famous churches in the Lalibela region (it looks prettier because it has a carved roof and no protective tent like the others)
According to Ethiopian cultural history, it was built after King Gebre Meskel Lalibela had a vision where he was instructed by St. George and God to build a church.
We visited it very early in the morning.
(6:30-7:00 AM) to also see the morning prayer. If you don't get there at that time, you won't be able to reach the sea until this celebration ends around 8:30 AM. Also, you will see more tourists (which we found throughout the trip), so Rico wakes up early and enjoys the full experience!

Lalibela
The absolute highlight of any visit to Ethiopia is the 12th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Inspired by his visit to Jerusalem King Lalibela wanted to create a New Jerusalem in Ethiopia. How they managed to carve these beautiful churches out of the rock, how big the workforce was and how long they have been working on it is not known. The result is magnificent and goes beyond imagination. What it makes more special, even magical, is that the churches are operating like time never passed. Needless to say Lalibela is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Heaven and Earth
The eleven churches are separated in two clusters and a freestanding church. It is said the clusters represent earthly and heavenly Jerusalem respectively and the freestanding church is the famous Bet Giyorgis. Famous because, being the last one constructed, it is considered by many the most beautiful church and it is symbolizing Lalibela on almost every picture.
Lalibela is alive
While in Lalibela your guide can inform you where a (mostly early morning) service is held. Every Ethiopian Orthodox Church needs to have a Tabot (a replica of the Ark of the Covenant) to be able to function as a church. The Tabot is consecrated in the name of a Saint (the patron) and on the Saint day, once a month, a special service is held. With many churches around there is almost always a Saint day celebrated. It is a very mystical experience to observe and it shows religion in Lalibela is very much alive. If you manage to catch a yearly celebration, when the Tabot is taken out of the Makdas (holy of holiest) you will enjoy a even more colorful event.

Quietly mo
Quietly moving between the rocks, as if walking into a long flowing river of history, thousands of years of splendid culture and prosperity have been witnessed by this pile of rock clusters condensed by the wisdom of the ancient people, strange The unique creativity of the shape, the smooth lines, the exquisite carvings, and the sturdiness that remained unmoving after thousands of years, all telling the wisdom of people at that time, can not help but be curious.
Before the tens of thousands of years of mechanization, how do people hammer into this spectacle of natural and humanity, and curious and admirable can not help but sigh, "African miracle" really worthy of the name .
