2025 Kittila Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in February)

How would you feel if you would be taken to a remote place far from others and you would be able to breathe the completely pure air and swim in (practically) drinkable and completely clear water? Would you love to go to a sandy beach in that kind of place? In Finnish Lapland, near the Pallas Fells there’s a place called “the Red Sand”. It has got its name from the reddish color of the beach sand. Actually it’s not officially a beach, it’s a wilderness hut which is situated in a very special place. The Red Sands used to be a hidden treasure very recently but due to social media it has become more and more popular. That also causes some erosion at the very special place. So I make a kind request: please preserve the nature and take your own trash with you. The place is located by the lake Pallasjarvi in Kittila, Finland. Actually you can only go there by car and navigate there by putting “punainenhiekka” to your navigator. I promise you: it’s a remote place in the middle of nowhere. But going there on a midsummer night may surprise you positively - especially if the night is clear. | They look amazing in real life! 🩵 The English word for Finnish glass igloos is "igloo." A more straightforward term is "glass room." 🍀 When we went to Finland, we stayed in some very unique rooms in the Lapland region. To be honest, we still have a long way to go in developing our own ice and snow industry. 📍 There are many beautiful igloos and cabins in Rovaniemi, Saariselkä, and Inari. They all have unique shapes. 🌟 Forest cabins - chalet 🌟 Mobile mini igloos - cabin Make sure to check carefully when booking a room. 🩵 Saariselkä 📍 We visited the popular Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselkä, but the rooms felt a bit small, less than 20 m², which was quite cramped. 📍 Not far away is Northern Light Village, which has newer facilities and rooms twice the size, offering great value for money. So we ended up booking Northern Light Village. 🩵 Inari 👉 In Inari, we stayed in a cabin, which was much better than the igloos. 🩵 Levi ❄ The glass igloos in Levi are cube-shaped, with a square design. The one-way mirror glass exterior walls are very stylish. 🍀 From the outside, they look like mirrors reflecting the forest, but from the inside, you can see everything outside, which is very wild. 🩵 Booking Tips ☕ Most of the glass igloos in Saariselkä include breakfast and dinner, which is convenient. The glass igloos in Levi only include breakfast, but the room rates in Levi are half the price. 🛷 The glass igloo hotels in Saariselkä, Inari, and Levi all offer aurora tours and husky sledding activities. 💰 There are also many glass igloos in Rovaniemi, but they are the most expensive. Considering that the main goal of this trip was to see the aurora, not to stay in a glass igloo, we chose to experience the glass igloos further north. 🛀 The glass igloos here all have electric water heaters, which are not convenient for showering, as you have to wait. The rooms are quite warm, thanks to air conditioning and fireplaces, but they are very dry.

| The ski resort in the Arctic Circle is so beautiful! . 🩵I recently went to Finland to see the Northern Lights. After seeing the Northern Lights, I went to check in at the Levi ski resort in the southwest of Lapland. 👉There are many ski resorts of all sizes in Finland. After all, it is not an exaggeration to say that everyone loves snow and ice here. 🍀The reason why we chose Levi ski resort is that it is relatively more convenient for foreign tourists like us. 🚎About arrival From Lake Inari to Levi, it is about 250 kilometers, and it is polar night in December. 🌈We drove from sunrise to sunset, and after 3 hours, we arrived at the small town of Levi. The road was in good condition as it was a local highway. 👉Before entering Levi, you will first pass through Kittila, which is a transit town built with the airport as its core. Friends who take public transportation can take a taxi or bus here to the town of Levi. It’s very close, about 40 minutes away. 🩵 About Levi Ski Resort ❄Levi is also a region where a snow town is developed with ski resorts as the main activity area. ‼ ️During the polar day, the ski resort will turn on all the lights. It can be said that Levi Ski Resort cured my phobia of night skiing. 😂Rather than saying that it’s hard to see clearly at night, I now feel that the lights at our ski resort are not bright enough. 🏔The ski resort is very large, and zero point is the ski resort lobby. South point connects the novice area and the wild snow area. 🚎The two ski halls are connected by a shuttle bus. 🏩There is a ski-in/ski-out hotel on the top of the mountain, and you need to take a cable car to reach the hotel. 🌅The scenery on the top of the mountain is absolutely beautiful, especially during the polar day in Finland, when the sky in the distance is all pink and blue during the blue hour. ☕You can sit in the cafe on the top of the mountain, keep warm and enjoy the scenery. 🏃‍♀️There is also a hiking trail here, and friends who like snow hiking can easily climb here. ⛷️We experienced skiing here. 🍀The snow equipment is well maintained, with complete numbers of boards, snowshoes and helmets, and convenient rental. 🍀There are many self-service machines where you can buy ski tickets and insurance. 🍀There is a formal ski school, and the coach needs to make an appointment one day in advance. 🩵About Levi Ice and Snow Town ❄The town is linked to the ski resort and also serves as a supporting facility for the ski resort. 🏨There are many hotels and apartments to choose from in the town. For convenience, we stayed in two hotels. 🏪Snow equipment rental, snow entertainment equipment rental, supermarket, information center and other supporting facilities are available. ❣️Overall, it is very friendly to tourists. 🐾There are other snow entertainment activities outside the town, including husky rides, snowmobiles, aurora tours, etc. 🔥Some Aurora cabins and igloo glass houses are also in the jungle outside the town. 🌟Levi is still within the Arctic Circle. Fortunately, we saw the aurora in Levi, as well as the mother-of-pearl clouds that we had never seen before.

The lights found us before we chased them. The news about peak season for Aurora is very very real! I was skeptical at first but our tour guide told us that the peak solar activity in 2024 essentially means all we need is a cloudless sky to see the Northern Lights! We absolutely loved our stay at the Northern Lights Ranch. Everything was so clean, peaceful and the staff here was exceptional. Kati at the reception was lovely and helped me with every question I had. She was always quick to assist, really nice and would always say hi to us. Chef Sami’s food was phenomenal! We loved every single bite and we’re never disappointed. What made breakfast and dinner more special was that he would come to the table and chat with you for a bit and explain the food and where it comes from. The dinning room is really romantic, and the perfect place to have a nice dinner with your significant other. The atmosphere here is incredible and it’s staff just makes this place even better.

We visited this week (November 2023) and had the most incredible time. We stayed in an Aurora suite and every night watched the Northern Lights dancing in the sky from our very own bed!! The tall glass windows are stunning and even if there aren't any lights, you have an incredible view of the starry sky. I have decided I want them in my future house. The food included in your stay is delicious. There is a huge selection of food items at the breakfast buffet included a waffle-making machine! Each night the dinner menu at the buffet changes and there are various options to choose from. The salmon is incredibly tasty so hopefully they have that available when you go. There are a lot of activities to choose from and the staff are very friendly. You can request a warm overall, socks and boots from reception once you arrive and I definitely recommend that you do so. They are such good quality that we could stay outside playing on the sledges for hours without feeling cold or getting wet.
