A Stunning Winter Canyon

A truly unique canyon that is easily accessible to the viewpoint. The initial climb is a bit steep but not difficult. Once you reach the top, the path becomes flat until you reach the distant viewing platform. When we visited in winter, the roads were icy, so we recommend wearing crampons. You should plan to stay here for about an hour, and it is absolutely worth it because the canyon views are breathtaking.

Iceland has different sides as well. There is one problem that Iceland has: mass tourism. This place for example had to be closed due to too many visitors last year (it was opened when we were there). The reason is that Justin Bieber filmed a music video there and many many people decided to visit this place as well. But a lot of people don’t care about nature and don’t walk on paths for example. Hotel Laki

#familytrips2024 Hotel Laki breakfast is really a spread with various hams and eggs, fruits like watermelon and oranges, sausages, cheese and an assortment of beverages. They have juices, oat milk, almond milk, coffee, tea etc. If staying at hotel Laki, because of its remote location, on good clear nights with strong aurora activity, one can go to Laki hotel roof to have a good look at the northern lights.

Antique Laki Bungalow stay

#familytrips2024 Hotel Laki is a nice place to stay if you are travelling at southern part of Iceland. However the budget is on the higher side and hence we decided to stay at Efri Vik Bungalows on Laki hotel compound. These bungalows were built before laki and they were kinda antique. They were still lovely and the stay comes with free breakfast in laki hotel. However the down side is that wifi is weak here.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is located 📍 west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village. You can rent a car in Reykjavik, take Route 1 in the south, and turn onto Route 206 towards Lakagígar. A short drive on a gravel road will lead you to the 🏔canyon.
