Important ancient Khmer castles of Sa Kaeo Province
Prasat Sdok Kok Thom is located in Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province. It is an important ancient Khmer castle in Sa Kaeo Province and the largest in the eastern region. It is believed to have been built in the 14th Buddhist century to house religious figures and perform rituals according to Hindu beliefs. The word Sdok Kok Thom means “a city with reeds growing in a large swamp.” Today, the large swamp in the past can still be seen near the castle. The most valuable and important thing about Prasat Sdok Kok Thom is the discovery of the Sdok Kok Thom stone inscription (stone 2), which records the history of the Khmer people for a period of 200 years.
The castle is made of sandstone with only the remaining door arches on the east and west sides. Inside the covered walkway, there are two sandstone libraries in front of the central castle, which is the main prang. Outside the castle on the east side, there is a large square pond with a stone-paved road from the castle to the pond.
Further in, there is a covered walkway surrounding the castle with a gopura in the middle of the wall. The castle has the main prang in the middle. In front of the main prang The corner of the covered walkway is home to two libraries, which are believed to be used to store textbooks. This castle faces east, just like other Khmer castles. The Khmer believed that the east is the direction of light and auspiciousness, while the west is the direction of death.
The main prang is like Mount Sumeru, surrounded by pillars as a perimeter, indicating that it is the most sacred area. Inside the main prang, there was originally a Shiva lingam, a religious figure representing Shiva, one of the three supreme gods of Hinduism. This indicates that this castle was a religious site of the Shaivism sect, which worships Shiva as the greatest. Currently, only the yoni base remains.
In addition, the castle plan also shows the beliefs of Hinduism in the universe, with Mount Sumeru in the middle, surrounded by a huge ring of water. When you walk into the gopura on the east side of the glass wall, through the moat and covered walkway, it is like entering the center of the universe.

🏖️Environment/Facilities: The weather is quite hot because there is no shade along the way to the castle, but there are big trees to stop and rest at intervals. If you go during November-December, it would be nice. The weather is cool. There are bathrooms in front of the entrance. The bathrooms are clean.
💞Reason for recommendation: Another source of civilization, similar to Phanom Rung Castle because it is also in the Khmer style, but this one is on the plains. You don't have to walk up high stairs like Phanom Rung. The condition is quite complete because it has been renovated.
📸 There are a lot of photo spots. There are castles, trees, clear skies. No matter how you take a photo, it will look good.

Sdok Kok Thom Historical Park is located in Sa Kaeo Province, almost bordering Cambodia. The Fine Arts Department surveyed and developed it until in 2017 it was announced as Sdok Kok Thom Historical Park, making it the 11th historical park in Thailand.
This castle is built in Khmer architecture, made of stone and laterite, consisting of 1 main prang, 2 libraries, surrounded by 2-tiered terraces and a glass wall. Outside, there is a large baray or pond.
On the side, there is a museum telling the story of the castle's restoration. You should stop by before adding flavor to your castle visit.

#familytrips2024 Avery well maintained historic park. There is plenty of parking and nice clean restrooms. There was no entry fee on the day I went. The main structure was a marvel to look at even if parts were restored. This is not a very big site so it’s easy to see everything in less than a hour. Beautiful location close to the Cambodian border. I was surprised how quiet it was given how amazing the structure is. It was free to enter. I'd thoroughly recommend visiting.

#songkran2024 Khmer-style ruins near the Cambodian border in Kok Soon District, northeast of Sa Kaeo Province. After being discovered by a French explorer in 1901, it was left to disrepair for a long time, but restoration work was completed with the cooperation of Japan, and it is now well-maintained as a historical park. The huge stone temple, built under the reign of the 11th-century Cambodian king Udayaditavarman II, is reminiscent of Angkor Wat, albeit only partially, and is worth seeing. Incidentally, there is a museum outside the facility, where panels are displayed explaining the excavation process and the excavated items.

In addition to the beautiful stone castles in the northeastern region of our country, Sa Kaeo also has a beautiful stone castle, which is Prasat Sdok Kok Thom. In the past, the villagers used to call this castle Prasat Muang Phrao because there were coconut trees growing around the castle. Prasat Sdok Kok Thom, Sa Kaeo, is believed to have been built in the 14th Buddhist century. It is the oldest and largest stone castle in the eastern region. The exterior is made of laterite. Importantly, two stone inscriptions written in ancient Khmer script were also discovered. Anyone who likes historical travel and ancient sites

Ancient stone monuments in the style of Hindu religious buildings. The castle was built of sandstone and laterite in the style of Khmer art, Khlang-Bapuan style, during the 15th-16th Buddhist century. The plan of the castle outside is a red stone wall, approximately 127 meters long. The main entrance is a gopura or gate on the east side, made of sandstone. Through the gopura, you will find a U-shaped moat surrounding the castle, approximately 20 meters wide. Further in is a covered gallery surrounding the castle, approximately 42.5 meters long. There is a gopura in the middle of the covered gallery wall on all four sides. This castle faces east. Today, I would like to introduce Prasat Sdok Kok Thom in Sa Kaeo Province.
I would like to recommend this place, “Prasat Sdok Kok Thom”, which is considered the easternmost point of Thailand and is also close to Cambodia.
How close? I would say that it is only 1 km from the Thai-Cambodian border. The advantage is that it is not far from Bangkok. Sounds interesting, right?
