The underground city has a total of eight floors, but currently only four floors are open to tourists. The entire underground city is well connected and is equipped with basic living functions such as kitchens, dormitories, warehouses and toilets. The only difference is that the lighting equipment at that time was probably still in the era of oil lamps. The intricate indoor passages may make you lost in this underground city without a special guide. Before going, I only planned the driving route, roughly Istanbul - Izmir - Fethiye - Kas - Cappadocia - Istanbul. After arriving, I found that buying a museum pass was more cost-effective, so it turned into a route to recoup the pass cost by visiting attractions. D1 Arrive early at Istanbul Airport, stay near Taksim Square, rent a car nearby at Sixt (pick up the car early the next day), city walk in the old town during the day, Bosphorus Strait sunset cruise in the evening. D2: Istanbul - Izmir - Cesme town - Selcuk. The most tiring day, first head to Izmir, check in at Konak Clock Tower, no parking available, then go to Cesme to visit Cesme Castle and the town, very few people, then head straight to Selcuk near Ephesus that night. Recommend skipping Izmir (difficult parking, outrageous parking fees, traffic jams) and Cesme town (too far, not on the way, one hour one way, similar scenery). Day 3: Selcuk - Ephesus - Pamukkale - Denizli. In the morning, buy the pass at Ephesus ruins, visit the ruins, have lunch and check out the Ephesus Museum, there is also St. John’s Basilica on the hill which can be skipped. In the afternoon, visit Pamukkale, on the hill, it rained and was very cold, and the scenic area is very large so didn’t explore much, stayed in the city of Denizli at night. Day 4: Denizli - Fethiye - D400 Thrilling Night Road - near Kas town. Head to Fethiye, directly book paragliding at Oludeniz Beach for the same day, arrive at 1 PM, fly at 4 PM, after playing and resting, depart in the evening along D400 to Kas town. The night road is really hard to drive, especially the counterclockwise direction of D400, the most beautiful road, basically no street lights, dark on the road, dark on the mountain, and the sea by the cliff is even darker, stopped at a small town 20 km from Kas. Day 5: Kas - Myra Ancient City - Aspendos Ancient Theater - Side - Manavgat. Circle around the island, visit the small town, if you have been to Greece you can skip Kas. At noon, visit Myra Ancient City and St. Nicholas Church. In the afternoon, visit Aspendos Ancient Theater, head to Side Ancient City before evening, check out Apollo Temple ruins, stay in the city. Day 6: Manavgat - Konya - Cappadocia. Morning mountain road rush, arrive at Konya at noon to visit Mevlana Museum (Rumi’s Mausoleum), then start the Cappadocia wasteland tour, after arriving in the evening, head straight to Goreme Open Air Museum (Dark Church) for a visit, stroll around Goreme at night, eat pot stew beef, stay in a cave hotel. Day 7: Goreme. Go to Love Valley before 5 AM to watch hot air balloons, visit Derinkuyu and Kaymakli underground cities, Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery. Day 8: Cappadocia - Ankara - Istanbul. Arrive in Ankara at noon, visit Ataturk Mausoleum and Anatolian Civilizations Museum, arrive in Istanbul at night. Day 9: Istanbul. Return the car, visit Galata Tower and Topkapi Palace, end the sightseeing tour, overall worth the ticket price. Watch Whirling Dervishes at night, eat Turkish Ocakbasi. Day 10: Return trip

Continuing from the previous part, many people confuse the relationship between Cappadocia and Göreme. Cappadocia is a large region, and Göreme is a small town within this region. The famous hot air balloons are in Göreme town. After breakfast, we set off by car. 1️⃣ Kaymakli Underground City: We checked out in the morning and set off. It’s still a bit of a drive from the hotel. Since we didn’t take a hot air balloon ride on the first day, we had plenty of time, so we came to see it. It’s also included in the museum pass. Inside, it looks like the underground caves shown in photo 2. Honestly, without a guide, it’s not very interesting. I found a guide at the entrance, and he asked for 30 euros per person! Later, the three of us paid 30 euros total, which I think was still a bit much. The main point is to explain how early Christians took refuge underground. If you have enough time, it’s worth a visit. 2️⃣ Pigeon Rock: On the way from the underground city to Göreme, we passed by here. It’s a cliff face with many holes where pigeons lived, as shown in photo 2. We took a stroll and snapped some photos. 3️⃣ Uçhisar Castle: Driving past Pigeon Rock, you’ll reach the castle shown in photo 4. Walking inside, you see the small houses built on the mountain as in photo 5. There are many restaurants and shops, so you can walk around and explore. 4️⃣ Göreme Open-Air Museum: Located on the other side of Göreme town. If you come from Uçhisar, you’ll pass through Göreme town. I recommend checking into your hotel first. This open-air museum is also related to early Christians. Without a guide, it’s just a quick look around. There’s a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the site, passing through a commercial street where you can shop a bit. 5️⃣ Cave Hotel: Photos 7 and 8 show the hotel I chose. The location is quite good, and the key point is that it’s very new! The staff are very friendly, and the breakfast terrace is great! There are just too many tourists, and prices are high. After a day of sightseeing, there’s not much to buy. Just eat something casual at night and spend the rest of the time relaxing at the cave hotel. Suggestion: Skip Izmir (difficult parking, expensive parking fees, traffic jams) and Cesme Town (too far, out of the way, one hour one way, similar scenery, Greek style), and go directly to Selçuk to stay to avoid exhaustion. Day 3: Selçuk - Ephesus - Pamukkale - Denizli. In the morning, bought a museum pass at the Ephesus ruins, toured the ruins, had lunch at the Ephesus Museum, and skipped the St. John’s Basilica on the hill. In the afternoon, went to Pamukkale on the mountain. It rained and was very cold, and the scenic area is very large, so didn’t explore much. Stayed in the city of Denizli at the foot of the mountain that night. Day 4: Denizli - Fethiye - D400 Thrilling Night Road - Near Kas Town. Departed in the morning for Fethiye, went straight to Oludeniz Beach to book paragliding for the day. Arrived at 1 pm and booked a 4 pm paragliding session for 90 euros per person at the first shop at the beach entrance. Must keep an empty stomach before paragliding. At 4 pm, took a car with the instructor to the mountaintop over 1700 meters high to prepare for takeoff. The mountain road was fast and dizzying even before flying; after flying, even more dizzy. After resting, set off in the evening along D400 to Kas Town. The night road was really hard to drive, especially the counterclockwise D400, the most beautiful road, with almost no streetlights. The road was dark, the mountain was dark, and the sea by the cliff was even darker. Stopped at a small town 20 km from Kas to eat and stay overnight, planning to visit Kas the next day. First saw a lively place full of people singing and dancing, intending to experience the local atmosphere, but it was a wedding. Then used Google Maps to find a flatbread restaurant. The accommodation was a guesthouse recommended by the restaurant waiter. Day 5: Kas - Myra Ancient City - Aspendos Ancient Theater - Side Ancient City - Manavgat. The weather was great. First, circled the island next to Kas Town, then strolled around the town. Parking was inconvenient, took a few photos and left. If you have been to Greece, you can skip Kas. At noon, visited Myra Ancient City, a representative of Lycian civilization. Nearby is St. Nicholas Church with exquisite murals, the home of Santa Claus, worth seeing. In the afternoon, visited Aspendos Ancient Theater (the best-preserved ancient theater with a capacity of 15,000). Sometimes there are performances in the evening. Before dusk, went to Side Ancient City to see the Apollo Temple ruins. The Side scenic area is much larger than expected and crowded. Stayed overnight in Manavgat city. Day 6: Manavgat - Konya - Cappadocia. In the morning, sped along mountain roads, feeling like racing in a game. Arrived in Konya at noon, visited the Mevlana Museum (Rumi’s tomb), then started the wasteland tour of Cappadocia. Arrived in Cappadocia in the evening and went straight to the Goreme Open-Air Museum (Dark Church) to check in. Walked around Goreme town at night, ate local specialty pot beef, and stayed in a cave hotel in Uchisar town. Day 7: Goreme. Drove at 5 am to Love Valley to watch hot air balloons and see the sunrise, then went back to catch up on sleep. After breakfast, started the museum pass tour: Derinkuyu Underground City, Kaymakli Underground City, Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery (worth seeing). The underground cities are tiring; one is enough. Day 8: Cappadocia - Ankara - Istanbul. Another day of rushing. Arrived in the capital Ankara at noon, visited Ataturk Mausoleum and Anatolian Civilizations Museum. Arrived in Istanbul in the evening, driving a total of 7 to 8 hours. Day 9: Istanbul city walk. Returned the car in the morning, having driven a total of 3,080 km. Visited Galata Tower, and in the afternoon visited the most expensive ticketed Topkapi Palace, ending the museum tour, which was worth the price. In the evening, watched the Whirling Dervishes, shopped, and had a Turkish Ocakbasi barbecue dinner. Day 10: Return trip.

As for the weather in Turkey, I won’t say much—it's rainy in the morning and only sunny after 3 PM. I picked a few spots to cover in one day and found they’re all pretty similar, so no need to visit them all 🤣 1️⃣ Göreme Sunset Viewpoint (worth visiting) 2️⃣ Kaymakli Underground City (very boring) 3️⃣ Fairy Chimneys (very boring) 4️⃣ Pigeon Valley (extremely boring) 5️⃣ Devrent Valley (worth visiting) 6️⃣ Uçhisar Castle (requires hiking) . Cappadocia is basically a karst landscape, so almost everywhere looks similar. When the sun is out, photos come out really beautiful. When I was there, it was rainy and cloudy, but I tried hard to take some nice photos anyway. . You can try staying in a cave hotel, which has a lot of local charm. It actually feels quite safe staying inside 😂 The only downside is the ventilation isn’t very good. .

Having spent some time in Cappadocia and explored the attractions near Goreem, I suddenly came across the Church of the Ascension. Outside the church lies the famous underground city of Kayaşehir Kalesi (completely free). Cappadocia's most popular attractions are the Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities. This free underground city has obvious advantages: virtually deserted, free, more pristine, and conveniently located near Nev. The Church of the Ascension (also often called the Nevşehir Underground Church) is hidden within the Kayaşehir area. Rich in history and unique frescoes, its hidden location isn't above ground, but rather carved directly into the ground/rock. Location: "Kayaşehir Kahvehanesi" (Kayaşehir Café), (Photos 5️⃣ and 6️⃣). Parking is available at the entrance, where there's a souvenir shop. The entrance is inside the parking lot, leading to the underground city. At the "mountain's top" is a well-maintained walking path and small garden offering panoramic views of Nevşehir city. Next door is a small museum about the Rock City, worth a visit.
