The park was established with the planting of its first tree, an Oak, by a visiting German Princess. The Nanu Oya runs through the park, creating a number of small lakes. A number of rare bird species can be found in the park. At the far end of the park is a small children's playground and miniature ridable railway.

Moon Plains, also known as Sandathenna, is a 400-metre long, 40 metre deep valley in Ranhawadigama, about 6km from Nuwara Eliya. What was once part of a catchment area, Moon Plains is now a notable Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone since March 2014. Lake Gregory is a reservoir in heart of the tea country hill city, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873 in order to make more land available for the expansion of the town. We spent a leisure evening in Gregory Park located west of Lake Gregory. A small entrance fee to Gregory Park applies to foreigners. Other than taking a stroll or having a picnic in the park, you can also hire a speedboat or paddle boat to go out on the lake. You can even ride a horse in the park! There are several food stalls in the park selling local delicacies. We had a fun time exploring the lake by hiring swan-shaped pedal boats. My children also got to ride on a pony. Nuwara Eliya is situated at an elevation of 1,868 m in the misty hills of central Sri Lanka. It is known as “Little England” of Sri Lanka for its temperate climate and colonial architecture. We had a wonderful stay in Kent Cottage, one of the beautiful colonial style bungalows in the Little England Cottages. There are 4 bedrooms in the Kent Cottage. The room we stayed in had a king bed and an extra single bed. The bathroom was huge and came with a bathtub. The whole bungalow was elegantly decorated in English style and for once we forgot that we were actually in Sri Lanka! The whole neighborhood is gated and houses many other similar cottages surrounded by beautiful gardens. We had hearty and delicious breakfast served in the restaurant. Tea plantations fields must be included in the TO-DO list of places to visit in Colombo. Even though the location is not very convenient as it is a bit far from downtown, it is still totally worthy to visit. The whole visit, including walking around and taking pictures should last between 2 to 3 hours. It is a special place which has a huge number of trees, creating such a clean and refreshing environment. After the visit, you can also enjoy a good tea and purchase high quality tea with a reasonable price. This 3.5 hour train journey from Nanu Oya-Ella is one of the most scenic train journeys i’ve ever experienced. It guarantees an incredible view as it crosses the southern Sri Lankan hill country & slide through the clouds. you will be amazed by the grand view along the train ride especially if you are able to secure the open door of the train. you will not bother to take a seat i can assure that. the journey offers you stunning landscapes of green and lush tea plantations and mountain views. since this train ride is a must do & totally recommended, i advise you all to buy the ticket in advance. if only i had the time, i wish i can try the train from Ella to Kandy as well #scenictrain #srilanka #ella

Baker's falls is a spectacular and stunning waterfall located in the Nuwara Eliya area, 3 kilometers from the main gate of Horton Plains national park. Though it is not a tall waterfall, but it is extremely beautiful and offers stunning views from various angles. The climb to the falls, named for late Sir Samuel Baker, a well-known British explorer and game hunter during the British colonial period, provides breathtaking views over Horton Plains. It is also accessible from the towns of Pattipola and Ohiya. A recognized pathway leads from Pattipola to World's End and loops back to Baker's Falls. My trip to Nuwara Eliya was a peaceful and refreshing escape from the tropical heat of Sri Lanka. Nestled in the Central Highlands, the town is known for its cool climate, tea plantations, and colonial charm. I enjoyed boat rides on Gregory Lake, visited the beautiful Hakgala Botanical Garden, and explored the scenic tea estates. The fresh mountain air, misty mornings, and lush green landscapes made it feel like a completely different world. It was a perfect blend of nature, relaxation, and culture — an unforgettable experience.

Sri Lanka was formerly a British colony known as Ceylon, a name it kept for nearly a quarter-century after independence. It was during the British era that tea first began to be cultivated and manufactured here. The story of Ceylon Tea begins with coffee. The coffee plant had already been found growing naturally among the approaches to the central hill country. Then British Governor Barnes threw the weight of official support behind large-scale cultivation. Land in the central hills was sold for a few pence an acre, official funds were dedicated to research and experiments in coffee-growing, planters and merchants were provided with incentives and support. Most important of all, Barnes provided the infrastructure – a network of roads, including the all-important trunk route from Kandy to Colombo – that enabled coffee-planters to get their produce to town, and then to market in England. In the 1870s, coffee plantations were devastated0 wby a fungal disease called Hemileia vastatrix or coffee rust, better known as "coffee leaf diseas" or "coffee blight”. The death of the coffee industry marked the end of an era when most of the plantations on the island were dedicated to producing coffee beans.
