Explore the off-the-beaten-path destination of Jianshui in Yunnan
Avoid the crowds | Explore the lesser-known gem of Jianshui in Yunnan|||🌄 Are you still struggling with where to go for fun? If you want to avoid the crowds and find a quiet place, don't just focus on Dali and Lijiang. Jianshui in Yunnan is a great choice.
·──
🏞 Attractions:
1️⃣ Jianshui Ancient Town. The ancient town boasts a long history and culture with a rich cultural heritage, including the Chaoyang Tower, Zhu Family Garden, Confucian Temple, Lin'an Government Office, and the Big Well. Chaoyang Tower is an ancient city wall that predates even the Tiananmen, and it has stood firm through many battles; Zhu Family Garden is a building from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the Big Well offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle of Jianshui.
2️⃣ Jianshui Little Train. Whether to take it depends on personal preference. The train stations it stops at are very distinctive and worth visiting. There are also ways to enjoy the area without taking the little train, see the guide below👇
3️⃣ Tuanshan Folk Houses. Well-preserved traditional buildings and beautiful natural scenery, with winding flagstone paths flanked by quaint houses and shady courtyards, evoke a sense of peacefulness through the ages.
4️⃣ Ant Workshop. An art piece transformed from an abandoned brickyard, very photogenic, suitable for taking pictures.
5️⃣ Shuanglong Bridge. The 360-degree unobstructed Shuanglong Bridge, also known as the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, has withstood two hundred years of wind and rain and still retains its original appearance, making it a great spot to watch the sunset.
🍜 Cuisine: Jianshui tofu, grass sprout rice noodles, steam pot chicken, papaya water.
🏨 Accommodation options: You can stay inside or around the ancient town. Jianshui is not big, and taxi fares usually start at the base price. I stayed at the Qianyu Inn next to the ancient town, which is very convenient to get to the ancient town, and the landlady will call you home every night to eat grilled tofu.
🚗 Transportation
✈ Fly to Kunming, then take a high-speed train from Kunming to Jianshui.
It's only a 2-hour drive from Kunming to Jianshui, and you can also drive or take a taxi.
👀 Travel TIPS:
✅ When you first arrive in Jianshui, you can spend a day wandering around the ancient town and the surrounding alleys. Jianshui is known as a 'living ancient town' not only because of the large number of well-preserved ancient buildings but more importantly, because the local lifestyle is well preserved, unlike some ancient towns that are left with nothing but a shell.
✅ The Ant Workshop is very photogenic, but be sure to choose a sunny day🌞 to go, otherwise, it's quite ordinary. Next to the Ant Workshop is the Wulong Lake Park, which can be visited together, and Jianshui's 'Little California' is located within this park.
✅ Ways to enjoy the area without taking the little train. If you don't want to take the little train but still want to visit each station, you can choose to take a taxi🚗 or a scooter🛵. Most people choose to visit Lin'an Station - Xianghui Bridge Station - Tuanshan Station, and then go to Shuanglong Bridge to watch the sunset🌅. I took a taxi to visit the three stations and Tuanshan Folk Houses first, then took the No. 19 tourist bus🚌 to Shuanglong Bridge to enjoy the sunset. It's very convenient to get a taxi around Shuanglong Bridge.
brianna.likes.adrenal.cortex Jianshui, Yunnan, this small town, I just want to say 【Too Late to Meet】
Yunnan really has too many ancient towns and stories,
Jianshui is one of them, low-key yet profound.
You can describe it with the phrase "Too Late to Meet".
Both quaint and modern,
from the Daban Well outside the west gate of the ancient town, where residents fetch water every day, to the French-style narrow-gauge train that passes through the countryside,
from the Jianshui tofu roasted on charcoal in every household, to the bizarre and dopamine-rich colors of the Ant Workshop,
Jianshui is really suitable for slow travel experiences.
Go before it becomes too famous!
【Recommended Places】
1⃣️ Jianshui Ancient Town
This is an ancient town that is slower than Dali and more quaint than Lijiang. It is the 'living' small town in our hearts, with over a dozen ancient wells still in use, Jianshui tofu eaten by every household, the cigarette box dance in the square at night, ancient buildings (Zhu Family Garden, Confucian Temple, Chaoyang Tower), and a large number of indigenous people still living here, all reasons why we love this place.
2⃣️ Jianshui Little Train
Ride the retro yellow train from the city to the countryside, with the spring breeze blowing by your ears, check in at different retro stations (Xianhui Bridge Station, Shuanglong Bridge Station, Tuanshan Station), and see the trendy market at Xianhui Bridge and the sunset at Shuanglong Bridge.
Along the way, there are baskets of strawberries sold by villagers, delicious and cheap.
You can also rent a bicycle and ride along the train's route, starting from the south gate of the ancient town, heading west along the 'Baituan Highway' all the way to 'Tuanshan Folk Houses'.
3⃣️ Shuanglong Bridge
Also known as the Seventeen-Arch Ancient Bridge, listed among China's top ten ancient bridges, the ancient bridge is beautiful, and the sunset is even more stunning, with local specialty stalls all around the bridge.
4⃣️ Xianhui Bridge Station
French architectural style, there is a small market next to the station, and a retro literary cafe. Order a cup of coffee here, and time should be wasted in such a place.
5⃣️ Ant Workshop
This is a fairy-tale world created with colorful brick walls, great for taking photos. If you don't like taking photos, you can skip it (if you order coffee, you can enter without buying a ticket, saving 40 haha).
🚗【Transportation】2.5h drive from Kunming, or 2h by high-speed train from Kunming to Jianshui.
🍜【Cuisine】Jianshui tofu, grass sprout rice noodles, Jianshui barbecue, steam pot chicken, papaya water.
Recommended restaurants: Tuwafang, Weidao Lin'an, Banjing Tofu Workshop, Yao's Barbecue, Li Hua Jian.
🏠【Accommodation】: Jianshui Tingziyun Hotel
A genuine hundred-year-old courtyard, quaint and quiet, very suitable for friends or family to rent a small courtyard for a trip,
Have afternoon tea and chat in the courtyard, the hotel will also provide ancient well water, which is perfect for brewing tea, located within the ancient town, very convenient location.
The temperature during the Spring Festival is very comfortable, and compared to other popular cities in Yunnan, it will not be too crowded, highly recommended to come here this Spring Festival to experience spring in advance!
China's last living ancient city is more down-to-earth than Lijiang and has lower prices than Dali
It has a history of over a thousand years and was once the absolute center of southern Yunnan. In the Ming Dynasty's 'Dian Lue', there was a record of 'Gold in Lin'an, Silver in Dali', where 'Lin'an' was its old name, indicating its wealth and prosperity at the time;
It escaped the massive demolitions of the last century's construction boom. To this day, the original inhabitants still live in the city, leading lives not much different from their ancestors, and thus, it is known as 'China's last living ancient city'.
This ancient city,
is the Jianshui Ancient City, which exudes a sense of relaxation from the inside out.

Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The most comfortable small city in Yunnan - Jianshui Ancient City
Jianshui, more than 150 kilometers away from Kunming, although it does not have the romance of Dali and Lijiang, the romance in Jianshui's life is different.
Transportation: It takes about two hours to drive from Kunming. High-speed rail, departing from Kunming South, also takes about two hours.
Accommodation: Most of the homestays near Jianshui Ancient City are good, and the prices are reasonable. We stayed at the Qianyu Guanjing Homestay, which has a very good environment. It is also close to the ancient city, so you can go out for a stroll at any time.
Jianshui Ancient City is worth a good stroll. In the morning, many locals sit and chat, buy vegetables and walk their children. Chaoyang Gate, Zhu's Garden, Zhang's Garden, Confucius Temple, etc. are all in the ancient city. Walking slowly, every step may have a thousand years of history.
The small train from Lin'an to Tuanshan must also be taken once. It's a wonderful experience. Lin'an Station is very distinctive, and the small train is very retro. It passes through Shuanglong Bridge Station and Xianghui Bridge Station, with the terminal at Tuanshan. The scenery along the way is particularly beautiful, and the station is very retro and photogenic.
Tuanshan is a simple village. The yellow earth-based houses and the walls full of plants are worth taking the time to see.
Food, Beizibo, Nanjianshui, Jianshui barbecue must be tasted, any shop is delicious, Zhaotong small skewers, grilled chicken feet, grilled pig skin, grilled tilapia, etc., the taste is very good.
Shilin tofu must also be tasted, basically barbecue shops have it, Jianshui's pot is also delicious, the price is also reasonable.
It's a pity that I didn't go to Shilin. Jianshui is definitely a place worth visiting many times. Staying in the life, people will unconsciously stop the internal consumption, every day is beautiful. Jianshui Ancient City·Jianshui
Treasure Inn in the ancient city of Jianshui, Yunnan
Jianshui Ancient City
【Qianyu View Inn】~Booked this inn with a try-it-out attitude, it really didn't disappoint! Stayed for two nights, when leaving, both adults and children felt reluctant to leave.
【Location】Located in a small alley in the ancient city, about 3 minutes walk from the Chaoyang Tower of the ancient city, it is very quiet at night.
【Features】What attracts me is not only the overall symmetry of the courtyard, the simple and comfortable design and the clean and tidy rooms, but also a sense of human touch.
✅Human touch 1: The boss and the boss's wife treat all guests like their own friends. When you check in, they will make you a pot of tea and some fruits. If you have time, you can go downstairs and chat with the boss's wife and have a chat.
✅Human touch 2: (The Jianshui tofu shop that was delayed by the inn) The boss and the boss's wife personally roast tofu for the guests at night, bring out their homemade garlic oil (plus chili powder, it's especially fragrant!), select Jianshui Ximen tofu that has been fermented for three days (as the boss said, tofu fermented for three days has the best taste, one day less is not fragrant enough, one day more will be slightly sour), guests from all over the world sit around the small table in the courtyard of the inn, chat while eating tofu, everyone exchanges travel spots and experiences, the atmosphere feels like a big family.
✅Human touch 3: The breakfast is a nine-square grid made by the boss's wife herself, which includes eggs, fruits, porridge, sweet potatoes, corn, coarse grain buns, nuts, cucumber strips... It's nutritious and looks very beautiful. The boss's wife brought out her homemade leek flower sauce, it was so delicious, I couldn't help but ask for another one, it was especially satisfying to put it in the porridge for my Sichuan stomach.
✅Human touch 4: Speaking of delicious sauces, the boss's wife will also share the production method with you, haha, blame me for being clumsy (lan), still have no confidence to make this taste?
✅Human touch 5: On the day of check-in, it happened to be the traditional Qixi Festival, the boss's wife personally packaged roses and put them in each room, which was really thoughtful~
【Viewing Parent-child Room】For those who travel with children, the room I booked is highly recommended, a 1.8-meter bed, a 1.2-meter bed, avoiding the restraint and stuffiness of letting children sleep in the middle, the whole room is clean and tidy.
The inn has a small but exquisite entrance courtyard, where children can play with other children.
【Others】
The inn has a total of 7 rooms, basically full in the peak season, so book in advance!
Go up to the rooftop, you can see the tile roofs of the entire ancient city, which reflects a kind of tranquil beauty under the blue sky~ When the weather is good, the inn's characteristic carpets and pillows will be laid out, which feels very special when taking pictures!

Early Spring in Southeast Yunnan - A Riot of Colors Between Heaven and Earth (Part 5): The Seventeen-Arch Bridge of Jianshui
Yunnan's Jianshui is a beautiful and historically significant ancient town. When it comes to the history of Jianshui, everyone thinks of the Shuanglong Bridge.
It is located to the west of the ancient city of Jianshui County in Yunnan Province and is the longest existing ancient stone arch bridge in China, one of the famous historical sites in Yunnan Province, and has been included in the annals of Chinese bridge construction. It is known as the 'Number One Ancient Bridge in the East.'
The Seventeen-Arch Bridge is also called the Shuanglong Bridge, named after the confluence of the Tachong and Lujiang rivers, where a bridge locks the 'twin dragons' together.
Another explanation is that there are two stone-carved dragon heads and tails on either side of the bridge.
The dragon head is above the stream, and the dragon tail is below the stream, both carved vividly, hence the name Shuanglong Bridge.
The Shuanglong Bridge was first built during the Jiaqing period of the Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than six hundred years. It belongs to the covered bridge architecture. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, only three stone arches were built on the Lujiang River. Later, due to the flooding of the Tachong and Lujiang rivers and the gradual widening of the riverbed, the small three-arch bridge stood alone in the middle of the river and could not span both banks. Thus, fourteen more arches were added in the nineteenth year of the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty.
Three flying-eave style pavilions were built in the middle of the bridge, with pavilions within pavilions, reflecting each other, forming a magnificent view, and is an extremely precious masterpiece in the history of Chinese bridge construction.
The pavilions at both ends are slightly smaller, with a large and spectacular one in the middle, known as the 'Dian Nan Grand View Pavilion.'
Time flies, and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge has stood over the two rivers for nearly 300 years. If you come to Jianshui, be sure to visit here, stroll on the smooth stone pavement, touch the mottled bridge railings, this bridge with extraordinary momentum, beautiful design, and the wisdom of Chinese national culture, will not disappoint you.
(About one kilometer away from the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, there is a motorhome campsite. As long as you stay for more than 4 days, the average cost is 30 yuan per day, including water and electricity. Staying there for a few days, watching the sunrise and sunset by the bridge in the morning and evening, will surely be a poetic experience!)
The Seventeen-Arch Bridge of Jianshui
The Seventeen-Arch Bridge is the colloquial name for the Shuanglong Bridge, located in Baijiaying Village, Xizhuang Town, Jianshui County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It spans the confluence of the Lujiang River and the Tachong River, hence the name Shuanglong Bridge, which means 'a bridge locking two dragons'. The Shuanglong Bridge was originally built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, only a three-arch stone bridge was built over the Lujiang River. Later, due to the flooding of the Lujiang and Tachong rivers, the Tachong River dike in the southwest broke, and the river water rushed towards the village not far from the bridge. The flood was fierce, and the village suffered severe damage, which was later named Shuidaying Village. Now, Shuidaying Village belongs to Baijiaying Administrative Village, Xizhuang Town, Jianshui County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The Tachong River changed its course and merged into the Lujiang River, which also widened the river surface by three to four times. The originally built three-arch stone bridge was left hanging in the middle of the river. In the 19th year of the Daoguang period, fourteen more arches were built and connected to the original three arches, making a total of seventeen arches. Locals call the Shuanglong Bridge the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. From a distance, it looks like a ship with pavilions, and from close up, it resembles a long rainbow lying on the waves. There are three flying eave-style pavilions built on the bridge, with the two at the ends being slightly smaller and the one in the middle being large and spectacular. The Shuanglong Bridge is about 150 meters long, a single-arch bridge. The bridge is constructed with six large wooden pillars, with wooden planks laid on the bridge deck, wooden pillars erected, and a tiled roof, forming a long corridor in the air. On May 25, 2006, the Shuanglong Bridge was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
🚉 Transportation Strategy:
The Shuanglong Bridge is located in Shuidaying Natural Village, Baijiaying Administrative Village, Xizhuang Town, Jianshui County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is about 12 kilometers from Jianshui Station to Shuanglong Bridge, which takes about 20 minutes.
⏳ Visiting Time:
Free to visit, the recommended visiting time is 30 minutes to 1 hour.
The Jianshui Seventeen-Arch Bridge, anchoring the twin dragons to contain the calamitous waters
The Twin Dragon Bridge, located 5 li west of the ancient city of Jianshui in Yunnan Province, is a large stone arch bridge with three pavilions and seventeen arches, commonly known as the 'Seventeen-Arch Bridge'. In Chinese geomancy, it is customary to refer to rivers or mountain ranges as 'dragons'. The Tachong and Lujiang rivers converge here, and the bridge is named for its function of 'anchoring the twin dragons'. In the middle of the bridge stands a three-story pavilion, and at one end there is a pavilion. The bridge is built of huge stones, with a total length of 148.26 meters and a width of 3 meters, looking from afar like a ship with pavilions.

Zhangjia Garden Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The Zhang Family Garden in Tuanshan Village, Jianshui, Yunnan
The Zhang Family Garden in Tuanshan Village was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, covering an area of more than 3,000 square meters. Its architectural style is a fortress-like courtyard complex. The garden combines different architectural styles from the Yunnan Yi ethnic group's earth buildings, Jiangnan gardens, and defensive castles. Hence, the Zhang Family Garden is also known as the Castle Garden. The owners of the Zhang Family Garden, Zhang Guoyi and Zhang Guomin, were immensely wealthy. They made their fortune from tin mining and later became rich merchants, second only to the wealthiest Zhu family in Jianshui. After becoming wealthy, they returned to their village to undertake massive construction projects, resulting in the Zhang Family Garden that is preserved to this day.
Entering the Zhang Family Garden, one is greeted by a residence with dark tiles and flying eaves. Inside, it is divided into three sections with 119 rooms, 21 courtyards, and an elegant garden temple and defensive turret. Due to their substantial wealth and to protect against invasions, the turrets were designed with gun holes in the walls for better observation of enemies, making the garden easy to defend and hard to attack. The second section of the Zhang Family Garden is the garden temple, which is the area that has been preserved and renovated. It retains the architectural layout from a century ago, with an artificial pond in the center surrounded by four two-story buildings with flying eaves. With rockeries, flowing springs, and flowers in the pond, one can enjoy a cup of tea in the garden or on the pavilion, quietly savoring a conversation with the century-old history.
