When traveling to Fukuoka, make sure to choose a sunny day to visit Shima Island. The gradient blue sea and the less crowded beaches are simply irresistible! 🚌 Transportation There are direct buses from downtown Fukuoka (Hakata Station/Tenjin), running every 30 minutes to an hour, with a journey time of just over an hour. The coastal scenery in the latter part of the journey is stunning. Get off at Futamigaura (Meoto Iwa) Station, and the white torii gate on the water is right in front of you. A one-way trip costs around 1000 yen. 🍽️ Food Seafood is a must-try when visiting Shima Island! We recommend Itoshima Seafood Hall Futamigaura Main Store, which is just a few minutes' walk from the white torii gate. We waited for about 15 minutes and got a window seat (the restaurant is quite large, so if you don't mind where you sit, there's no need to wait). The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and the average cost is around 3000 yen per person. Another dessert shop near Palm Beach is called SURF SIDE CAFE Palm Beach Gardens. The mango snow top is generously portioned and very refreshing, and they also serve main courses. The café has a great environment, with outdoor seating available, and the average cost is around 800 yen per person. 📷 Photography If you want to take a photo in the middle of the white torii gate, you'll need to queue up (everyone lines up very orderly). If you're in a hurry or afraid of the sun, you can do what we did and stand to the side, snapping a few quick shots when people change positions. Walking along the beach, you can reach Palm Beach, where the beaches are less crowded and very comfortable. There are many food trucks and craft shops along the way where you can buy some souvenirs. 🕒 Itinerary We left Hakata Station at 12:30 PM and arrived at Meoto Iwa at 1:30 PM. Personally, I think half a day is enough, but if you want to visit more places (like the swing, wings, and other photo spots), it's better to leave in the morning. There’s really no lack of things to do in Itoshima. A couple of friends drove me there for the magnificence that was #RaizansennyojiTaihioin. It was a rainy day but that only added to the enchantment of the picturesque temple. Lots of people came for the momiji so there was a bit of a queue on the road up the mountain. Not bad but do be prepared as you may have to wait for up to 35 minutes. We then went for grilled oysters and seafood in one of the seasonal oyster huts that are only open from autumn through spring. You can bring your own drinks so stock up before you set off. The oysters were so fresh and juicy! Easily some of the best I’ve had.
