2024 Hohhot Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Hohhot is a Mongolian word which means "Green City". This city is the provincial capital of Inner Mongolia, also rich with ethnic characteristics. In Hohhot, you can visit Ih Juu Temple or Shiretu Juu to experience the cultural integration of Tibetan Buddhism with the Mongolian people. There is also an Islamic-style street that will show you the charm of another culture. Temür Urkhu on the outskirts of the city is the final resting place of Wang Zhaojun—one of ancient China's Four Great Beauties. There are wonderful song and dance performances by ethnic Mongolians that are not to be missed in Hohhot.

Popular Attractions
Ih Juu Temple
Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon Tourist Area
Xilitu Zhao Temple
Inner Mongolia Museum
Sai Shang Ancient Street
Red Stone Cliff | Hohhot Altay Branch
It takes about 1 hour to drive from Hohhot to Red Stone Cliff.
On the way, you will pass the Chiller River Prairie, where you can take a stroll and experience the racecourse.
Then drive forward to Daqing Mountain.
Don't worry about missing the scenery along the way. There are cars on the side of the road at every photo spot. You can stop and take photos at any time.
At the fork in the road, you can choose to go left to Red Stone Cliff or right to Jiulong Bay and Holy Water Beam.
If you have time, you can also visit Jiulong Bay, but you need to pay a parking fee of 10 yuan and an entrance fee.
Then return to Red Stone Cliff by the original route.
There is only one road in the scenic area, which can be driven directly to the exit. There are no obvious signs pointing to the exit. The further you go, the more you feel like you are in a no-man's land. At that time, there was no signal in the mountains, and I almost turned back.
There are many free-range cows and sheep in the scenic area. You can get off at any time and take photos with them.
The mountain road is winding, so be sure to drive slowly.
After a day of racing with small animals, drive back to the city and have a whole meal at the Xiaomi Restaurant. The mutton hotpot is so fragrant that it flies.

Temples and Pagodas
This was a very quick trip before our train ride to Baotou and imagine, we visited these beautiful temples for 30 minutes and it was a lot if fun with so many people. Though we kind of regret that we don't have so much time to explore the traditional street and see what they are selling there but still we love the experience having seen so much beauty. Take note: the five pagoda temple is for free.

Tips and Tricks ⁉️
💙If you visit city by flying into Hohhot's airport you'll have a direct connection to the city via Metro Line which final station is right by the Airport.
💚Another option of getting to the city center is by bus which stands right outside the airport's arrival gates. One ticket costs ¥15 and it takes around 1 hour to reach city center. Bus departs once the full passanger capacity is reached.
💛DiDi - taxi service to the city costs around ¥50. In case you're short on time or have someone to split the price, this would be the fastest and most convenient way to reach your final destination.

Hohhot Inner Mongolia
The city of Hohhot is not only famous for its food! It’s mountains, and grasslands, and sunsets are all worth seeing. If you are an advisor backpacker like me then a view such as this is not something you will want to miss. Walking through the grasslands at sunset. Camping next to one of their largest natural water resources. Hohhot is not a city where you should stay in the city. I recommend you explore more leave the city. Camp in the natural world.

Hohhot Cultural City
Hohhot, a key city of Inner Mongolia, is located in the central part of Inner Mongolia linking with Yinshan Mountain to the north, Yellow River to the south, Baotou and Ordos to the west, and Ulanqab to the east. It is known as the capital of this northern province.
The city has many traditional old streets that are wonderful to walk around and buy souvenirs.
The parks in the city are breathtaking and peaceful and offer a unique opportunity to enjoy the life of the locals.

I was at this hotel for 8 days. Good food, not far from the airport, near the railway. There is a large shopping center nearby. Hohhot, formerly known as Kweisui, is the capital of Inner Mongolia in the north of the People's Republic of China, serving as the region's administrative, economic and cultural center. Hohhot is a relatively small city by Chinese standards, about the same size as Birmingham (the UK’s second largest city). Hohhot’s size means that it offers a wide range of amenities without feeling overcrowded and makes it possible to travel everywhere by bike or taxi.
Surrounded by grasslands, the air quality is very good. The city itself is located on a plateau about 400km west of Beijing and has its own international airport. Hohhot’s location makes it the ideal place to come if you wish to experience the ‘real’ China, while at the same time being within touching distance of Mongolia.
#skiadventure
We cycled there from Dalad. It is a beautiful grassland however a lot of the attractions inside are not really maintained well. About 2 hours is enough for visiting. It is worth to have a look at the lake in the grassland there as well.
Hohhot 🇨🇳 Inner Mongolia
A city on the rise!!!
Hohhot has the best lamb dishes. The ribs, skewers and coriander dishes were delicious.
The city has a rich history with lots on show for you to visit. The temples, statues and religious buildings are still key hubs in the community.
The best way to explore the city is on the electric scooters that are all around the city with wide bike lanes to suit.
In the Hohhot history museum there are some great exhibits covering thousands of years of Inner Mongolian history and wildlife.
The bars and hotels in Hohhot are developing as the City expands, but there are some great craft beer bars and rooftop spots for an evening above the city.
I've no doubt in the future Hohhot will be a vibrant city with tons to offer. For now it's a fun city to visit for a day before you head to the desert or grasslands. Definitely order some lamb ribs
cat cafe is the best place of you love cat and you can buy cats or enjoy the coffee 😝 delicious cake and environment is beautiful

Hohhot - A city of Culture
Surrounded by fresh air, green grasslands and mountain hikes- Hohhot is the perfect starting point for a Inner Mongolian adventure. Considering the climate and the relative comfort of the city, it’s a good introduction to the rest of the province, giving you things to see without starting off too extreme.
One such great thing to do is to just wander around. Starting in the heart of downtown you can quickly walk through multiple temple complexes, as well as a couple of mosques - that diversity being a notable point of reference that makes for an interesting view.
Then, when you’re ready, grab a bowl of hot noodles and it’s time to get ready for the rest of your adventure.

Wild Wild North - Inner Mongolia
Definitely a trip for the more adventurous traveler.
Inner Mongolia was an experience and a half. camping in the desert, riding horses, seeing ancient inner Mongolian rituals, and eating ALOT of Lamb.
Two cities to definitely check out would be Baotou and Hohhot. Baotou has a grassland park right in the center of the city and a lot of good hotpot restaurants. Hohhot is a little bigger with a large Muslim population. you can find great halal food in the area and see some Islamic inspired architecture. a lot of dried meats
🐎 Inner Mongolia is known for its horses and if you go visit the many grassland areas you might be able to catch a horse show or even ride one yourself
🍲 The food is amazing. abundant in lamb and milk products, it might be alittle hard to find vegetarian options, but they do exists.
🐫 The grasslands are amazing. you get to sleep in a yurt and see the night sky and all the stars without any glare from city light.
👘 Classical Mongolian Dancing is also a must see. Very well choreographed dance moves combined with balancing objects on their heads, the dancers make it look easy. but it probably took a long time to master. 🙂
Getting There - Plane and rented keep to the grasslands
Attractions - Horse show, Grasslands, Traditional Mongolian Dancing
Hotels - Grassland Yurt
Food & Restaurants - Lamb Hotpot, Milk Tea, Lamb BBQ

In Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, there is a Tibetan Buddhist temple called Dazhao Temple. When you first heard of Dazhao Temple, you will feel a little doubt, just because there is also a Jokhang Temple in Lhasa in the far west. "Call" and "Zhao" have the same pronunciation, but the meaning is different. "Call" is the meaning of Tibetan temples, and "Zhao" is the meaning of "Sakyamuni Buddha". Da Zhao Temple, the Han name was originally "Hongci Temple", later changed to "Woliang Temple", and because the temple is dedicated to a silver Buddha, also known as "Silver Buddha Temple." "Small is hidden in the mountains, and it is hidden in the city." Most of the temples I have seen are in the mountains, and the temple is an exception, located in the city centre of Hohhot. The so-called big hidden
"Mongolian Museum" is the most extensive comprehensive collection of cultural relics collection, research and exhibition in the inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The gold crown of the Xiongnu King, which was unearthed in Ordos City, is exquisite and magnificent. It is the only gold crown decorated by the Huns in China. This set of gold crowns is made by casting, beating, embossing, spinning, inlaying, etc., and the eagle of the wings is tightly connected to the hemisphere. The fore ring is made up of three semi-circular gold bars and rivets. The horizontal part of the tiger, the horizontal disc sheep and the lying horse, etc., the middle part is the rope pattern, which shows the profound culture of the Huns. This is also the treasure of the museum of the Inner Mongolia Museum.
